The Sony MDR-1000X won't win any fashion awards; it's a bulky and very plain-looking headset, its cans studded with buttons. But what it lacks in style it makes up for in performance: I've used the Bose QC35, Sennheiser PXC-550 and countless other noise canceling headsets, and I can say with very little hesitation that the MDR-1000X has them both beat. These are the best noise canceling headphones of 2017 - or at least, the best wireless headphones that have been on my head in 2017 - and reviewing them has been a blast. Join MrMobile for the Sony MDR-1000X review!

I like when you review headphones,I'm like, yeah,I'll just stick with 40$ headphones since they look good(is subjective) and work fine, especially when you use realtek's software with them to get the sound booth experience on your head, maybe I'm to classy or too unconviced to go wireless when I know I'll need to charge them and I'll pay over 7 times the other ones for having to charge it later and use wires anyways.Well, what can I say, every man with his cup of tea, this isn't mine but hey,if it's a MrMobile Review, then I'll watch it even if I don't care about the topic in my life, might be nice to see Michael Fisher's opinion on something, plus the great quality makes it entertaining.

Really good review, thank you. I saw your Sennhieser PXC 550 review too, as I'm trying to decide between the two. One thing that you never mention in reviews is sound leakage. I catch the train to work and as I don't want to disturb fellow travellers leakage is a consideration. I've read that the MDR-1000x leak somewhat and the PXC 500 less so. What was your experience?

(FOR THOSE WHO ARE WONDERING) I think I know why these are cracking. It's the case and how it is stored. Before you store the headphones you need to fold the left ear cup into the headband, if you look at that motion when taking it off you would see that it bends the ear cup a bit towards you putting pressure on the part of the headband that connects the earcup. That's the exact same place where the cracks form. People who have had this issue all (guessing) used the travel case a lot and people who don't have it oftentimes have the headphones out and being used regularly. That part is weak for the very same reason why airplane windows have very rounded corners. Stress cracks can build in corners, what sony should have done is rounded that corner a bit more. So for anyone that have this headphone, be careful when folding it and putting it back on the case.

Lots of good comments here suggesting you seriously did spend time with the headphones - well beyond some of the other reviewers. As a MDR 1000X user, I have no disagreements with the accolades and criticisms you have with the device. However, I do disagree you went, "a little overboard" with headphone reviews. Now we have someone we can point to who has seriously reviewed a spectrum of devices. So tout it as a positive attribute of Mr. Mobile's contribution to humanity. I look forward to the next headphone review. Maybe a "best bang for your buck". Of course it has to be "mobile" device.

Nathan Mendenhall I agree with Devenant C. No need for that so it sounds bad and also "suddle" is really spelled "subtle" and "evan" is really spelled "even". Grammar corrections aside, he didn't say that the subtle look is bad necessarily, he just said that it's really nondescript or not exceptional, and that they're not very stylish. Also there aren't very many mainstream headphones that are "bright gold" and I think that would be the only pair of headphones that someone would be super interested in stealing.

I bought these and the bose to test them both. I think I'm going to keep the bose over Sony just because the comfort levels and less bulk. I already have very good headphones for sound and when you think about it, when you want a pair a headphones like these, the main purpose is noise cancellation. Yes, the Sony sounds better but in my opinion they both sound good and the slightly worse sound quality wouldn't really bother me if what I'm mainly going for is noise cancelling and just the best overall for travel. I'll take comfort over anything. You can't go wrong with either, but if the only thing you care about is sound quality, then Sony is definitely the way to go. If what you want is a lightweight headphone that is super comfortable, then go with the bose. Noise cancelling on both is very good so I wouldn't make a decision just based on that. It all comes down to what you want from the headphones. Only you can make the decision on which is better for your needs.

I finally ended up buying these and after a month, this is what I've discovered/still searching for: I was a bit concerned as while the sound has been clear and good, the MDR-1000x never had as much `oomph` (for lack of a better word) in its base and presence. But then this was through listening to it always via bluetooth from my computer (simple realtek audio + the Intel wireless bluetooth that came in the computer) & through my smartphone (Nexus 6P) and I figured, oh well, I guess this is what they (all the reviews I've been reading) meant by wireless vs wired and my only option to hear it at its best was wired and through a good DAC. However, recently by accident I connected it for the first time to my cable box (Bouygues telecom via it's Bluetooth option under settings) and boy was I shocked!! All of a sudden there was incredibly good presence and much better/deeper bass. So my questions to you are this > 01. Is there different kind of Bluetooth sources that you can connect to, to get a better WIRELESS audio output? 02. Is there anything I can buy to transmit via bluetooth from my computer/phone but with a more punched up Amp? I've seen some aptX wireless bluetooth transmitter/receiver sold online but are there anything similar to transmit LDAC audio? or is this only possible if I own a Sony bluetooth source (Xperia smartphone/Walkman/etc) 03. Does the concept of a DAC only make sense for wired sound and there's nothing to do for bluetooth wireless and we just need to rely on the in-built amp of the headphones? 04. Slightly off-topic from above but also relevant > I'm an extensive user (for long hours) and have found these to definitely be heating up (even if it's slight) and not feel as comfortable as the Bose QC35's (I almost bought the Bose but chose sound quality & features over comfort) - Is there any way of ordering replacement ear pads for the Sony MDR-1000x that are either from Sony or from any other 3rd part manufacturer that are much more comfortable than the Sony earpads? I've seen people take out the Bose QC35s and mod them to fit to the slots of the plastic ring inside the Sony's, mods on Dekoni earpads (Bose replacements) & also mods on Brainwavz earpads but are they not any that are sold by any manufacturer just for the mdr-1000x's?? Hope you guys help and thanks in advance for any help/thoughts/musings/time/banter!! :)

