Longtime subscribers, I apologize: much of what I’m about to say is stuff you’ve heard before. But when I contemplated canceling this video, many of you told me on Twitter that you’d like to see it anyway. And when I considered that I’m one of very few people who’s been consistently using the Motorola RAZR 5G for the past year and a half, I decided it was better to share that experience … even if I’ve already talked about it an awful lot in other videos.
Whether you're nostalgic for the noughties, contemplating dipping your toe into the affordable side of the folding-phone pool, or just morbidly curious about the foldable that everyone seems to have forgotten - join me for Episode 13 of "Into The Fold" - a 2022 re-review of the Motorola RAZR 5G from 2020!

I'm curious as to why you'd rely on him to make a decision? Don't get me wrong I enjoy the content or I wouldn't be here but he approaches each phone from the angle of a content creator rather than a member of the general public. That the reviews often overly focus on the cameras is proof of this, for most people good enough is good enough as they aren't expecting professional photography from something they carry in their pocket.
@FalconWindblader
@FalconWindblader 2 жыл бұрын
@@voteDC Cuz the camera is usually why a particular phone gets so expensive in the first place, & most phones he reviews ain't mid-rangers where cameras are just nice-to-haves. most people who buy phones that cost even over $600 would find lackluster cameras to be absolute deal-breakers, let alone top-end flagships that easily cost around $1000. someone whose focus is on general utility in a phone & little else would go for either mid-rangers or low-enders, & Michael, from what i can tell from most part, doesn't do those phones.

I fairly recently bought a near new Wing as the pricing really dropped off on them, I wish they made it a flagship to really take advantage of the form factor, but I'm glad to have it in my admittedly small collection. What's the hinge like on yours? Mine sounds like it slightly scrapes together when opening and closing, yet with a very healthy spring. I'm just curious if that's just how they are as mine has no signs of usage elsewhere

The 2019-2020 razr was definitely a showcase phone to bring everyone's attention the the brand. That explains why Motorola is reluctant to fix the problems or warranty issues. I've seen things like this in a automotive business many times before. Just look at Audi R8 or Lexus LFA. They were all made to show everyone how strong the company is
@o_sagui6583
@o_sagui6583 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the Audi R8 is still sold to this very day and along with the huracan is a standard which all supercars should follow The LFA is just a story of sadness, he is like an old, polished to sheen and attuned to perfection violin that everyone is afraid to touch
@pleepler
@pleepler 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no, not really. The R8 was a Lamborghini Gallardo in a more civilised frock. Lexus LFA was a very expensive car that didn't have the performance to justify its price, but still sold out easily due to its outlandish nature. What you're thinking of is the Bugatti Veyron and by a bit of a strech the VW Phaeton. Both are Ferdinand Piech's children. The Veyron was a showcase that yes, you can build a 1000hp hyper GT and make it the fastest car in the world. And there was so many doubters. Like, a tonne. They still did it. They blew the world away. And the VW Phaeton? That was Piech's attempt to make the best damn luxury sedan in the world. To stuff it to those Mercedes guys and make BMW and Rolls Royce look like jackasses. It was also an engineering marvel, but it wearing a VW badge and having a very conservative styling was what led to its demise. Phaeton looking like the Passat in its second generation and poor sales killed the car entirely. But the platform lived on in the Audi A8 and Bentley Continental Flying Spur
@rohesilmnelohe
@rohesilmnelohe 2 жыл бұрын
@@pleepler well. the LFA was faster around many tracks than the later and much more powerful Ferrari F12. And it wasn't built for speed as much and it was an exercise in driving feel and driver feedback. Just because on paper it was "just as fast" as a 599 was seriously bad journalism. Besides. It was and still is...extremely rare. And a lot of owners are not afraid to use and show something, that is actually reliable. I'd much rather daily a million dollar (current prices) Lexus, than a 300k ferrari. opinions differ though.

