Lucy Punch, who plays Hattie, has played at least 5 different versions of “the ugly stepsister”. Ella surrounded herself with people who were polite and asked instead of demanded. Hattie was used to demanding instead of asking (will you pass me that? I think they were talking more about that she didn't counter demand. She could have protected her better.

In the book, fairy culture is just really against casting 'big magic' because they don't want to cause long-term consequences. Lucinda is unusual in that she uses it pretty freely. She especially likes to gives people terrible gifts she thinks are good, like giving a giant couple the gift of never being able to leave each other's side or giving someone the gift of being a squirrel. Unfortunately, reversing these 'gifts' also requires the fairies to perform 'big magic,' so they refuse to do so.

To be fair to her friend: Ella was compelled to not tell anyone about the curse. So in order to know for sure Areida would have to test it like ellas step sister did. By asking ella to do shit she doesn’t want to do. If you are a good person though..would you do that? I think it would be really hard to make that choice to test it out. Also it’s possible up to this point Ella hasn’t had a tonne of commanding people in her life so her friend might not have seen enough to be anything more than mildly suspicious. Also even if you felt kinda sure about it, there’s probably a smidge of doubt..she’d need the courage to directly confront Ella about it and Ella is compelled to never give her the truth. 🤷♀️ I agree Areida shoulda figured it out BUT it’s not out of the realm of possibility that she didn’t figure it out beyond like “huh my friend really is a push over”

The parts with Areida (Ella's friend) make more sense in the book. And Mandy (the fairy that's really bad at magic) was one of the household's servants so she was limited in her ability to help Ella not only by her lack of magical skill but also by her standing within the society/household. They cut and changed a lot to make the story work better for a movie. Personally I like both of the movie version and the book version a lot but in different ways. The book is one of several the author wrote within the same universe (Areida's sister is the main character of Fairest which is the snow white one) and several other fairytale/fantasy books that I loved as a child. Loved this reaction, the responses are always so fun and insightful.
@ma-ri-ko3 жыл бұрын
The book “ella enchanted” is one of the childhood favorites that survived every one of my decluttering sprees. The movie is good fun, the book is just more my vibe. a little more grounded, a little more nuanced. It’s written from ella’s perspective so we get a lot more understanding of how she experiences the curse. she will resist the order as long as she can physically hold out, but the magic is almost hooked into her nervous system. she gets a pounding headache, a pulling in her joints, and the room starts spinning. Magic in general is understood to be something with unforeseeable ripple effects and therefore isn’t something that anyone except Lucinda uses lightly. No one will undo ella’s curse because it was big magic to cast it in the first place and it would be big magic to break it. With people who know her well, Ella can sometimes ask, like, “do I have to?” while resisting an order and the person will rephrase it as a request. The book takes place over several years during which we see a friendship blossom between Char and Ella, frequently through correspondence so the curse doesn’t mess with the logistics of consent as much during the formation of their bond. *spoiler alert for anyone intending to read the book* the big curse breaking moment is actually when dame Olga and Hattie order Ella to marry the prince. the uncle doesn’t exist in the book. so Ella is terrified not only of potentially being used to assassinate char like in the movie scenario, but of being used as a weapon in political games. She’s terrified of how she could be used to hurt the kingdom. So she resists the order to marry prince char to save herself and literally everyone she knows. The deeper implications are set up in the movie but I feel like the framing is still more focused on her betraying her true love. Cary elwes is fucking devouring the scenery in this movie, tho. Between his role in Robin Hood: men in tights and the princess bride, he has the perfect resume the do this part justice