Hi, I use the Fiio E17k Alpen 2 DAC-Amp with my S7 Edge mobile phone. I currently use the 'Bose SoundTrue 1 around-ear headphones' with this setup. Do you think I should upgrade my headphones to the Sony MDR 1000x in order to- (a) listen to my music via bluetooth when I am travelling or do not have my DAC around; (b) listen to my music in the 'wired' mode through the DAC, i.e. use the MDR1000x (as a regular wired headphone) instead of the Bose SoundTrue headphones. While the (a) is pretty clear via the various reviews, it is the (b) that I am not sure about; as in would using the MDR 1000x connected to my Fiio E17k DAC via it's 3.5 mm wire really give me better sound? Thanks, Sameer.

I tried the QC 35's, the550's, and the 1000x's all at Best Buy and I ended up buying the 550's. So why did I choose the 550's over the Bose and Sony's? I'll explain why. While I did like the QC 35's comfort(you could wear these for hours)and noise-cancellation(very good)I didn't like the audio that was coming out of them while playing music I that it sounded hollow and had underwhelming bass and highs, which was very dissapointng, so was the deal breaker for me with these. Next the Sony's are the complete opposite of of the QC 35's they sounded good(they support aptx), but they were too heavy and uncomfortable(this was the deal breaker)for me and like Mr. Mobile said they can't pair to 2 devices at once, which is a let down. Also another thing that I didn't like about Sony's is the control pad which isn't as sensitive as the 550's is so I found it was unresponsive at time when I wanted to turn up the volume or skip to the next track. So I came to the 550's expecting to be dissapointed like I had been by the previous 2, but I was incompletely suprised when I tried them out. I found that they're almost as comfortable as the QC 35's(the 550's are actually lighter)and they sound as good if not better than the Sony's and just like the Sony's(the bass on the Sennheisers actually sounded cleaner and tighter than the bass on the Sony's which sound bloated on comparison)it too supports aptx which os a plus. The touch sensitive pad was more sensitive than the ones on the Sony's and while there were some still problems with the 550's touch pad I didn't have as much trouble raising the volume or skipping tracks with them as I did with the Sony's. So this is why I went with the Senns over the Sony's and Bose(this was an honest and opinion based review).

Solid looking set of headphones. I have multiple pairs but use Bose QC35 as my daily driver. I'm curious to see how they stack up in sound quality compared to the Shure se215, which are my reference point when it comes to sound quality. You discussed the ability to turn the noise cancelling on and off as a nice advantage, it might be worth checking out the Bose QC30. They're neckband style in ear noise cancelling with an identical sound signature to the QC35's but they have a feature that allows you to control the level of noise cancelling with a separate volume rocker on the remote and pump in the outside sound with microphones. (I have a pair of those as well and the effect is every cool)

Just a heads up to anyone looking at this device you can connect to 2 devices at the same time! You have to first enable A2DP music on the first device and then connect to the second

i can understand a mic for adding ambient sounds, but why modify the audio for noise canceling? that should only be done physically by the design of the ear cups and speaker case.

What is the call quality like? Seems like a lot of people are complaining that the caller cannot quite hear the voice. Have you found this issue? BTW.. great review.

Tushar Panchal I tried the Sony I did not see any problems with call quality. You'll just get additional background noise as if you were talking in speaker mode on a phone.

Mr. Mobile airways gives the most objective reviews. I loved Mr. Michael Fischer when he was with pocketnow. I love him more now. I still love Bose more than the Sennheiser and the Sony. I want a podcast from Mr. Mobile.

I've been using my MDR-1000x headphones as a music device with my phone, and with a PS4 as my gaming headset. It works great in both cases but I agree that the biggest issue is not being able to switch between devices; as I have to re-pair the cans every time I switch devices

Could these be used with a Bluetooth transmitter and a tv without having latency issues? I’m having a hard time finding latency specs on headphones. I’m looking for a really good pair that my dad can use as his headphones for music and tv....but I don’t want the sound to be off with the video when he’s watching tv.

Thanks for the review. When shopping around and checking out user comments, one factor keeps showing up, and that is that these devices aren't very durable. I tend to be easy on my gear, but traveling often means that things get banged and stuffed and otherwise mistreated. Do you have any comments about which headphones shine in the durability department?

Unfortunately the only ones I've used for a long period have been the QC35s. They're starting to collect dust in the cans and I do worry about the loosening of the ratcheting tighteners over the ears ... but otherwise they're okay!

Surprised it cant connect to multiple devices at the same time when my MDR950BT can! Its a very useful feature when you are listening to music or movies from PC and don't want to miss a phone call. I have my phone connected along and when calls comes in even the movie gets automatically paused!

If I had it to do over again I'd buy the 1000X. I still adore my QC35, but Sony's option to allow ambient sound through is just so useful, so often.

I've heard good things about the actual sound quality of this headset, but the fact that it can only connect to one device at a time was a deal breaker for me, plus the fact that I've heard they aren't the most comfortable headphones on the market and all the horror stories about build quality and cracks ensuing eventually turned me off and I went with the PXC 550 instead. Super comfortable, great sound, light weight, connects to my PC and phone and switches between them seamlessly whenever I switch between them too.
