Wendy hit the nail on the head with the connection of the gold threads in the intro and what Vax saw with the Raven Queen. Those are the threads of fate which are of the Raven Queens domain, and her manipulation of those threads without going into spoilers, is what she is using to tie Vax to her. The raven and the gold threads in the intro were always an intentional homage to this and its really cool seeing people now notice this all this time later.

Overall, I am loving all the changes they’re making to the story. It’s still the same tale, but the beats taken to get there are different. Definitely loving Keyleth’s newfound confidence… and she’s notably cursing a lot more. In fact, this episode (best I could tell) is the first time she dropped the F-bomb! And she got Vax to smile again. He even called her “Kiki” again. Aww. And of course, the ONE person that Scanlan allows himself to be sincere towards… ends up dying protecting him. Umbrasyl living up to his title “The Hope Devourer”. And ouch. That ending. An absolute divergence that works well for the narrative.

About Scanlan, sometimes, its a lot easier to be open with strangers, they give unbias opinions, and u dont have to care if they judge u since they are stranges and u will never see them again.

So many clever changes. They're doing a good job of keeping the story beats, but changing up the specifics to keep it fresh for those of us who know the campaign.

Funny thing for me seeing the vision of him standing over his dead friends is that both times they did a battle royale one shot Grog got demolished instantly.

It's also important to note that with like with the Sphinx's song and Vedmire's mansion in Whitestone, the rest of the party never see his best moments. He's a little more of a joke to them because they've never seen him at his most heroic.

In the campaign, it was simply a riddle to figure out Kam's name. In animation, I'm glad they get to play more with the challenge, music, ect. I know there's autotune, processing, and multiple takes to get it right. But I still think Sam (and edit: Alanna Ulbach. Thank you Mia. I didn't look up the voice for Osyssa) killed it on the vocals this episode. Fun fact: A wielder of MythCarver before Scanlan was The White Duke. That's Matt homage and love of David Bowie coming out.

Yeah, Pike got hit by Craven Edge in the campaign too, but it wasn't as big a deal as it is here because 1. It was more definitively an accident (Grog threw the sword with a chain to use as a grapple and it ended up getting lodged in Pike), 2. They weren't trying to escape a dragon so they had time to heal and didn't get separated like this And 3. A few lost hit points are less of a problem than a major loss of blood

The golden lines in the intro represent the threads of fate and the fates of party members intertwining. And the Raven Queen is the goddess of fate so there is a connection. You're picking up what they're putting down.

Oh those are definitely the threads of fate in the intro. They're _really_ good at the whole foreshadowing thing. And in a way that you just don't notice unless you know what to look for.
@AlasdairGR Жыл бұрын
Like others have said, those gold threads are the threads of fate (kind of similar to Norse mythology where the three Norns spin the individual threads of everyone's lives and add it to a grand tapestry). The added significance of the intro this season is that the Matron of Ravens doesn't just have dominion over death, but also over fate itself. This is why the intro starts off with a raven flying over Tal'Dorei before splitting apart into the individual threads. She can see and manipulate all the threads, hence her cutting Vax and Vex's shared thread and attaching it to herself.

I think the challenge was originally figuring out the name of the sphynx by reading the pillars. Buf of course, Umbrasyl never tracked them down because Ripley never approached him, the sphynx never died, the party was never split. I understand them cutting corners to save time - and I do enjoy the rapport between Ripley and the dragon - but I wonder what killing the sphynx will do in the long run.

So while the edit that they completely change the conflict with the Sphinx is correct, Pike absolutely does get impaled by Craven Edge in the campaign during the Sphinx encounter. The context is just very different. The campaign had the battle be more of a puzzle that included getting clues from these portals that seemed to lead to never-ending voids. Grog went into one to get the clue but started to drift away into the void, so he wrapped the chain of returning (a campaign only item it seems) around Craven Edge and chucked it back through the portal. He didn't realize that he had hit Pike until he pulled himself out of the portal and saw that Pike had held the blade in so he could pull himself out.

7:15: “SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL! THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN! SECRET SECRET SECRET SECRET TUNNEL! YEAH!” I really liked the fight between the Sphinx and the acid dragon. It looked so cool. It was also funny to hear Scanlan singing the song to the Sphinx. And the rest of the group’s reaction when the Sphinx told them Scanlan made him feel pain was really funny. It was kind of funny watching this episode because every time I saw Grog holding the sword I was like “Okay, now yeet the sword! Chuck the sword over the cliff!” The ending was really sad with Pike getting stabbed. I figured it would happen based on Grog’s dream in the beginning. But it was still really sad.

yeah they changed a lot here, the whole trial was completely different, Grog accidentally wounded Pike by throwing his sword through a portal to anchor himself to avoid drifting into space, not because of Craven Edge bloodlust, Scanlans Song was new as well as him getting mythcarver here and the whole battle with Umbrasyl and Kalamajiori was new, he didn't die here, also the party didn't get split. Loving the way they did all of it though! That song and animation was amazing!
@corvacks8924 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if the Umbrasyl taking Mythcarver was in reference to Sam barely using it while he had it?
@ginster458 Жыл бұрын
@@corvacks8924 I feel like it's less reference and more consequence of it. Mythcarver was great for Scanlan, but mostly due to passive buffs, and you can't really depict that in the show, just like the Deathwalkers Ward now functions like the Boots of Haste did instead of giving resistances. So I think narratively this makes a lot of sense, especially if you have to condense a lot of stuff. And I think having Umbrasyl interested in the vestiges and Ripley setting him on VM's trail works great to up the stakes, because they WOULD be great treasure and Westruun has already been razed. It serves as a narrative setback too, and even more incentive to go for Umbrasyl first ( additionally to Grog's arc) because they NEED it to find more now.

This comment will be in mild spoiler territory regarding the golden thread: The Matron of Ravens remarks that Vax and potentially the other members of (Vox Machina) that he is a champion of fate, and that his fate isn't determined, but he can indeed change the path of fate. This is why he is a good choice as a champion, he is a very special type of person.

The reason they kill off some NPCs or make it seems like they died in the show is so the viewers can't make the comment of "Why didn't they just ask X for help?". That way it makes sense that they're not around.

Rewatching your review and I just realized… Spoilers… Grog waking up exhausted was actually how he died because of Craven Edge in the campaign. Travis didnt rest because the sword’s advantages would reset after a long rest. His strength was at max 25 but he was also had 2 or 3 exhaustion points. So when he had to do a con save, the sword zapped him out of energy. And this was after he wounded Pike with it. 😊
