I think a better question to start mainstreaming is “why do you want kids” instead of “why not”. Not having kids doesn’t change much but having kids changes ALOT and requires a lot, not just financially wise.

I had my (only) kid at 39 and was barraged with 'When? When? WHEN?' until I was about 35, then people gave up. My partner was also constantly questioned, though, which may be the cultural difference Milan121 referenced - he's Indian, and in that culture if you're hitched, you start a family, PERIOD. I think women get 'When are you having kids?' more often (implying that all women should want kids) and men get 'When are you going to settle down?' more often (implying that all men are monogamy-averse). Both are judge-y and nosy.

It also depends on the cultural background. I am Greek and in my culture both men and women are asked when they are having kids. Women are asked earlier, but men are totally asked as well. I guess family culture in general is very strong for Greek people, and it is exceptionally rare for couples to not want kids. Who knows maybe we are all indoctrinated too much to even know what we want 😛 In my opinion its a choice that should be made freely by the individual 🙃

American childfree guy here - I know this podcast got derailed a bit (and that's okay, I still enjoyed this! Haha), but it sounds like David's main reasoning for not wanting kids was because Jenny didn't want kids, and he simply thought: "Okay!" Basically just indifferent/ fundamentally doesn't mind either outcome, and the childfree outcome was what life (Jenny) presented. It really can be that simple! I personally chose to be childfree simply because I don't want to be a parent. Nothing against kids (I do like kids) but there's a big difference between liking kids and wanting to become a parent. I have absolutely zero desire to be a parent, and I choose to do other things with my life that do bring me joy/fulfillment in other ways. Raising children is not a life requirement. It's unfortunate that childfree individuals (especially women) get looked at as outcasts by the rest of the crowd when it's really not a big deal at all.

Anyone dealing with reversed psychology when it comes to wanting kids? When you don't want kids and your partner doesn't either. But because you are so determent on not wanting that life the other person starts doubting? Asking for a friend ofc

The only animal I would see for you guys is a cat. They're so independent and easy going. They're more like a roommate than a pet. Edit: I commented too quickly. I should have known you were fellow cat people 😄

Ultimately you should have kids because you WANT kids and not feel pressured to have kids because of society pressure, age, family pressure, or whatever it may be. If I have kids I will be happy. If I don’t I will still be happy. Don’t know if my mind would change but at my age I am a bit more selfish and have my own dreams and problems. I struggle with my mental health from time to time, i got places I want to travel to, experiences I want to do, live more care free and so on. I like being able to do what I want, go where I want and not have to worry about who will look after the kids. I’m very happy being Uncle Jack and a Cat Dad to 2 cats 🙏🏻

Getting a dog was a lot more work than I anticipated... My dog is almost three now and honestly I don't know if I've loved another creature as much as I love him. I have had the thought that I won't get another dog after him and it's pretty much because I know how devastating it will be when he does die someday. 😭 Edit: Oh yes, and we totally say "Tortoiseshell cat" in reference to the black/brown/orange cats. 😸

I think free speech doesn’t exist at all because no one is free to say exactly what they want without some person being offended by something 🤦♀️ I am quite bothered by people wanting to shut down anyone who doesn’t agree with their way of thinking .. that is a step too far for me

Was surprised that this weekend when we were asked about kids as a couple by a friend that my boyfriend said hes starting to think he'd like kids more than me. I think its because hes finally in a secure job. Lucky for me he doesn't mind how as I said if we do it it should be when we are closer to 40 and adopt. Too many kids already in the world, want to more to ourselves and pregnancy on the body is eeeekkk (maybe why women get asked more). Enjoy your week. Emma :-)

I'm a woman who doesn't want kids. I can't seem to find a guy who thinks the same. I've spoken to; Christian guys, Atheists, Agnostics, Preachers, and etc (I 'm a Christian so I would like a Christian guy). All want 2-5 kids. I was even called "mad" for not wanting kids. smh, I don't think one should have a kid just to make another happy, so I think lol I'm gonna die alone xD.

Hi Jenny. My apologies if this is too personal but since David not getting 'snipped' came up I'm curious if you've considered a bilateral salpingectomy (tubal removal)? We're about the same age and it's something I'm currently looking into since I want to be in full control of my own body autonomy and apparently it also lowers the risk of ovarian cancer. I've heard that women in general tend to face more resistance from doctors regarding sterilization but it becomes easier once we're in our 30s. I've also considered what my partner might do if something happened to me and wondered if he would start a family under different circumstances so if he decides to go for a vasectomy I want that to be 100% up to him with no pressure. Since I'm 100% on not wanting children myself I'm ready to pursue the options available to me. Wish the best for both of you whatever you decide to do. And I totally understand being worried about the deaths of future pets. I'm still grieving my cat that passed 13 years ago and I don't think I will ever get over it. He was the sweetest and most relaxed cat ever and sometimes I'll still have a little cry when I am missing him. I would love to have a new cat in my life to love and snuggle though but life circumstances have put pets on hold for now.

I just want to correct you about men having kids forever. It's not a good idea for men to have kids after the age of 45. The offspring will have a much higher chance of Autism or serious mental health issues.
