Woodworking: Making a Knife Block (Easy)

I like this design better than the regular store bought blocks. The open slots allow for better moisture dissipation. Expensive forged knives are prone to moisture damage, (both rust and water spots), so this could be a good solution. Of coarse, hand washing and drying your knives is a must as well. Best easy design I've seen, yet. open slots let the blades drain/dry off if they get put in wet, and it can be made without a router.

Thanks Muz, I just made one very similar to this using maple and walnut. Came out great and my wife loves it. I drilled a hole for the scissors to slide down in.

In wood wood class many many years ago was thought to cut off the two side end to make a proper cap to glue back, and we did it with a hand saw and hand plane.

Kewl - good design - open slots can be cleaned if you need to. I’ve built a few now based on something similar. An upgrade for the slightly more advanced - let your retaining blocks into the main block so they sit flush. I make mine 1/4” thick and usually from a contrasting wood. You have to remember to make the slots deeper by the thickness of the retainer blocks. Second upgrade i make a scissor slot in the angle block b4 gluing it on.

how hard would it be to make this with a locking key so you can take it apart and clean it.. if you have ever cut open a knife block its nasty

That would be a cool idea. But I never put a knife back on the block unless it’s been cleaned and dried.

@@TheMuzShop even clean and dry is not enough unfortunately. Cut open 9 out of 10 and they are growing crap. Hence the open air magnetic knife blocks.

Very nice knife block, & excellent tutorial. But those little wood sidebars keep niggling my mind - they tend to make the piece look like a repair job. Is there something else that could be done for keeping the knife blades from falling off?

Thanks for watching . As for the little wood sidebars , you could make the block not as wide , bringing the slots closer together and then enclosing the slots with another piece of wood the entire side. Checkout some other knife block videos to get some more ideas...

They were roughly 1 1/4" x 6" x 13" , But you can start off with whatever and when you are squaring it up you can cut it to the size you like.... My finished block is 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 10" Thanks for watching.

Basic tools? You call a tablesaw, a chopsaw and a router table basic tools? How am I supposed to get started with woodworking when the "basic tools" cost several thousand bucks?

Those really are basic tools for woodworking. Buy used ones Iike I did and still do.... I just saw 6-9 table saws on Creig's listed for under $300. Start off slow and a little at a time. Come on you can do it!! Thanks for watching👍👍

@@TheMuzShop My understanding of basic tool consists of a ripsaw, a crosscut saw, a drill, a srub plane and a smoothing plane, bench chisels and a mallet. All in all, 100-200$ and like 8 square meters of space, thats all I have. And I think that is the biggest problem for people to get started in woodworking, the mindset that you need a giant workshop and a ton of power tools which just isn't the case
