Try using a big circle hook, the fish won't swallow it. And they're protected. Also a rod belt to prevent getting a hernia. Gloves are good, too. Wearing flip-flops in the rain? No way.

When I was 10 we were on a charter boat off NC. We went out for Red Snapper using squid and I caught a 8" grouper. My dad put it on his hook and dropped it to the bottom. A few minutes later the charter captain blew the whistle to reel in. As my dad reeled in, something hit the grouper and took off running. The captain started the motor and I had to run to tell him to stop. By time I got to him, it was too late. 1000 yards of 100lb line; on full drag, was gone. To this day we blame it on the knot.
