I have the same car, 7 years old. I get it serviced annually by main dealer, a bit of a cost compared to somchai mechanics, but they do it by the book. All other fixing I get done at somchai garage. My background is an aircraft technician superintendent retired. I think all conversations you had that were heard in the background were spot on. As a final thought, I would recommend a hot oil change, drain and flush, within a couple of thousand miles. Because the seals and bearings could be affected by the wrong oil you had in it.

Never trust them. They may work in a garage, but that doesn’t mean they’re machanics !!! I recently bought a motor bike and added a side car to it. The side car had no lights, so I took it to a shop for them to fit some. I said I would wait and I watched them do it. I could’ve done the work myself, but they said they could do it straight away and they had the lights. Anyway, the guy cut the wires too short and had to put a join in the wiring. He literary found the wiring plastic junction box under the side panel of the bike and inserted the wires to the new lights into this and forced the box back together, then wrapped loads of insulation tape around it !!! It only cost me 600baht including supplying the lights. I forgot to say he used secondhand wire also !!! At the end of the day it worked, but what a shit job !!!! So I payed, took it home, went out the next day and bought proper connectors and wiring, and did it myself, the right way. Which is what I should’ve done in the first place !!!

You can buy an OBD2 scanner for around $7 and connect it yourself - bluetooth and an app on your phone will show you any fault codes stored in the vehicle's computer. A mechanic may have a more accurate diagnostic tool, but it's worth investing in your own basic one. Out of interest is your Mazda built in Japan or Thailand? Check the VIN - if it starts with J it's built in Japan, or if it starts with M it's built in Thailand.

What a nightmare Ryan! Like you, I have no idea about modern cars. When I was younger and the engines were more accessible, I used to be able to sort out simple problems including fuel pumps, oil changes, windscreen wiper vacuums and ignition and light problems. I also changed cylinder head gaskets, carburettors and ground in new valves. This was on a 1946 Ford Prefect and the old trusted Morris Minor of which I had several over the years. However, now you can't even see the engine to change a spark plug, because everything is covered in. I have to say that servicing in and around Khon Kaen has always been first class even in little local garages. On the subject of the oil, after a change, the mechanics always put the empty container in the boot, plus the old filter, so I should check that it is the right oil, but never have until now. I will do so in future. In addition to our car we have an 34 year old Toyota Mighty X for our land. We also had a rat nesting in the electrical system, which there is very little that you can do to prevent, when you live in an area where rats are prevalent. Put it all down to experience now Ryan and let it go as there is little you can do about t due to the inadequacy of the Consumer Protection laws here. God bless you and the family 😀❤🙏

Hard to imagine they got the wrong oil for the service - they would know straight away when opening the bonnet that it is a petrol engine. The mind boggles. When we get a service in Thailand they put the old parts and the empty oil container in the boot in a plastic bag to prove what was replaced and what oil was used. If that happened in Oz you would have a claim against the mechanic to either refund you the cost or replace the incorrect items. Not sure if that would apply in Thailand or if you could be arsed going back to them to complain. For the air cond to be over pressure that them overfilling it when they replaced the gas. WOrse case it blows a seal or a pipe and you lose all the gas. Its not a hard job to remove some of the gas - no reason to have to replace anything or change all the gas. The car seems to be a lemon - for me now that its been fixed up and running well I would be selling it ( before it give you more grief) !!

Sadly, driving a 4x4 as a daily driver will set you back a lot per driven km in gasoline or diesel. Especially compared to this car. Yes, shocks and wheel bearings will go faster on bumpy roads, that isn't much different for a truck. True, the truck will last longer with the same shocks and bearings, also cost twice as much to replace (and won't last twice as long)

We've had a similar experience with a second-hand Isuzu Trooper we bought in Laos. Since buying, we've replaced most every suspension component, the brakes, clutch, steering column, gearbox, and to top it off found a rat nesting in our air conditioner! It was suggested to leave mothballs in the engine compartment and other areas while it's parked (rats can't stand the smell?). Vehicles just don't seem to be maintained very well in SE Asia, so second-hand can be a crap shoot (and finding a dependable mechanic can be tough). Best of luck!

I live in rural Southern California for decades, and the rats were a constant problem, one friend actually had a brand new car burn to the ground after only having it for a week, as the rats chewed through part of the wiring harness. There is one cheap preventative measure that I’ve learned and it works great, and is cheap. If you place dryer sheets (think Bounces here in America or something similar there) inside the interior panels, such as the one where your nest was found, it’ll keep the rats out. Seems they HATE It helps smell. You don’t need to take your car apart to do this, just tick them out n as best you can so that they are not unsightly or in your way. I changed mine out about every six months and never had another problem. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

I wouldn’t be too concerned with the oil. I use 5W 40 in my Daihatsu and it says right on the container gas or diesel. It is a full synthetic oil from Toyota. New tires would always go in the front, BUT if you have a wheel alignment problem, it would be good advice to not put them there. Until you correct the wheel alignment.

