The pacemaker was actually invented in Canada by John Hopps in 1949 but not very practical for use in humans until a decade later. In 1950 it was a boxy item with wires inserted via a catheter to the heart capable of both defibrillating and pacing the heart rhythm. Sweden developed the first "implantable' battery run pacemaker.

The presenter missed one hugely important thing about the seat belt, Volvo made the patent free for everyone to use. They decided that the invention was so significant, it had more value as a free life saving tool than something to profit from.

Every list I've seen of Swedish inventions misses a really important one, the "rollator". It's basically what americans know as a "walker" but with wheels. A Swedish woman named Aina Wifalk suffered from polio so she built herself a rollator to get around easier. Today it has given my 80 year old father his freedom back. It's much better for old people to keep active, and this gives them the support they need while they can still walk around, instead of remaining seated in a scooter.

My 85 year old mother got one, at first mostly because she'd gotten a bit worried about the icy pavements in the winter, and for it being practical when bringing home grocery etc. Then she "managed" ("I don't need one of these..". Similar to "I don't need any hearing aid." Lol) to get my same aged dad to get such a vehichle as well. Whithout it I doubt he would get out of their appartment as much as he actually does now. And if one gets tired (like my dad qjuickly does these days), you can rest on it as well due to its clever construction. A truly great invention which you see everywhere here in Sweden.

Fun fact, Anders Celsius did put the boilingpoint at 0 and freezing point at 100. It was Linnaeus that recommended him to turn the scale so 0 was freeze and boilng 100

The graphics chip for computers and the gps was invented by a Swede (Håkan Lans), The propeller for large ships was invented by a Swede (John Ericsson), The sferical ballbearing was invented by a Swede (Sven Wingquist), The dynamite was invented by a Swede (Alfred Nobel) and many many more wonderful things :)

He didn't invent GPS. But he uses satellite navigation (GPS) and radio communication to increase safety so that craft do not collide. The system is called STDMA, which stands for "self-organizing time division multiple access". In 2004 it was adopted as the world standard in aviation.

The small device developed to connect eletronics are named after vikingking Harald "The Bluetooth" Gormson and the Bluetooth symbol are a combination from two runes in his initials ᚼ("H") och ᛒ("B"). As others have mentioned, Swedish-American (one of the many Swedes who emigrated to America in the 1800s) John Ericsson invented the propeller. He aldo constructed the USS Monitor, famous from the civil war. Fun Volvo fact. When American Irv Gordon in 1966 picked up his brand new Volvo P1800 at the dealership he fell in love with it so completely that he just couldn't stop driving it. When he passed away in 2018 he had driven it 3.2 million miles, and obliterated all sorts of car mileage records. There is no stopping a Volvo!

Here's an invention you won't hear about on any KZbin video. My great grandfather Douglas Andrew Billany (1865 - 1918) was half English and half Swedish and born here in England. He invented _Stocks and Dies_ which was patented in 1902. It cuts threads on iron rods etc. In other words, it turns iron rods into screws, bolts etc. His second eldest son, Walter Billany (1891 - 1968) took the patent to the USA when he emigrated in 1915 and the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan was the first to use it. My great uncle Walter became an American citizen in 1922 and originally worked for Ford and his descendants still live in the USA inc. Juliette Van Otteren who is a renowned photographer whose name appears in the Who's Who of American women. She's a blue eyed blonde like her Swedish ancestors. So there's another connection between Sweden 🇸🇪, the UK 🇬🇧 and the USA. 🇺🇲

As a swede I thank you for your admiration of our small but adventurous country. Yes. We have been pretty good at inventing really really useful things. Well not me personally of course but videos like this lets us burst out in national pride once in a while. Well needed since we can be a bit in the introvert side 😁. May I also add that despite our mere 10 million strong population we are the worlds 3rd biggest music export after the US, 360 million and the UK, 55 million strong populations and have more hits on the US pop top 50 of all time than any other country counting artists and song writers/producers. 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪

Great video :) There is a musical called "Kristina Från Duvemåla" about a couple who emigrate from Sweden to America during the 1700 or 1800s, due to the poverty and such in Sweden during this time. I especially recommend reacting to the songs "Du måste finnas" by Helen Sjöholm, and "Guldet blev till Sand" by Peter Jöback. There should be versions with English subtitles on youtube, there are also English versions of these songs but I can't remember their names.

