Obviously his power was awesome, but what always made him terrifying to me was his head movement. Imagine throwing punches at a guy, hitting nothing but air, and then he hits you once and sends you flying. Truly a 1 of 1.

That Tyson, pre prison, would give any heavyweight a problem. The speed, power and angles he had were, like you said , nothing we have ever seen before or after. People don’t give Mike enough credit for his boxing skills. Tyson was an extremely technical fighter and a boxing historian. He lived this sport. I will always say that a prime Mike Tyson was one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in history.

But he was undefeated, beat Larry Holmes twice and was a solid champion. It’s not that Mike beat him but rather the way he did. 91 seconds to blast out a guy that had never lost…you can’t take that away from him. Also knocking out Larry Holmes was something too. Larry never got Ko’ed before or after and he had a pretty solid “second” career.

Meanwhile he lost to Holyfield twice, demolished by Lennox Lewis, and never fought Riddick Bowe. But I'm supposed to put him in the same conversation as the Heavyweight legends of the 70's like Ali and Foreman. Right.

I'm glad you added heights and weights to this video, because it really highlights just how much smaller Tyson was compared to the vast majority of his competition. He was usually outweighed by 10 to 30lbs, and in the rare cases where he was the bigger man, he'd usually only outweigh his opponents by under 5 lbs. It gets even more stark late in his career, as Mike fought at his heaviest (around 235) but fought BEHEMOTHS who regularly hit the 260+ mark.

My personal favorite K.O. of Tyson's is the second Bruno one. I've watched it so many times it's just amazing. Imagine Mike coming out of prison eager to regain his title, ferociously attacking Bruno for 3 rounds, until the Britain had to improvise- stepping in south paw, Tyson ducking underneath and exploding with his signature "left, down the right combination", throwing hooks and uppercuts to Frank's face, ultimately ending his career. Another detail is- what I think is a woman screaming JUST as Mike unleashes the 1-2 combo at 28:33... it just adds up to the slaughter :D (I suggest watching the fight with audio :D). By the way I'm pretty sure he had only 1 loss coming into the fight with Bruno, perhaps he was 43-1 rather then 41-3. Non the less amazing video, thanks for the work :)

Mike Tyson could've, and should've, been the greatest heavyweight of all time. People talk about Cus (rightly) but it was Kevin Rooney who kept Tyson focused and disciplined after Cus. It was King telling Tyson to ditch Rooney ( the last person in boxing that, like Cus, cared about him and wanted to make him great) that destroyed Tysons career. Its one of the greatest tragedies and what ifs in sport history.

He had zero chance of gaining the title of greatest heavyweight of all time. To start, the era Tyson fought in was a downtime in the heavyweight division. From when he knocked out Trevor Berbick until he lost to Buster Douglas, name me one notable heavyweight of that era. Then, when big name heavyweights were around, he either never fought them (Riddick Bowe) or lost to them (Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis). This nonsensical notion of Mike being so dominant, when his resume is so subpar, is truly a wonder of seeing him on video knocking out tomato cans and everyone thinking this is how it went for every one of his fights. Most fighters dominate their early opponents, it's not shocking he knocked out a bunch inside the first few rounds, most top end fighters did the same. Also to pretend Tyson's technique didn't start to degrade almost immediately upon D'Amato's passing is ridiculous, Tyson has even admitted it himself. When Cus died, he had no one to be perfect for, and his footwork and head movement degrade with each fight after. Rooney and the rest of D'Amato's team were smart to keep him constantly fighting to keep him focused, but Ultimately once the success kicked in it was a losing game. Even fights Tyson is winning in the mid stages of his career he is doing through sheer power, not the techniques that he had honed under D'Amato. But to pretend Tyson had any chance dethroning the actual GOAT in Muhammad Ali is a level of retarded I can't even fathom. Ali ducked no one, fought multiple hall of famers (George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Archie Moore, Ken Norton) and either beat them in their only match, or on the few occasions he did lose, would win the rematch and then the rubber match. That's why Ali is the greatest of all time.

@13:00 The smaller man almost always has the advantage in a boxing clinch. If two men are approximately the same weight, the shorter guy always has more muscle mass and a big speed advantage. They don't have as far to extend to generate max power like lanky guys. It's at distance when taller guys have the advantage. You don't need as much speed because things happen slower and even though they don't have as much power, they have reach that lets them land from a distance. Tall kick boxers have a slight advantage in the clinch because they are allowed to cup heads and throw knees.

It is a shame that Tyson peaked in his early twenties, but his phenomenal activity meant that by the time of his first loss he already had an all-time-great resume. Spinks, Holmes, Tucker, Thomas, Smith, Berbick, Bruno plenty of champion-level guys and some notable contenders like Green,Jaco, Stewart, Frazier, Gibralta and such. People downplaying Mikes accomplishments have to say that his era was bad, which is really just a vibes based non-argument.
