Absolutely outstanding. Also there is the relationship of the three minors (inner circle) to their direct counterpart Majors in the outer circle, when considering chords most readily available in a given key. So looking at C we have F and G closest and instead of traveling clockwise to find D, A and E (which of course are capital letters on the outer ring), we look inside at the relative minors - and voila, we find d minor, a minor and e minor adjacent to the aforementioned three chords F,C and G. This "introspective" method of finding the available 6 chords in any key does however leave out the ever elusive diminished chord in the 7th position. Thank you sir, for this informative and clear look at the single most important "key" to unlocking musical relations of keys and chords. Well done.

Around 7 mins you talk about starting at the 11 o'clock position for sharps and the 5 o'clock position for flats but you don't explain why.
@miromax8114 жыл бұрын
Mark answered in another comment, I can't give you a link, so here it is: ============================================================= So I'm getting asked this question alot. It seems that I wasn't clear enough in the video. I'll try explaining it another way... If you think of a key signature written on a stave, the sharps or flats are always written out in a certain order. Let's take the key of B major, as an example. B is at the 5 o' clock position on the circle. This means there will be 5 sharps in its key signature. What are those 5 sharps? Sharp 1: F# Whenever we write a key signature, the first sharp we write in the key signature is F# (the reason is that F# exists in many different keys) F# is indeed one of the sharps that exists in the key of B major. Sharp 2: C# The next sharp that we write down is C# (C# also exists in many different keys - although not quite as many as F#) C# is one of the sharps in the key of B major. Sharp 3: G# The next sharp we write down is G#. (G# exists in slightly fewer keys than C#). G# is one of the sharps in the key of B major. Sharp 4: D# The next sharp we write down is D#. (D# exists in slightly fewer keys than G#). D# is one of the sharps in the key of B major. Sharp 5: A# The final sharp we write down is A#. (A# exists in slightly fewer keys than D#). A# is one of the sharps in the key of B major. So the order in which we write down the sharps in a key signature is to do with how many different keys they appear in. Now the circle of fifths lays this out for us graphically. Whenever we want to find out the sharps in a key (and the order in which to write them down in a key signature) we ALWAYS go back the 11 o' clock position where we find F as F# is always the first sharp we write in a key signature as it exists in all the keys which have sharps in them. Now as far as the flats are concerned, the same idea holds true, only this time we ALWAYS start with B (at the 5 o' clock position) and work anticlockwise as Bb exists in the most keys. Eb exists in slightly fewer keys; Ab flat exists in fewer keys still and so on. Notice that all the keys between 11 o’ clock and 5 o’ clock on the circle are the “white” notes on the piano to which we add either a flat or a sharp sign when we write them down in a key signature. The basic rules are: 1. The keys on the right hand side of the circle (1 o' clock to 5 o' clock) are those containing sharps in their key signatures To find the sharps in any key signature you start at the 11 o' clock position with F# and work round clockwise 2. The keys on the left hand side of the circle (7 o' clock to 11 o' clock) are those containing flats in their key signatures To find the flats in any key signature you start at the 5 'o clock position with Bb and work round anticlockwise. 3. The key of C (at the 12' o clock position) contains no sharps or flats, so you needn't bother with all the above for C major. 4. The key at the 6 o' clock position can be referred to either as F#, in which case it contains 6 sharps in its key signature (see rule 1). or as Gb, in which case it contains 6 flats in its key signature (see rule 2). I hope that I have managed to make things any clearer. and thanks for your comment
