We put our 3 sheep in our wooded pasture, along with a couple other animals, for 30 days & they did an amazing job clearing all the brush & lower branches. Makes it very easy to go through after them & clear out the overgrowth & downed trees. They absolutely love ferns if you have them in your wooded section. They are great for escaping through hot wire but ours never went anywhere.
@denisewilson8367 Жыл бұрын
Yes, woven wire or "hot" netting to keep them in. They are no where near as bad as goats for escaping tho. And they are more of a grazer than goats. But they still do a good job clearing underbrush.

That little Buggy is precious. I love the messy curls and her happy personality. She's a bright spot in all of your days, I'm sure. Hangry happens to all of us, I don't care who you are, haha so if that's the worst of it by which giving her an apple to munch on fixes things between meals, then life is pretty great! The sheep will be an interesting animal to have for the next few days. If you can/do give it a week, you'll get a good picture of what they'd be like, and need, if you were to consider them. Like you say, it's not like you have to raise 20+ of them. Two or three would serve your family well. I've never had sheep before. I did try lamb once and didn't care for it, but am willing to admit that it could very well have been the recipe and not the meat per say. I actually don't recall what the texture, etc. was like though I'd imagine it would be similar to pork. Great job getting all you do done in a day... all of you! Sharing this snippet of your day/life with us is a true pleasure to watch, so thank you. Take care, one and all! Heather

From experience, I can tell you that it's way easier and cheaper, in the long run, to let someone else raise your meat (except for chickens and rabbits) than it is for a small homestead to do. If you were going to raise to sell to others (the way you bought your sheep today - on the hoof) then it may be more attractive money-wise but if you weigh that with the amount of extra work, it's probably not worth it unless you are absolutely positively sure of your market. Personally, I think you've made a really good decision.

I always forget that people from Cali actually like to eat sheep lol. They come to Louisiana and cook us lamb chops and we are like ew, can’t eat it. @southloupriverhomestead4696 Жыл бұрын
There is not a general rule of 1 acre per cow. It is based on where you live, condition of the grass, rainfall, etc, etc. If anybody would like to know the average for there area check with the county extension office.

Speaking as someone experienced with both sheep and goats I agree with you 100% that your property is not designed for sheep. Honestly, with the two cows it’s already over stressed but if you were going to add livestock, goats would give you the best chance of success. Foraging definitely trumps grazing for goats and you do have some forage area but not enough for full time support. Whatever you do I know you’ll give it your very best effort. Y’all are an amazing and inspiring family.

Throwing supplemental hay and smaller padoc size would get you to higher manure loads and increase field productivity. Sheep and cows can be grazed back to back as they are not affected by each other's parasites. Follow with chickens to eat larvae, and spread manure. Cast cover crop blend over used up padoc and watch the fields jump productivity.
@claireskinner9077 Жыл бұрын
I predict once you see how easy they are to look after and harvest by yourself you’ll be ‘in the sheep business’. They are perfect for a smaller homestead, and they eat all of the grass the cows don’t. Plus they taste really good. Being Australian, sheep are the norm here. And they actually do well on poor grass. In fact, most farmers here don’t have them on grass, they put them on the stubble from the crops. You also don’t need 2 acres for a small flock of sheep. They can eat things other than grass, so you can use them the same way you have been using the pigs to keep the woodlands clear - just under plant it with things they can eat and they’ll be happy to browse it down.
