Hey Clarke I met an old dog trapper for the dse in Victoria about 25 years ago hunting in the high country he said Best bait he has ever used is .. he would get every month 4 ltr s of old cooking oil from the local fish shop !! As it had had everything cooked in it MANY smells he would put it in Small bottle dribble some across a game trail or road to the base of a tree …. Set the trap ….. as it’s water proof and as a dog walks with his nose down they will smell it walking the track/ trail !! And does not wash away cheers robbo

Works well... however, the bycatch of goannas, wild pigs and cats can be very high in some areas.

Thank you for being so diligent on checking the traps. Those dogs may be feral and need to be controlled but they're still dogs and deserve the respect you give them.

Here's an idea Clark, to allow dogs to come in to a trap, but not allow cattle in. You know that cattle are bullocking animals, whereas dogs are nimble, in comparison. Can you invent some kind of metal pieces that are easy to install and penetrate the ground, but will at the same time, hold itself in place against cattle knocks? It would also need to prevent cattle from moving past it, whilst at the same time, allow dogs in! Something like this: 1. Metal pieces that you can easily just hammer into the ground. In order for the metal pieces to hold in place, you may have 3 or 4 prongs that fork out as you hammer it into the ground. 2. The metal pieces would probably need to be 3 or 4m away from the trap. 3. The metal piece, once hammered in, may protrude out of the ground about 0.5 to 1m. High enough for cattle to acknowledge it. 4. You can place the metal pieces about 1.5 to 2m apart, around the trap. This may be all that's needed to keep the cattle away from the trap. 5. If 4. doesn't work, then you may consider looping wire between some of the metal pieces. Wire strung between some of the metal pieces, about 1m off the ground, would probably still allow the dogs in, but the cattle out. Regards, Dave (Perth)

Thinking outside the box, good skills. The best way I have found is to use steel posts and old wire, just like a cattle fence. You will see in the next few clips how some of these dogs pick up on slight changes at the trap sites and simply stay away

Hopefully with Ms Palaszczuk retiring as Premier of Queensland you can only hope that an incoming Premier is more sensitive to the need of Landowners that have to control invasive none native species, and will listen to those people on the ground who have the best information and not just to the supposed ‘experts’ with letters after their names who have no knowledge of what Landowners actually need.

Visuals, like feathers or a chicken head, nailed down often does the trick. Think what the are eating in that area and copy, set light, foam under pans not paper. Make very defined entry and exit paths and keep improving your ideas. Merry Christmas

I’ve heard stories of wild dogs heading into a small community and taking pet dogs back up in the mountains with them to breed. I’ve also seen a wild dog that looked German Shepherd in a state forest I hunt that just pinned the tail and took off as soon as it seen me
