I bought my first flip phone over two decades ago. The Michael Fisher of 2001 was a high school graduate about to move to college 500 miles away, still finding his place in a world where not having a phone permanently in your pocket was suddenly the exception, rather than the rule.
The inevitable nostalgia that springs therefrom helps explain why I’m so entranced by the new generation of flip phones, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Motorola RAZR 5G -- and also, perhaps, why I’m so forgiving of the flaws that necessarily come with their bleeding-edge folding screens.
But for this episode of Into The Fold, I’m not here to re-recite all the reasons I love clamshell foldables. Instead, I want to talk about four things the modern flip phone needs to do better before it can return as a true mainstream option. And you might be surprised at how many of these ideas to reform the future … come from the past.

The moment we can get a mid range foldable is the moment they take off. Flagships are awesome because they push technology but it's a tough purchase to be truly happy about when you're always questioning how far that extra 300-400 bucks went. Chop that price down to 350-500 and watch how quickly people become a lot less picky.

I was looking at upgrading from a 6-year-old phone to an iPhone 13 mini this year but after fees and taxes, it would be $790 unlocked, and that's not even the flagship version. An unlocked official refurb 12 mini, however, would run about $450-475. I have a feeling the same thing is going to happen to foldables *before* "mid range" units start to show up. The iPhone 12 is in no way a "mid range" phone, but just waiting a year after it's launch has seen it already drop to nearly half off, and I for one am looking forward to that trend with foldables (which is, admittedly, already happening with the Razer).

Honestly. That alone may be why I end up buying the Razr 5G, its 500 at T-mobile, 200 if adding a line. At that point, I would be willing to adopt it, possibly even as a secondary handset just for work. There is potential, but the devices are definitely not appealing enough for the 1000 price tag.

100% To be honest, I go from wanting just a simple phone to make phone calls and be reached out in case of emergency to wanting I don't know a z fold 3 or flip 3..,crazy huh? But say the flip, I would love it, but for the price it should have better specs so it's a no for me, same for the fold, and the thing is, every single flagship should be better in some aspect for the prices they carry. BTW, I used to have that lovely Motorola flip back in the day (the classic silver one), the last regular phone I had before blackberry showed up. Anyway, many times I wish to have that flip back. Check emails at work only and live a simpler life, but then again my work demands otherwise :/

@@chicosalerno1706 MKBHD has become lazy. He misses a lot of features on lots of products. Some of his criticisms about missing features are not even missing, he just didn't spend enough time getting to know the product. He's all about churning out videos, high production values and making megabucks, but he's not as thorough and detail oriented as Mr Mobile, Juan Bagnell, and some others. I've started to realise that MKBHD is not really a tech guy, he's just a normal guy reviewing tech. There's a difference.

One thing that might be cool in my opinion would be a big e-ink outer display. E-ink displays consume next to no energy and they are easier to read as you shine light on them, perfect for the summer days! There would be concessions, but I'd like to see this idea in practice.

SamSprung Launcher let's you run any app from the cover screen including making calls, replying to messages and watching videos. It just uses up one of the widgets slots

I think we're on the way for mainstream of flip phones, today I saw a guy (hotel guest) rocking a Z Flip 3 and I figured he was a phone geek as me but he had no idea what he had, he even asked me are there other foldables after which he asked me is his one good (I said that since he's a businessman he could use a Z Fold 3 with an S pen which he noted), funny thing is he doesn't fold it, he took it out of the pocked unfolded 😅 he said he's worried about breaking it so he doesn't fold it which is kinda the whole point of every foldable but especially flip phones but I think if more and more people like him buy them we're on the mainstream way

Definitely customisation. Remember the stalls with what appeared to be 10 trillion different swapable case variants? Not to mention a phone that i had, had a clear removable fascia that allowed you to put a photo or drawing or some such in it. Everyone likes to consider themselves unique and having the ability to express yourself (especially in the social media age) is a selling point. Also wondering if they could develope a hybrid screen that is solid glass on the stationary parts and only flex at the hinge.

I'm fine with my F3, I just have a wireless charger at home and in the office, where I spend most time - that means even if I go out, I can be always sure my flip will be fine on battery, because I live both my home and office at 85% battery.

Especially on a foldable, a lanyard attachment point would do wonders. Embracing honest durable (preferably recycled) plastic bodies instead of delicate glass could help a lot too.

Yah but that's what samsung has implemented on their case for the phone. It's like a silcone/ strap combo with metal clasp for a lanyard to hook on to. This case is super successful in Korea already and most of Asia & some in Japan too! So I'd check it out mate, there's Instagram profiles who sell custom lanyard for the Flip 3 😌

Speaking of Japanese flip phones, one model (Mode1 Retro) even has a touch screen as well as flip keyboard. And samsung has a series of flip phones in china that have touch and dual displays, e.g. w2019. They're really cool!

It was a lawless wasteland of design standard and as such had me buying a new phone every few months to try out the next innovative thing. A far cry from the endless barrage of uninspired rectangles we get to choose from today.

