I think when people don't raise kids themselves they interact with them in a very different way than the kid's parents and this is refreshing for the child. We all like variability. It is very emotionally taxing, after all, raising a child. Some are not burdened with that still appreciate the wonders of childhood and the magic of growth. If anything they probably appreciate far more of it.
