From 1936, but the song itself is nearly 159 years old, and composed by Michael William Balfe, from the opera of the same name. Wonderful Felix Knight sings, Antonio Moreno is the duplicitous "Devilshoof," and amazing, "ever popular Mae Busch," plays her part to the hilt as his lover! Gotta love her "spit curls!" Though starring Laurel and Hardy, they're only in this clip by a benevolent accident. As Oliver said, "We'll spread the glad tidings to the woild!" Anyone know the name of the beauty serenaded by Felix? She's really lovely!

Brought tears to my eyes. My late brother used to sing this. We all loved Balfe.

I can only imagine! I'm sorry that this made you sad, but hope that even through a trying moment, it brought back good thoughts of your brother! I also lost my brother not long ago, and so many little things bring him back to me! He loved early SNL, certain songs and was probably the smartest guy I'll ever know. I miss him a lot.

When coldness or deceit shall slight ... The beauty now they prize ... And deem it but a faded light ... which beams within your eyes ... When hollow hearts shall wear a mask ... ‘twill break your own to see ... In such a moment I ... but ask ... that you’ll remember me ... That you’ll remember, that you’ll remember me.

The song is entitled “Then You’ll Remember Me” from the opera “The Bohemian Girl” by Michael Balfe. The great Irish tenor John McCormack recorded it and it can be found on KZbin under that title and his name.

@varadero1839 You're welcome (-: I was reading some background on L & H's movies this past week and there was a reference to Paulette as having had an uncredited role in this film. Viewing this clip and looking at a photo of her elsewhere - well, the resemblance was to close to be anyone else. As a former tenor myself, I absolutely love Felix Knight's voice (also like Allan Jones). I wish there were more Felix Knight posted here as his recordings are almost non-existent on CD.

@JJRaff18221882 Thanks so much for commenting! It could be Ms. Goddard, but she's on screen for so brief a time it's hard to tell. Good hearing from you!

@patthecatman From everything I've read over the years, Ms. Todd was "snuffed," by a local LA mob. Apparently, she was "persona non grata" with some gunsels. I've viewed other locations, but if you have a chance, just type in her name on Wikipedia. The results are astounding, but not surprising. Thanks so much for writing.

@jackpotismydog I can't comment on the "eyes are the windows to your soul" remark, but the film, as the title says, is "The Bohemian Girl," from 1936. The correct name of the song is "Then You'll Remember Me."

Should be pretty close...I no longer have the libretto handy: Then You’ll Remember Me When other lips and other hearts ... their tales of love shall tell ... In language whose excess imparts ... the pow’r they feel so well ... There may perhaps in such a scene ... some recollection be ... Of days that have as happy been ... and you’ll remember me ... And you’ll remember, you’ll remember me ... Verse Two to follow... It won't let me put both in one.

@shanghaibenny2 Guess she'd do just about anything to be with "Devilshoof!" Stan's just the next step in her tawdry plot. Gotta love any performer who can wear "spitcurls" with such abandon! Thanks so much for your comment.

@varadero1839 another anomaly: thelma todd was to play hardy's wife, but she died mysteriously. the "ever popular" mae busch ended up in the role; thelma's name is in the credits, but never appeared in the film.

Sorry about adding my name to the list of those who corrected you on the song’s title. I didn’t read all of the comments or I would not have posted my two cents worth. The song is indeed very pretty however there is another contained in the opera which I believe is prettier and that is “I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls”. There are some very nice renditions of this song posted on KZbin including the one from the movie itself.

Hi again Brace67! I don't remember the dates, but I suspect I posted them both around the same time. This film had a strange story. I can't look it up right now, but a very beautiful comedienne had a big featured role. I think most of her appearances were deleted. She apparently had some underground mob connections, and was murdered! Her career was only beginning! Here's "Marble Halls." kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGfXeoKKfZeoask

varadero1839 The actress I believe you’re thinking of was Thelma Todd who had a featured role in this movie. She was found dead in her closed garage inside her automobile and the LA coroner ruled the cause of death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Absolutely nothing sinister here. Due to her premature death before the movie’s release, all of her scenes were removed except one. As a tribute to her, producer Hal Roach kept in her song of the Gipsy Queen. She was 29.

@varadero1839 good suggestion but it really doesn't look like Goddard to me. hehe. Thanks a lot for posting, this was a great laurel/hardy film I love this part of it. Felix Knight had quite a good voice and actually had a fairly successful opera career, later becoming a voice teacher. Jacqueline wells was very cute too.. anyone know off hand who did her singing for her?
