I took a trip to Alcatraz Island to visit the shooting locations for the 1979 classic Escape from Alcatraz. The film made a big impression on my young mind, and it's time to finally check this one off the bucket list. What an amazing location!!
Escape from Alcatraz is a 1979 American prison thriller film directed by Don Siegel. It is an adaptation of the 1963 non-fiction book of the same name by J. Campbell Bruce and dramatizes the 1962 prisoner escape from the maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island. The film stars Clint Eastwood, and features Patrick McGoohan, Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau, and Larry Hankin. Danny Glover appears in his film debut. Escape from Alcatraz marks the fifth and final collaboration between Siegel and Eastwood, following Coogan's Bluff (1968), Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), The Beguiled (1971), and Dirty Harry (1971).
Footage from the film is used strictly for educational purposes to compare the 1979 locations to 2021.

I’ve been twice but always wanted to do the ghost tours there. I did Idaho State Prison last year and it was surprisingly open. Even the gallows and cells. Great job editing as always!!

Nice work Jared. Such a great movie. Clint was 48 when they filmed this. He seemed so old when I first watched this movie, probably at the age of 11 or 12 on Dialing for Dollars.

First time seeing Alcatraz was when I was stationed on the USS Coral Sea home ported in Alameda in 1977. We sailed past the island every time we went and returned from sea. When I got married my wife is from the Bay Area and we visited Alcatraz many times in the 80’s and 90’s. I always wanted to spend the night on the island when the park service offered it as part of a fund raiser. Tours were awesome. Former inmates gave talks, rangers gave actual guided tours and authors were in the gift shop signing books. Just returned to Alcatraz in April 2024 and what a difference in everything. Tours are now on your own with an audio player and you walk around. Not a great setup. Hard to follow the information and many times got turned around. They have greatly reduced the spaces one could visit back then. Did not see anyone giving talks or book signings. It was very disappointing to see how far downhill this once great had been. Thanks for sharing.

They didn’t drown. They forcibly stole a car from a motorist on the mainland a few hours after they left Alcatraz. The victim reported it to the San Francisco police dept and the FBI told all of them to be quiet since they wanted the public to falsely think they drowned

I haven’t seen “Escape From Alcatraz” till now. Great movie based on a true story of a daring escape from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Glad it’s not an active prison anymore. Not my ideal punishment home. And even to this day no one knows if those 3 escapees (Frank Lee Morris, and brothers John and Clarence Anglin) made it. Just disappeared into the night. Never found. I think the warden was right. They tried. Bu in the end, they drowned. Theoretically.