I've wanted one of these phones since they were first announced, however the cost kept me at bay. That is until I found a well-priced "Grade B 5G" model on eBay at the beginning of March this year. Whilst I was apprehensive about the using my own cash on something that is still a cause for some debate, and especially with my work colleagues who have Xiaomi Mi11's, One Plus Nord's etc branding it as "inadequate" and "last year’s tech", I bit the bullet and clicked the Buy Now button. Well, it arrived, and a smile instantly grew on my face! That nostalgic feeling of flipping a phone open with one hand instantly reminded me of my younger days with the V3. So, what’s it like to use? In my opinion, it’s great! It’s everything I want a phone to do whilst maintaining the feel of a phone I want to use, rather than “just another slab” in my pocket. Yes, the battery life isn’t great, but it will usually see me through a day of moderate use. Yes, the screen isn’t that bright, but it’s bright enough. Yes, it isn’t the fastest phone in the west, but it’s fast enough for me. Yes, the main screen feels delicate, but it just means I more careful with it. Yes, the cameras aren’t great, and this is sadly where I can’t really defend it. I take far less pictures with the phone than I have with any other I have owned simply because it’s just not that good. But still, that feeling of opening the phone with a “flip” and closing again with a “thunk” just out ways any of the negatives, at least for me anyway! Plus, my eldest daughter who hates anything but an iPhone really hates it, which makes me love it even more! Will I keep it long term? As long as it continues to perform like it does now and receives updates then yes. The only way I can see me going back to a slab phone is if I break it somehow, from Michael’s experience, let’s hope that doesn’t happen! TL:DR, I love mine, but can see why people are hesitant about it.

The Razr 5G is my favorite phone. I've never been too interested in phone cameras so that particular issue doesn't bother me. My phone serves 3 primary purposes, texting my wife, managing emails, and playing media while I work. The outer display is the real winner for me, I can play whatever video/music I want on it while enjoying the smaller form factor. I am hopeful that the delay in a follow up is to allow for substantial improvements between releases.

I love this phone. For the nostalgia factor, for the boldness of making exciting choices, and also for being head and shoulders above its Samsung counterpart in utility. My only gripe is that I was never really a fan of flip phones, even back in their hay day. I've always been more of a slider enthusiast, and I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for that. A 5-inch phone that sleekly slides out into a mini tablet. No hinge, no uber thickness (unless they bless us with extra battery), and no added wear from slamming it shut. Though the tech still seems a bit far off, and I'm not sure if these screens can handle folding underneath each other.

I've had a Razr 5G for ~15 months, I really wanted to love it but it's the quickest I've ever gone off a phone. I stopped using it around the 6 month mark, I've treated it no worse than any other phone I've had and yet the exterior glass is scratched to high heaven, the internal display has a splodge of dead/stuck pixels. It would randomly drop all network connectivity and would need to be restarted to recover, countless phone calls with my carrier never managed to solve this. The screen is too dim, the battery is terrible. Honestly the phone I wanted to love the most and ended up despising the fastest.

Michael cementing what I've thought for a long time. The mid and even lower end chips are absolutely sufficient for daily use. Much less cost (well, maybe not in this case but in mid-level phones), less battery drain and only negligibly slower performance. The high end chips are overkill in most flagships and are just clickbait to charge more for the phone.

I was super excited to get mine. I pre-ordered it when it first came out as a Christmas gift to myself. I have to say I enjoyed using it with it closed more than anything just like basic interactions I like the fact that it could fit in my actual pocket just like back in the day. Unfortunately, whoever signed off on this phone decided that it needed a coat of Vaseline. I could never get it to even stay in my pocket even sitting on the couch it would fall around my car, and eventually has come to a broken external and internal screen. Out of all the phones I've ever used, I've only dropped one that cracked the phone screen because I slipped on ice, so this is not a common occurrence. But this phone has proven to be impossible to hold in your pocket or hand. It's sitting on my shelf currently because it's ridiculously expensive to fix. In terms of flipping with that natural thumb motion, I modified the case to put a small diy notch for ur thumb to catch to help with that, and it was perfect. I enjoyed everything about it. I got a good battery life because I mostly just used it closed for music, Netflix, etc.. but the phone did not need to be manufactured soaked in baby oil. it reminded my of the Nextel i830 and i860 with its closed lid functionality which was one of the major selling points for me, besides being able to fit in my pocket. but I came from a blackberry key 2 so I enjoy phones that spark conversation through nostalgia. But would never recommend this fucking phone because if it's shitty support with the company and a slippery it is

Thanks for deciding to post this Michael. Massively more information than originally and the chipset thing is becoming more and more apparent. Note10+ user that can say 3 years later it runs like it did out the box. The Razr is always going to be up against it but look at that screen, compare it to the flip and it even has advantages. At the lower price... People might just be tempted to dip their toe. The same as they were at 999 for a modern, "flagship" Samsung z flip.