I would highly recommend a Toyota truck as well. Very reliable vehicles and parts and mechanics that really know the vehicle are available everywhere here in Thailand. This is my 3rd Ford Ranger that I’ve owned over the years. The other two were back in the states. The last being in Alaska. I put that little guy through some pretty rough stuff heading back to a secret fishing spot. Never had any problems with them. I keep up with the maintenance of them, don’t abuse them, but will put them to use. Currently have the Sport 4x4, and love it. It does the best on the highway, (we can drive BKK and back, make another trip to Buriram and drive to Prakhon Chai before having to fill up. I’ve also had it out on some trails around Phanom Rung in 4WD and a few other spots that I wouldn’t even think about taking my 2 wheel drive Toyota. Living on a farm here in rural Thailand I wouldn’t consider anything but a truck. Oh yeah, I also got an engine spray to clean and protect the engine from rat infestation. They recommended to use every two weeks. Easy to use. Just spray the cold engine wait 15 minutes and wipe her down.

For someone who knows nothing about cars, particularly in Thailand, take it to the dealer. They are at least trained and are provided with the proper tools that the roadside mechanics either do not have or can not afford. As a farang myself in Thailand, and also a mechanic, my best advice is be weary of secondhand vehicles if you dont possess the ability to spot lipstick on a pig. Rodent damage is commonplace. In the six years I've owned my Mitsubishi Triton since new, all the faults were related to mice and rats, my repairs were professionally done by myself. Diesel oil would likely not be a problem as most are compatible with petrol engines, only containing added detergent, which can be beneficial in the short term. Shock absorbers, tyres, brakes, batteries, filters, and so forth are regular consumables, not to be confused with reliability. Remember this, whether measured in milage or hours, Thai values are about 5× what the equivalent would be in a Western country? Routine maintenance isn't routine. it's generally get fixed when it breaks.

When you buy tires here in Australian you need to ask for a wheel alignment. The balance comes free with the tires but the alignment is an extra cost. If you watch them do the alignment it will go onto a machine that that does the job. You will see them get under the car and adjust the rods. I don’t imagine most tire shops in Thailand would have one. They are a very expensive machine. It’s a good idea to take the oil you want with you when you get an oil change. Most shops will have very basic oils in house. Most cars have a recommended oil.

Depending on the issues we take it to a local (trusted) mechanic or the dealership. Don’t feel too bad, this sort of thing happens everywhere. Don't need any qualification, or experience so mostly it ends in inferior quality job done. If you really want a superior quality, you do it by yourself, or you know someone who works well but mostly they are busy, or you pay a premium price (but this is possible in cities otherwise in rural area you must go far to find the premium garage) Moreover, many Thai don't do the mechanics on their vehicle because it cost money. They will do the strict necessary then when they feel it's getting not good, they sell it...

Also the diesel engine oil should not have d damaged ur engine. Diesel oil has a detergent to help clean the inside of the engine. My friend alwsys used diesel eng oil in his audi quattro turbo 20 valve to clean inside.
@jaideedave10 күн бұрын
@@stuartballantyne2358 You are correct sir. All they did was probably put in high detergent oil. Recommended for diesel engines, but should not harm your engine if you had it changed out.

Mazda 2 is bulletproof. If the problems from the less than competent mechanic have been solved then it should last another twenty years. New oil and oil filter every 10kKm is vital. Have had my second hand one for 8 years and it's up to 260,000km and still runs sweet.

Ryan, of course, I only see the roads that you drive on that you've shown in your vlogs, but when you showed us the Mazda that you were buying, I commented to the effect of 'ohh no, not a tiny car like that for dirt roads'. Perhaps economy was in your mind when buying the Mazda, but it's the wrong car for where it's driven imo. My Thai fiancee lives on a small family farm on the edge of her village. She has an Izuzu Dmax that's almost 20 years old, I think. She has had very little done to it in the two years I've known her... new battery when I was there 2 years ago, I think a minor A/c issue, but nothing much else. It's built for rural roads. I'm like you too... I have very little mechanical knowledge beyond checking fluid levels and tyre pressures. While the problems caused by shoddy mechanics aren't your fault, with the tyre wear, depending on how much distance you're driving week to week, or month to month, it's been recommended for donkeys years to check tyre pressures and signs of wear at least monthly, if not more often. Doing that simple thing could have avoided having to buy new tyres. Definitely buy a vehicle more suited to the terrain on which you drive next time. Good luck. BTW... If you've been able to get Damo to eat more food on a regular basis, it definitely looks to be working. Your lovely wife is looking a lot better in the past few vlogs across both your channels.

I’ve had my Mazda for 15 years with not a single repair or issue !
@TTWZN10 күн бұрын
Di nit wait six months, you will get less foe it and maybe once again other issues will come in. Sell it quickly or trade it in at a dealer for a good price and rebate on a double cab pickup. Do not wait just commit and do it and will reduce the stress about a car.