Love the content Michael. (The production quality is insane.) As a fellow flip enthusiast, I think you’re spot on with most of your points as well. You mentioned the extra step being an inconvenience but I actually see it as a benefit that’s often overlooked. Far too many are glued to their phones doing non-productive things. Hey, I’ve been there so I’m not judging. That extra step could actually help prevent people from getting sucked in though. I know it’s helped me. On a lighter note, if a manufacturer wants to embrace fun and nostalgia (and why wouldn’t they?) then they should create a modified OS to bring back the look and feel of the past. Whether you want to relive the glory years of T9 texting on big numbered buttons dominating the bottom half or have a full screen, modern smartphone experience. Bonus points if they lower the resolution on the top and bring back the old school GUI.

Experiment with 4:3 or 16:9 or 5:3 aspect ratio screens. Foldable's true potential can be utilised through those aspect ratio in such compact size. If black berry were alive today, some master piece would've come out of this tech.

below $500 would be the 'cheap' tier - foldables are well too far away. Native android API support for 2nd screen widgets also - makes devs lives easier for developing widgets to support that feature rather than manually having to support each OEM OS individually. Also - reparability which was briefly mentioned, but needs to be highly emphasised

Had my RAZR 5G for a little while now and it's easily my favorite phone. I think the one thing I'd like to see is customizable side buttons. Part of why I love the RAZR 5G and don't care for the Flip is the external display. It's perfect for playing media on the go. It also means my phone doubles as a nice Gameboy micro when I'm waiting in the car or on line and don't want a full sized phone out. In both of those scenarios it would be useful to have better side buttons for extra utility.

Programmable swipe/motion guestures which work on the outer screen would be cool. Torch or camera accessable with a quick shake; two finger swipe up to access messages etc. Basically it would cut time off your tasks by reducing the amount of swipng through lists of widgets to get what you want.

The Voice Recorder is great on the Watch 4 (and previous Samsung watches) I can make a voice note on the watch while I am walking or running without my phone and it syncs over, no problem. I suggest disabling the speech to text on the watch so you can just make a note without internet.

Definitely agree with the improvements you mentioned. One of the biggest things that keeps me away from the foldable is the fragile screen. I had the first Z Flip for about a month and it was sooo cool! Except for the fact that I was paranoid everytime I used it about not denting the screen with my nails or being too rough with it. That made it go from being an awesome fun phone to a phone that I'd rather not risk taking out with me. Also, a button to open would be so nice. And yes! More colors and textures please!!

Needless to say excellent content, best writing in tech. Push to flip and cover convenience could help drive mainstream adoption. Samsung already has the design nailed, it's inherently fun because of that. Unfortunately I think the battery life is the deal breaker for most. As much as I'd like to argue that, the fact remains it's a second carry for many.

They need better battery life. The Z Flip could do with being 1 to 2mm thicker unfolded if it gets a 4000mAh battery or higher and a better camera (S21 quality, not the Ultra though as it would be really hard to fit that). The current battery life of the Z Flip 3 right now is basically mediocre, a friend lent me theirs and it barely lasted around 5 hours of SoT.

Razr 5G lasts longer cause it does not have a top of the tier processor, which in day to day use no one would notice the difference between a snapdragon 700 and 800 series

@@brooklynforge4591 Well, the Z Flip also has a bigger and higher resolution display that's more power hungry, the adaptive refresh rate might offset that power drain. But still, these new flip phones definitely need bigger batteries when you have screens that are bigger than 6 inches diagonally. A 4000mAh battery should be the minimum when you have displays that are of that size.

I think more than bigger battery samsung needs to optimize their UI to have better battery life. Which I mean even for now I average 5 hours SOT but better optimization would be better than bigger battery. There's a reason Apple is getting better battery life than the S21 Ultra with just the iPhone 13. Almost the Mini has better life than the S21 it's sad, but we can get there if they optimize the UI & Google with the OS.. 🙏🏼🔋

Fun fact - had a 2.5 hour drive to BWI Airport yesterday and the entire drive down was nothing but Michael's reviews and retrospectives. KZbin threw a few Pocket Now vids into the mix and it struck me. I broke 2 Surface Duo's outside glass. The first one broke after about 8 months of having it. Then I seen that they were on fire sale for 400 / 450 on Amazon and said, meh, I'll get another. Broke it within 2 weeks! Ridiculous how dainty these things are nowadays..... I went back to my One Plus 8 Pro. I was thinking about getting the Duo 2, but after the reviews..... I'll wait for another fire sale.

Microsoft shot themselves in the foot, learned _nothing_ , and pulled the trigger again, trying _so hard_ and sacrificing so much to get that illustrious claim to a feature that nobody asked for "tHe wOrLdS tHinNeSt 5g pHoNe". If they had just made each panel the thickness of a surface go, with the same brushed metal outer shell, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat. The battery life would be off the charts.