The two engineers that started Volvo were employees at SKF. As a parting gift from SKF they were given the rights to the name Volvo which was the name of one of the ball bearing products that SKF made but had discontinued.

Two other Swedish inventors who I think fit very well among the others are Carl Linnæus and Johan (John) Ericsson. Linnæus was the author of the "Systema Naturæ", the system of description and classification of plants and animals that is still used today. You have probably heard of Johan Ericsson, but didn't know that he was was a Swedish naval captain and engineer. He is usually considered the inventor of the first working propeller. He was also the man behind the gunboat Monitor with its rotating cannon tower which fought the Confederates Merrimack in the battle of Hampton Roads during the Civil War 💀🫣.

Not sure if you want to learn more about the Swedish military, but if so I would recommend the 'Jägare' series, about the Swedish Rangers. In 16 episodes you will follow a group of conscripts from their very first day until they graduate. A really good series. One thing though, try to reach out to the community to see if someone can translate at least the 5- 6 first episode, since they lack subtitles. (And I am sure that you will find someone) Nice reaction...as always!

Something very much used for war. Ultrasound diagnostics was pioneered in Glasgow, Scotland because it was used in the shipyards. Ian Donald, Tom Brown, and John McVicar collaborated with Lund Uni. Another invention of big importance was the " kakelugn ", ceramic tile stove around 1750. It saved the swedish forests from going up the chimney. It could store the heat very efficiently. Later the AGA was another similar idea

Spoiler': You did mention dynamite in the beginning of the video and yes dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel. Later he found out how much people hated him for it when his brother died and people had thought that Alfred had died. About (one of the) ultrasound technology pioneers: As I have been told, engineering genius Hellmuth Hertz was in an American war prisoner camp after ww2, but weren't allowed to stay in the US for political reasons. Niels Bohr (friends with Hellmuth's father, Gustav, Nobel laureate 1925) and some Swedish physicists snatched him up and were able to make sure that he could continue his education in Lund, Sweden, were he later became professor in electrical measurement technology. As a Swede I did of course knew about the SEAT belt. What they forgot to mention in the video was that the inventor and Volvo did an open patent for the seat belt so that any car manufacturer cpuld use it wothout cost. Since it save lives Volvo thought that it would be free.

But it's a none 'end stage' of life, and a lot of other people also get kidney failures. I have done dialysis for 1.5 year now and expect to get a new kidney before the summer. @@Erriond Sounds great that you got the chance to get a new kidney, they are also working on artificial kidneys now. But that is what I know not something that is available yet. Sadly not very many patients that has end stage diabetes (no working kidneys) have the opportunity to actually get a donated one. And even for those who get it, the case of kidney failure of the donated one is not zero. So for most patients being connected to a dialysis machine until the end of their life is the sad reality for many.

Gustaf Dalén was known for his technical innovations and the AGA lighthouse, an automatic lighthouse, was one of his significant inventions. The AGA lighthouse was introduced to the market and quickly became a world leader in maritime marking and improved maritime safety.

Sweden was the first country in the world that had a free mandatory 6 year school for all children, in 1842. In that way the teachers could pick the clever ones for further studies and give them further free studies, even if the childrens parents were poor. In this way Sweden got many more engineers, doctors, teachers, administrators, business owners and so on. Some of the engineers became successful inventors. That’s how the long tradition of many inventions per capita started in Sweden.

There was an American artist of Swedish and Finnish descent, Haddon Sundblom, which created the images of Santa Claus for The Coca-Cola Company. Sundblom is best remembered for his advertising work, specifically the Santa Claus advertisement. It was he who drew Santa Claus in a red suit during the twenties when he painted for The Coca-Cola Company, starting in 1931.Sundblom's Claus firmly established the larger-than-life, grandfatherly Claus as a key figure in American Christmas imagery.

A small note on Skype… as some may know, Microsoft for a while had 2 products called Skype and Skype for business. Contrary to the name they both were totally different products with different underpinnings. When Teams came out and saved everyone during the pandemic they scrapped Skype for business that was formerly known as Lync before Microsoft bought it and replaced the modern underpinnings with Skype technology! So Microsoft Teams is now built on the same Skype platform as today’s consumer Skype, with added corporate controls of course. But the base for todays Teams is original Skype 😊