Thanks so much for this continued coverage. The second generation Razr did a lot to quell my biggest low lying concerns. I really hope to see an effort from Motorola on a v3 to go after the bigger hurdles. Their design language is just so on the nose, especially that external display and sleek curves. It's hard not to be hopeful for a next iteration to pull the trigger!

As I posted on another video regarding the Flip 3: I got the Razr in April of last year. I really liked it based on the same positives you mention here. But yes, after multiple screen issues and Motorola being largely unresponsive in the customer service field, I switched to a Flip 3 earlier this year. It's not nearly as sexy and I miss the external screen, but it does feel sturdier and wireless charging is a huge benefit for me as I go about my day.

Great review. Love my RAZR 2020. I just got mine last year though. Suffice to say, I did wish that it were maybe a bit wider and hoped they kept the same form factor of the original RAZR for the 2022 version but apparently they did away with that now just another looking regular phone when opened...cue your video "When phone were fun." That outer display yes amazing. The camera...is sure okay....I had and love loved loved my LG G8 and still carry it for photos and music. And also LG's photo - camera gallery app is amazing and lacking on Motorola. Now if LG and Motorola got together and also loved the hand gestures on the LG G8, imagine if Moto and LG connected on those features and audio with the QUAD band...that would be delicious! Alwyas love your reviews! Pure excellence.

Enjoying my Razr 5G about 3 months now... conveniently folds and fits most pockets so doesn't demand constant attention like the candy bar size phones. With a cheap $15 cover case I have few concerns about damaging it. All your points are spot on, runs great, am conscientious about having charging cables at my usual spots, aware of sunlit situations, etc. My objective was to diminish my phone's imposition into my life and the Razr has served that purpose well while remaining convenient when needed!

Only $499.00 through T-Mobile way cheaper than quoted on the video. Super excited and will give my thoughts

Glad your RAZR phones held up. I bought my RAZR 5g 2020 from Motorola directly and received it 3/25/22. My screen split in a straight line from hinge to hinge yesterday, but still worked. Today the OLED display started bleeding black from the center out and within 5 folds, it was done! Motorola claimed my 7-1/2 month old phone was caused by physical damage when I called them today (even though it's not) and priced me over $900 to replace the screen. You can buy this phone for $699 right now.

I loved this phone so much. I still have it as a backup, but the dropping of signal with carrier TMobile was just too much to bear, especially considering when I switched to the iPhone 13 mini I actually found I had double the amount of service in areas I never even got it with the razr. I love it and always will have a place for it in my heart (and in the ever so fancy case it arrived in) but i will continue enjoying the iPhone 13 mini in the addicting green color and keep it as a folding phone that once was my daily driver

I've carried my Razr for the past year. I did have a screen break - like you Michael - but a small deductible and a next day mailed phone later and I was back in the game. By the way. Getting the plastic screen protectors - inside and out - and a good case have saved me from any further disasters. I LOVE my Razr. Even now people are FREAKED OUT when they see this phone. I have not grown to miss wireless charging and the battery is fine for my daily needs. I am very pleased with my tiny phone. I am not a huge camera person or gamer so the camera and processor don't matter as much to me. Both do a great job for me. My screen and hinge work just as good at the day I got the phone. Great job Motorola!!

Through a strange series of events i wont get into, i got a Pixel 6 and a Razr 5g at the same time. I went back and forth on them for a few weeks, but i ended up finding that i liked using the Razr more and it has become my daily driver. It feels nicer, the battery lasts me all day, Its unique, and Motorolas android skin is minimal and perfectly integrated. I dont know why the Galaxy Flip gets so much attention over this phone, Its fantastic. Thanks for the long term review. Glad so see someone that gives all phones a fair shake.

Thanks for the 18 month update. I've had both the 2019 and the 2020 versions. Before finding and purchasing a good 2019 refurb I did a lot of research watching many reviews including Mr Mobile because I REALLY like the novelty and pocket-ability of these phones. But these phones are simply not for everybody whether a Samsung Flip or Motorola Flip. My 2019 worked great, that is until updating to Android 11 and the ear speaker would not work no matter what Motorola recommended for settings. Being an unlocked phone I flashed it back to Android 10, ear speaker again worked, updated to 11 again automatically in a week, speaker again did not work. So I got a 2020, again refurb wanting to expoit 5G only to find that even though several main carriers have sold many thousands of these phones including my carrier based upon 5G compatibility, only one carrier in the USA - not mine - at least gets 5G to work on the 2020 flip. My next issue was that Motorola has not yet released a software build to allow both the SIM and the eSIM to be loaded necessitating two IMEI's (IMEI1 and IMEI2). My best upgrade was a clamshell three piece case from Naked Cellphone that included a holster - LOVE IT! So far with at least 5 OOPS drops onto concrete or rocks, nary a scratch or crack or break, and it adds what, 3-4mm to the overall thickness. The case gives that added confidence where the all glass backs of the 2020 just was too slippery for me and made me paranoid. Both of my versions have batteries that last on average with my usage about 3 days. Repairs?!? Lets

