Simple and clear! I'm an Italian PT student. Here in Italy we talk about "Pliometria" (plyometrics) and "Forza esplosiva" (explosive force). The second one differentiates from the first because it doesn't need the "stretch reflex" ("riflesso miotatico" in Italian). Do you have a similar categorisation in the US ? Thanks you in advance for your kind answer. Ciao!

Yes I see that distinction made in the US between plyometric (involving stretch shortening cycle) and explosive strength (also can be called power or explosive power) exercises

@@TheMovementSystem Thank you! Much interesting, although from what I understood an exercise like the box squat is often taken as example for both plyometrics and explosive strenght, and that's a tad confusing. What can you tell me about that?

Very smart cat. The only thing I wish you had covered is how long the stretch response lasts. My kid's Muay Thai instructor had them stretch for 3 or 4 seconds. I told him that didn't account for the stretch response and they weren't really getting anything done. He wasn't really interested in knowing about it. And hey, I could be wrong, but the people who taught me are smart. Do you have an opinion on how long to hold a stretch?
@TheMovementSystem3 жыл бұрын
Typically it takes longer than 10 seconds for the muscle to relax into a stretch. In the 3-5 second time frame you might be activating the Golgi Tendon Organ and causing reflexive activation of the muscle. You'd want to wait for that to dissipate after 8-10 seconds to allow for a deeper stretch.

Do you think when the goal is to build muscle the stretch reflex is a bad thing (Due to elastic energy) and we should not use it?

To improve explosiveness should I train with stretch reflex? Or should I eliminate them on lifts and focus on concentrics like dead stop training?

Hey Man. Idk if you still respond to comments, but I have a question. Could having a greater stretch reflex (pattelar ligament percusion on a healthy individual) be a indicative of a better stretch-shortening cycle or is amount of reflex just different between individuals?
@TheMovementSystem2 жыл бұрын
Actually I’m not sure. I don’t think having a strong or weak patellar percussion reflex is related to speed/SSC function though