Thanks for doing this because Anne Hathaway deserves the love and respect because a lot of people for some reason have beef with her. If she were around the same age as Emma Watson, then she would honestly be the better and perfect Belle 💯 the soundtrack for this movie is pretty solid! Thanks for the amazing video, guys! This movie is actually based on the book "Ella Enchanted" by Gail Carson Levine and while the film is great, I just love the book so much! There were several changes in the movie adaptation, so reading the book would actually answer a lot of your questions. It's also kind of a whole other story, so it shouldn't feel like you know everything while reading. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll write some of the changes further down: SPOILERS 1. The relationships of several characters are different in the book. Char and Ella meet and interact a little differently (their relationship is a lot cuter in my opinion), and it's more about treating each other as individuals instead of adhering to social rules, and being allowed to be silly with each other. The story also happens over a longer period of time, so them getting together doesn't feel as abrupt. Areida is actually not her childhood friend but a friend she met at finishing school (midway through the book) and their relationship also makes a lot more sense that way. 2. In the book, it's made clear from the beginning that Mandy is a servant in Ella's household, so she can't say much in front of Ella's stepmother without the risk of being fired and then not being able to help her at all. 3. I don't want to spoil too much, but Ella is really cool in the book. She is pretty smart about keeping her curse hidden, tricks ogres, disguises herself at a ball, actually talks to Lucinda etc. 4. The entire side story about the uncle is a little different? And by "a little" I mean completely. (It's been a while since I've had the chance to read the book though, so if I remembered anything incorrectly, please tell me!) SPOILERS I highly recommend reading the book if you have time and are in the mood for a feel good story! The only critique I've heard so far is that some readers don't like the writing style, so it sometimes becomes a "You either like it or you don't" situation, but you should definitely give it a try.

Several changes? More like the whole thing was changed with a few things like some names and the idea of the curse being the only things kept. I love your list though and agree with the all those points.
@Ανδρεια3 жыл бұрын
@@goma3088 Haha, true. It's definitely different 😅 But I'm pretty charitable towards the movie because my siblings love it and I think it served as a gateway to the book for a lot of people.

Her singing in this movie hilariously enough is what convinced the casting director for Les Mislerables to give her a chance!
@corneliahanimann21732 жыл бұрын
Well this is based on a book that is appearently tons better than the movie. The thing about Lucinda is, that she regularly gives people crappy "gifts" and she is offended when Ella doesn't appreciate it and also insists that Ella has to keep it. Ella approaches Lucinda a second time, but Lucinda has then learned her lesson and fucked up so badly with magic, that she has given up on performing any spells at all, trapping Ella in this unfortunate situation. Lucinda definitely gets ln peoples nerves in the book a lot more. I hear thar the love story between her and the prince is better too, because they know eachother for years and are friends before they actually become a couple.

8:46. Cary Elwes came to our Phoenix comicon a few years back and HE pronounced his own last name like "Yules". He said: "Hi everyone, I'm Cary Yules..." I was so shocked because I'd always said 'El-wes'. To this day... I'm still not sure if that's the right pronunciation of if he was having one over on us.

I really like both this movie and the book that it was based off of. The movie took this story in a very different direction being campier and sillier while the book dove a bit more into the nuances and implications, but I think that because they are so different that I can love them both for different reasons rather than one or the other being better at reaching the same end goal.

I actually got nightmares about being compelled through forces out of my control to harm loved ones because of this film, it’s a real scary concept for a kid, already having so little control as is and being made into a true puppet. I accepted that it was just a movie soon afterwards but it really was a horrifying thought to me back then. I felt Ella’s pain.

I have this movie on DVD, and I can tell you what happened to the snake. In one of the deleted scenes it was revealed that one of Char's fan girls turned the snake into a belt. Oh and you'll notice that Hattie kind of disappeared during the final song. Well in the same deleted scene she asked Lucinda for a gift, to marry a prince. Lucinda brings her the frog prince, this of course makes Hattie mad, she yells a Lucinda, so Lucinda turns Hattie into a frog.

So going into it as someone who read the book when they were a kid: This would have been a Cinderella retelling if it wasn't Ella's Enchanted: In name only. There's an awesome "Lost in Adaptation" KZbin video that breaks down the plot of the book and how the movie and book are similar and different. Both are independently amazing, but for completely different reasons.