... continued ... let's just say to pay more for a replacement OLED then you can buy a new phone for is ludacris! Motorola and many carriers have dropped support for these phones meaning do not expect any updates to be coming for+19 month old technology. I was lucky to get security updates for my Z2 Turbo Force after it was only 6 months old. Next version? It didn't get a mention around CES2022, so my guess is, maybe in time for the end of the year holidays.

I had Razr 5G for about 5 months as part of my crazy plan to use every single foldables on the market since the OG Galaxy Fold from 2019 lol. After a dozen folding phones, I have to admit if I had to pick one and use as my sidekick (my main phone is and always will be iPhone atm) I’ll choose the Razr. I might don’t have a strong sensation of nostalgia as a lot of Razr users do but there’re some weird charms from it. I’m seriously thinking about buying one again.

I remember my first razor. It was the black one that had the m on the front that light up. It was also very durable. At the time I was working for a company that specialized in building docks. So mine got dropped into water multiple times. I just kept a bag of dry rice in my lunchbox and would throw it in the rice usually overnight and it would be fine. Now the phone that I miss the most was the LG flex. I loved that phone.

It’s pretty neat to see that Motorola is still making an attempt to pay homage to their past and keep these things around! I’m a happy 13 owner, but man oh man, that retro skin you can apply to the new Razr is giving me some serious 2006 nostalgia! Crappy camera and midrange internals aside, I’d gladly use one of these alongside my iPhone 😃❤️

This phone has a ton of nostalgia for me just cause my dad had an original razr, he loved that thing lol Just a heads up, you guys can find used Razr 2s on swappa for around $300, and used flip 3s for around $600; if you aren't super sure about committing to a folding future, shopping secondhand can save you a pretty big chunk of money. You can also find Z Fold2's in pretty good condition for around $700!

I've had the Moto Razr 5G just shy of a year now. T-Mobile made me an offer I couldn't refuse --- an insane $199.00 sale with a new line --- and I bit hard. I have not been disappointed. I'm not about bling, nor am I a first adopter. As much respect as I had for the Moto legacy and firsts, I never cared about the original Razr back in the oughts. It was too much for too little. Nor was I bent on a foldable last year. But the price and timing came together, and that was that. The Razr 5G has been, overall, rock solid. No problems with the screen whatsoever. It still looks beautiful. I do get the very rare system or app freeze, but that's no different from any other phone, flagships included, that I've ever owned from Samsung, LG, Google, or other Motorolas. My photos have been perfectly serviceable, if not outstanding. I've been pleasantly surprised by night mode, though, and video recording is exceptional, especially with the oft overlooked audio production one gets with 4 microphones onboard, something I never hear anyone mention. I do wish the camera AF was a little more decisive. I've found the phone to be very durable, thanks in part to the Tech21 EvoClear case that I bought for it. I don't have the cash, or cache, to carry it around bare like Mr. Mobile does, but this case is the next best thing. What I really like about the Razr 5G is that its form is as functional as it is snazzy. You might not like the chin, for instance, until it slips out of your hands, open, onto a hard surface. That's when, unlike the Samsung Flip, the screen gets a measure of protection from the chin so that the screen doesn't land flat, which is good, because, like the Flip 3, there is no legit screen protector for the Razr 5G. Finally, I really like the size. Honestly, except for typing, I'm a strictly one-hand operator. All you middle school boys in the crowd, stop snorting and quiet down. I like that my hand can, in a pinch, hold the phone while my thumb reaches to the top of the screen. Sadly, although I don't expect to trade it in, I'm probably going to switch my sim card into an ASUS Zenphone 9 very soon. As much as I hate to leave Motorola, I'm more and more concerned about security issues with Chinese brands, and, American as it sounds, there's no way to get around that Motorola Mobility is is a Chinese company these days. Otherwise, why would the Moto Razr 3 would be debuting in China and Weibo instead of Facebook from Chicago? And if the CCP gets its claws into everything Chinese, why should I trust Motorola Mobility any more than Huawei or TikTok? Furthermore, my understanding is that the new model design is bigger and removes the defining chin and is apeing the Samsung Flip 3 in so many ways, ruining much of the distinctive and functional charm of the Razr 5G. What a shame! I don't want a thick-as-a brick foldable. If I did, I'd go get a Samsung. That said, I'm going to miss my Razr 5G as my daily driver. Best $200 phone I've ever owned, without a doubt.