Forget local garages, pay extra but get the right job done by only using a main dealer for your brand.
@AntiTheismForever10 күн бұрын
Always a risk dealing with small mechanic shops. Mazda's are generally reliable, use a Mazda dealer to maintain your car service intervals. If the dealer gets the service wrong they should fix free of charge. Never buy a used car without a good mechanic looking it over first.

It takes a lot of guts to present your unfortunate situation on YT. Rats can be a problem even in urban areas of the US as they can crawl inside and cause all sorts of issues. A new car isn't going to help this problem, so recommend researching solutions like regularly spraying a strong essential oil solution regularly around accessible areas, especially the engine compartment. Also would recommend spending a bit of time to understand the main components of a car to at least be somewhat knowledgeable. IMO, looks like that suspicious shop took advantage of your trust; very disappointing.

Yes, a new car may lose 20-30% off the lot, but you'll not be shelling out 20-40,000 baht on repairs, and you're going to hang onto it for many years, maintained properly. Sorry, but you cannot lose.
@smileoften-ft3hq10 күн бұрын
Agree if you are going long term ownership and do proper maintenance the cost averages well over the years.

I doubt they would put front shocks (struts) in the rear, as they would be complexly different! Wheel alignment so far out, you should have noticed car was not tracking correctly ?? I think you should also check tires at least fortnightly, worn tires are bad, especially wet season !

Being a former mechanic myself. The new vehicles with all the high-tech gear require diagnostic equipment that cost the repair shop a fortune. In some ways its great, in other ways is very bad. (1) How often does the mechanic use the expensive equipment? (2) is the high-tech equipment cost to the mechanic worthwhile or a bourdon? (3) how many models does that equipment work on? (4) how soon will it be superseded or require an expensive software upgrade!!?? Note - just a charge lead on an upgrade will cost a fortune for something that looks no different top your mobile phone charger! Worldwide mechanics get a bad rap. How often did I get a vehicle that had not been serviced well since new. Many cars & motorcycles are driven till they fail, presenting the mechanic with numerous issues to resolve. He now has a customer who a - hopes it won't cost much b - how long before I get it back..."of course" If the news isn't good, then often all hell breaks loose (drama). Are the parts available is the first issue When will the parts arrive Did it cost How much!$? Oh for joy" Note mechanics world-wide are a dying breed. In some countries it's not uncommon to wait months for repairs, & you bet it all cost a lot more than ever before 30 years ago, an engine would be up for a engine overhaul at 50,000ks Now engines are doing 500,000ks and still running. It still costs a lot to own & operate a small workshop. NOTE - insurance repairs can take many months!!!!

Did they put a laser on the front and rear tyre to align them with the new front tyre? Cause if they didn't, same problem, just going to wear the shoulder out fast.

The problem with Thailand is a lot of people don't like to say that they do not no something, so if you don't no and they don't no they will just try and bluff it and hope for the best. If you can afford it buy a Toyota Hilux or land cruiser , get it serviced regularly and keep it forever you will be able to pass it down to the children it will still be going stong when you are not.
@nospaces210 күн бұрын
I used to work for a company that uses Hi-lux and Land Cruisers as the base to build armoured vehicles and they are supplied to at least 2 countries' special forces and also many country's embassies. They use Toyotas for a good reason!

I don`t want to appear as a wanna-be smart type, but you should always think about what they might think and double-check everything. I have a garage in Tanzania that I always use. I know little about cars, but I normally ask an uncle to do it. He knows them, talks to them, and stays and follows what they do. It is quite common that good parts are being changed with old parts... so you need to have someone there to watch them. And we always use the same garage, if possible.

I Just spent 16000 baht for a Thai to install new cement counter tile and sink. It should've been a two day job. After 8 days and having to keep buying tile because of his mistakes, I told him to go home and not come back (I had already paid him). Now my kitchen water pipe drips (after he changed it). I will do the job myself. What I've learned is that Thais often don't know what they're doing. This guy was a cousin of a friend who said he knew how to do this work.

If the garages messed up, then they should be liable for fixing it!
@fhorst026 күн бұрын
Sorry, not in Thailand. There is no liability. And publicly complaining about it will give the company a bad name. Doesn't matter if it is true or not, doesn't matter how obvious and bad they fcked-up... Going public, you need to pay a hefty sum, or spend time in jail. Defamation laws... Heck, even tourists aren't safe, placing a negative review on Tripadvisor did land one in jail!!! (Wesley Barnes, 2020, google it) So be aware, there is no liability and no way to publicly shame a company for their bad work.

New battery should be around 2000, if you leave your old one with the shop. This is a small engine. I've just repaced my battery in my Kia minivan, and it costed 2300 baht ... Front shocks should cost around 1500-3000 baht / pair. The high pressure can be caused by overcharge or faulty regulator valve at the compressor. (As well as not correctly working fans at the radiator, for example clogged up with dirt) Fixing the A/C overcharge is simple, just connect the gauge set and check the high and low pressure, if the high side is too much, release some gas from the system ... IF your radiator is clogged, you should give it a thorough rinse with high pressure water, and it will be good as new.
