Railway Preservation Stories #2 | British Rail Class 43 HST 43018

In this episode of Railway Preservation Stories, we visit the Crewe Heritage Centre to take a look at an icon of high speed rail travel. 43018, one of the Class 43 HST powercars, arrived at Crewe in October 2020, and we speak to Brian Porter and James Mather about the work currently being carried out on the locomotive, returning the locomotive to original condition, and what future lies ahead for the powercar.

Great to see the correct lights back on. If anyone knows why did they change the lights on the power cars?

They went to LEDs and high intensity headlamps. It saved on changing bulbs.

Also, the individual light apertures look more contemporary. Obviously, the original lights look much better, but sealed beams behind fairings, like a ‘60s/70s car, are very dated.

My grandfather used to drive steam, then these diesel beauts. I always wondered. What's the fuel economy on a girl like this? I know nothing about them, just a car mechanic. I'm imagining 500 galon diesel tanks emptied from London to Edinburgh? It's easy to Google it, but you can't beat someone answering you who knows there girls intimately.

They've had a good run; 45 years and still many in service to this day. At least we have many power cars surviving into preservation, such as this one!