I've had mine for quite some time now, personally I agree that for a large number of people it's a niche phone. However, that being said, I also believe that when prices drop to let's say anywhere between $500-600 more will want these. I know for me, it had to do with the form factor. I wanted something that was pocketable but could also be a normal size phone when I need it, and...being I too am a huge Trek fan, a communicator. I freely admit however, my biggest complaint about the phone is the battery. That all being said, I really am looking forward to the next iteration of RAZR. Also, Michael thanks for the review of this phone it ultimately made me decide to get it!

Had mine for just shy of a year and I'm still enjoying it. Besides the aforementioned issues in the video though I actually did encounter two other incidents with it: 1. I'm speculating that this was an issue with my provider more than the phone but it's worth mentioning. I somehow ended up having no voice service for several days, which started the day before I was leaving for a road trip. My provider couldn't figure out why and resolved to send me a replacement phone but it wouldn't arrive in time. Three days into the trip I ended up in a GSM-only area, the voice service all of a sudden was restored and didn't disconnect again. 2. My screen cracked under the outer layer, right along the fold. As it spread from the right side of the fold where it originated to the left, it left black bars above and below the crack along the crease. Each time I opened and closed the phone the crack spread. As soon as the crack made it's way all the way across on the sixth or seventh folding, the screen went unresponsive. Fortunately I had insurance, as the damage was covered.

I have been dailing the 2019 model since last year, motorola never bothered on selling the 5G in brazil for some reason, but eSim headaches aside, I love this phone, at the start of the year the hinge sensor stopped working or was misbehaving (the phone didn't know it was shut) I sent it back on warranty and motorola gave me a brand new 2019 model, now this model has a tiny black sploch on the top right corner of the foldable display Those problems asside, I love it for all the reasons you stated on your video. It is a great phone and I hope we get a new gen soon

We just picked one of these up for my wife a few months ago and she loves it. For those looking for a deal in the US with T-Mobile, and you're alright with the graphite colorway, you can buy one direct from T-Mobile for $500. That does lock you into only the one colorway, but it's hard to beat that price if you're already on the service anyway.

I carried the RAZR 5G for a few months and during that time it was so much fun to have people asking me about my phone. I couldn't help but feel like am idol when I flipped open the phone in front of them. When it comes to foldables, I believe the RAZR 5G easily takes the cake for the best looking. It's truly a fashion statement phone. I think if you use it for business and have a charger on hand, it could be a fantastic phone. I only opted to go back to the slabs because I wanted more battery on hand since I use my GPS and data a lot. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone who wants to try something new and look cool doing it!

If there's one thing I find refreshing, yet frustrating, is the 21:9 aspect ratio. Better for scrolling, better for videos, better for gaming, better for split screen. Only, most videos on KZbin are still 16:9. There aren't many cameras that natively support 21:9 footage, let alone push it (Sony being the notable exception). But then most phones don't even have 21:9. Only Motorola, Sony and LG. Everybody else just feels like they're years behind at this point.
@jomeyqmalone
@jomeyqmalone 2 жыл бұрын
When you say most phones don't have 21:9, I'm assuming you mean as a camera resolution? Because in terms of screens it's almost impossible to find a phone with a 16:9 screen anymore. And you can crop footage from any camera down to 21:9, or any aspect ratio you want. Cameras never really shoot in 21:9. Even in the days if film, the 21:9 ratio was usually a result of shooting with anamorphic lenses, the film stock itself wasn't 21:9. Digital camera sensors certainly aren't 21:9, and most aren't even 16:9. In both cases they're the result of cropping in editing (see the reasons why "4K" and "UHD" are actually different resolutions to understand how raw captured footage and the content that results from it are often different resolutions and ratios)
