Rational People in the USA have seen enough of this despicable and extremely divisive president for the past 4 years. His acts were so beneath the integrity and dignity of the US presidency, not to mention about the 300K Covid-19 deaths who have died unnecessarily due to his incompetence in handling the pandemic.

Excellent dialogue, thank you. I truly hope that Canadian government would do the right things to re-establishing the long lost good relationship with China for the benefits of Canadian and Chinese people. Our great PM Pierre Elliott Trudeau was bringing Canada (first western country?) to establish diplomatic relations with China few decades ago that brought the joy to Canadian in spite of political pressure from other nations, now his son PM Justin Trudeau should do the same deed for Canadian. Canada as a prosperous, compassionate and peace loving western nation, we should NOT be part of the chaotic, dangerous and destructive cold war that are currently brewing rapidly.

No need worried for Cold War, Chinese ppl don't really hate Americans till now, but common ppl from United States all have a strong opinion about China, even though they neve been in China and don't even have heard of Wuhan before the virus, now, I live in Shanghai and go to Beijing on a regular basis, I don't see ppl arguing about wrong doing of America, only toward HUAWAI issue I see ppl sometimes have a national pride, but still, iPhone sales in Chine still strong, Starbucks are the most established in Every cities in China, McDonalds in every possible corner, American culture its very embodied in Chinese society, of course, TRUMP seems a joke to the Chinese ppl, many funny humor are made about the US President, it never was during other US Presidency, TESLA is selling like crazy, most sold car in the recent years, so you see, no hates toward Americans, not yet, every one think TRUMP its poker bluffing, I must also say, China's government did not engage in propaganda against US (it did with Japan years ago), and again Japan it is the most visited Asian Country in recent years, before the Pandemic. I love the opinion of Malcolm Gladwell, he is a right thinker, in order for world to proceed with peace and prosperity, US CHINA relationship it is essential, hope US to do more to stable the unnecessary worries about Americans and to say that China is the cancer of the world, that is totally unfair.

Since 40 years China has been making so much peaceful economical and political progress. Instead of following the western consensus and their wishes, like what happened in Soviet Union, Chinese found their own way to the success in all different aspects. Now it is not the time or too late for the westerners to bargain, argue and decide whether they could accept or contain/isolate China, rather how to embrace and cooperate with China. Like or not, China would continue to grow and soon become the no.1 superpower in the world because the reality has been proved that Chinese system is better than those in the west. That would be western another increasing anxiety and frustration. Instead of accusing and embarrassing China, or lecturing Chinese how to do, now it is the time for the western countries to not only beg the Chinese for the help in their western economical decline, like their broken infrastructure, but also learn from China how to peacefully respect and live with each other, instead of “winner takes all”.

I think it is difficult for the average US citizen to understand the BRI across the Eurasian landmass and its connection to the African continent. In spite of the huge Eurasian landmass of some 45 Million sq.km of which EU is less than a quarter of this landmass, the average US citizen would hardly understand its future impact on the economic of the landmass in the next 2 decades. And add in the African continent potential, the combined potential of the BRI could shape the future of this planet well into the end of this century!

Too many people are talking about the US-China relationship as one that must not be an either-or relationship without fully investigating into what this means. A none either-or relationship between two parties is possible only when both parties agree on working together to overcome the differences that make it an either-or relationship. When either party chooses to make any one of the differences out as an either-or option, the possibility of a non-either-or relationship ceases to exist. At this point, the only possible way to get past the particular issue is for the side that cited the difference(s) as an either-or choice to stop holding it as such, or for the other side to cede to the point and suffer the consequences. When neither side can find a way to get past the difference(s), the only option remaining is to fight. There is no walking away from the fight, as to not fight would be to cede one's position. Those on the sidelines cannot just wish things away. This constant statement of "we must not choose sides" is getting really tiresome. Spend the intellectual capital and weigh the right and wrong of actions, the right and wrong of intentions, the welfare of all against the welfare of some, etc. and pick a side based on considered judgement. There are innumerable visible and not so visible clues that let us know how to weigh the right and wrong of actions, the right and wrong of intentions, etc. We are taught this by our parents, our teachers, our friends, advisors, and on and on. Fundamentally, a selfish act is by definition wrong. A selfless act is by definition right. Bullying others is wrong. Helping those in need and the vulnerable is right. It's as simple as that. Get on, as you are able, with the business of serving the people, the community, society, nation, etc. Pick a side.

Excellent comment. When we are not using our intellectual capital and weigh the right and wrong of actions, the right and wrong of intentions, the welfare of all against the welfare of some, etc. and pick a side based on considered judgement, and just say "we must not choose sides", then we are unfairly treating both sides as equal, the bully and the bullied. I am picking a side. I condemn the bully and am on the side of the bullied.

Maybe Mr Gao is going to be proved right but right now this Global Pandemic that spread out of the Epicentre in Wuhan China has strained relations between the West and China. No denying that fact nor is this relationship likely to improve. In fact de-coupling seems more likely. Western owned Multinational Companies will be forced by, Western Governments using legislation, to relocate out of China over the next decade. Maybe this decoupling/seperation is best so as to stop the antagonism growing. PEACE!.

I agree with most of what David Brooks had to say. The one area that I disagree though is about work. The reason I disagree is because when you drive around the US you see blighted rural communities. These communities have not seen any economic favor since the late '70s early '80s. This is because all of the jobs aand growth is centralized in cities. If you want to get money into these rural communities I think a UBI is the effective way of giving life to these communities again. So while I agree a focus on jobs is politically good I think it also buries one of the most difficult issues that modern societies have which is how do you get money into the rural communities. They're not run by little farmers anymore they don't have anything. They're lucky to have a college in their town and then you wind up with some wealth in that town. It is the long death to the agrarian society that was perhaps propped up by the GI Bill. You could do a targeted program to try to get money into these areas but I think a UBI would be vastly superior to a targeted program which is going to really wind up helping the mega corp agricultural business vastly more than the people who need that buying power to rebuild their communities.

Which one is better for the people? And now China is re-developing Clark and Subic bases and linking them via high-speed rail. Where is the former colonial power, the USA, to provide development for the people of the Philippines?

It's hard not to care about the rising tension of these 2 major powers. If you worry about the future generation, you will worry that we make it to our next generation without having those 2 major powers kill us first by going to war. We all know that if these 2 countries ever go to war, it will be WW3. With better technologies, comes better dangerous weapons, meaning more deaths than in any war we have ever known. Hopefully, this does not come to past.
