Peter The Dutch Lumberjack Aerts is one of the greatest kickboxers of all time. His nickname, the Lumberjack, came from Aerts ability to fell heavyweights, chopping them down with wide, arching kicks. But there was much more to Arts style than mere power.
Aerts used complex footwork similar to the footwork Lomachenko uses today, which was set up and supported by stellar striking fundamentals and intelligent ringcraft.
Aerts entire style was built around landing his insane high kicks, and every component of his system was engineered to move him towards that goal. His style is a great example of how a fighter can use simple, low risk techniques to break down opponents in order to set up more powerful strikes. So in this video, we’ll take a look at the staple strikes that Aerts threw, and how he modified each to create a clear and effective path towards landing his most dangerous strike.

By way of record, he very well could be. As far as I can remember, he's the most successful K-1 fighter. Maybe Hug or Hoost has a cleaner record. But he's fought this year and longevity stands for something.

Peter Aerts reminds me of when we rented fight tapes to watch and didn't read the scores to not spoil who was the victor, but with peter aerts it was not even a surprise.... also his shuffle was stellar! The man could shufle in any direction and range... Usualy its a moment where one is suceptable to take a hit, and many have fallen by being clocked while shuffling, yet the man always went unscaved from it.

Great breakdown, my favorite instructor was always emphasizing footwork and initiating combinations mostly off a speedy jab, the jab being the initial in the face distraction to move around and or land heavier punches or/and kicks. He often mentioned how good Tyson was with his footwork as an example. Constantly working on footwork often allows you to get around and even behind your opponent. I found working with an imaginary 8 angles around me usually in a stance with my back heel off the ground like you would before sprinting so you can use explosive movement, constantly practicing that before each training session and also on my own at home was a game changer.

As a long-time Aerts fan this is easily the best breakdown I've ever seen on the man. Usually the furthest analysts will go is the high kick itself and broad aspects of its execution ('block the vision' and/or 'sometimes he goes low, sometimes he goes high') - you went way beyond that and shed light on an entire 'system' of footwork patterns, angles and the very strategic processes which reveal Aerts' greatness far more than a video restricted to only the kick itself would have. Amazing work, almost criminal that you've given it to us for free.

He kicks with proper form. Wow. Its funny how training according to the way its done builds better technique than training in a manner that whoever is in charge paying membership fees feels comfortable with. Will the wonders ever cease? Wow. I can't believe that these kicks are considered special. They are special....these days....unfortunately...because they are done properly. Full chamber-not an impressively fast quarter chamber. Extension-You can watch the force slide down his leg and his body jerk back on completion, this means that his leg is more transmitting than providing force with the slight jerk back representing force bleeding back into his body after the millisecond brief contact. Leverage-he keeps his body behind his strike.

Ramon Dekker is the greatest non Thai kickboxer ever. Peter, is one of the best heavy weight kick boxers of all time, and he has the most of my respect. When he lost from Badr... if you compare Badr now at the age Peter lost... Badr would not have stand a change taking on a 40 year old lumberjack! That's why Peter shall be in the top 3 of all times.

Seeing this makes me so sad that since K1 disappeared, nothing really took it's place. And it was the best thing ever. Fighters from all diciplines meeting in a tournament style finale. What an event this was to watch every year in December.