THIS!! Everything you said!! I grew up having nextels for years, loved being able to "walkie" my friends and I was SO pumped when I got that blue one with the push button flip. And yes, of course I had the hip clip. I can't fit a phone in my pocket nowadays, no way I could fit that brick in my pocket ha. I want an updated flip phone so badly. If someone came out with an updated version of the LG Lotus, (clamshell, full keyboard, but also a touch screen w/o the need for bending) I would be sold in a heartbeat!!

I think something about flip phones that was lost during the move to smartphones was the fact that when you closed it, the phone would stop, hang up any calls and go to sleep. I know for older generations pushing the lock button every time is not something they are used to, Ive seen them put their phones away in their pockets still unlocked.

I hadn't even thought of customization but I agree - more options like what the original Moto X had with leather and wood panels on flip phones would be really cool. I had a wood backed Moto X when it came out and I loved how that thing felt in the hand.

That sideways camera mount idea is brilliant. Its the type of thing people wont even appreciate unless they actually owned one of these things. Its so comfortable to hold my z flip by the bottom half, and have the top half point upwards and shoot video on a swiveling hinge. It feels so right...then I realize im shooting in portrait and my joy evaporates

The flip phone will always be my favorite form factor. When I was in high-school, all I wanted was a flip phone. Then I used a Samsung and the most beautiful flip phone, Moto Razr V3i, in college. Flip phones will always be chic.

Brilliant video. I loved the old flip phones. I had the Sony Ericsson Walkman. For me the perfect flip phone would be a phone with Fairphone’s repairability and the following. 1) Moto Razor’s outer screen. 2) Push to flip 3) have two separate screens like the surface duo or have a touchscreen at the top and a Blackberry style Qwerty Keyboard at the bottom. 4) 5 years OS support. 6) The camera from the Pixel 5a. 7) A price around the £450-£550 mark. 8) Pure stock Android

I liked some of the old high end flip phones made by lg and Samsung , from memory they just where not available in Australia( although I never owned one ), and there wasn’t a bending screen in sight back then . There is something to be said for old stuff , old stuff they constantly innovated to try and give you more features and accessories , these days they actually do everything they can to give you less. They could afford to to make these flips bigger imo , an inch taller and half inch wider would also give more room for bigger outer screens.

It’s the durability factor that’s keeping me away from foldables, that and the crease that seems to form in all of them sooner or later. I’m not overly hard on my personal devices, but I do work in a very dusty environment, dropped my phone numerous times, and have occasionally exposed it to moisture (yes, one of those drops was into a toilet). So making a phone more fragile, despite the “technological” improvements, will always be a step back for me.

I have a razr 5g. It has been working great for about 3 months so far. I really like that I can do pretty much everything I need on the cover display. If I really had to change something of flip phones, it would be to increase their battery life; seriously, my razr gets about a day of battery life, 1.5 days if I'm generous.

Awesome video as always. Most of my Panasonic's and the 2014+ NTTD Sharp flippers have the push-to-open and I still find it a tad cumbersome for me personally. I think with the touch and pressure sensitive sensors these days, it should be possible to firmly "squeeze" the sides of the phone (like in a handshake) and the phone recognising this to release the flip. For me it's still a huge plus to have a phone that's basically half the size of the conventional smartphone, yet still be that conventional smartphone.

Thank you for pointing out push to flip. I had the same thought when I first played with a modern flip phone. They are not smooth or easy to open with one hand. And trying to flip open like we did back in the day, you risk damaging the inside screen.

When I was in high school, I had a Motorola w376g (the "knockoff Razr" marketed to Tracfone). What I loved about it was the vertical display on the front of the phone that would display a green phone icon for calls, an orange battery for charging, and a blue envelope for text messages. I thought that was the coolest thing for a phone to have. I don't really see the point of putting a large OLED display on a flip smartphone. Rather, I would want a "strip" OLED or even LCD display that shows notification icons from top to bottom, as if mirroring the phone's status bar. The other thing is, I would still be okay with the "dual display" setup similar to the ZTE Axon M, just vertically oriented. Honestly, the LG Wing looked like an amazing phone with its dual display implementation; it was just a bit too over the top for me to want to use as a daily driver.

As a past phone salesman you can really tell Michael sold phones as well with his recommendations. Especially the push to flip. At a kiosk that would be a show stopper that you really could talk up as something that is efficient as it is cool.

I have the fold 3. I've been wanting to downsize my phone but still somehow not lose out on screen size and having a premium phone. Obviously I didn't manage to downsize with the fold 3 but it has proven an important feature that I think all flips/folds need. That being the fully usable outside screen. If the flip 3 had a full display on the outside that was fully usable I would've gone with that. I rarely fold open my fold except for a few specific things (video/photo viewing being most common) and the smaller front screen has been a huge help for reducing my phone time (it's juuuuuust small enough to not be addicting). The razor shows it's possible on a half sized display and it's kinda the perfect size for most people's uses (music players, Instagram, etc). We also need to get top grade cameras in there. No excuses on that one.

I would also say the fun factor. Older flip phones had a lot of fun designs and features, like the LG Dlite.
