This was only a small segment of the Tattoo. Other bands from overseas and performances from dance troops, etc. also take part in the Tattoo. Watch a full video of the Tattoo. Doesn't really matter which year you choose. Also, I suggest you watch the Remembrance Sunday ceremony from the Cenotaph in London. A very solemn but impressive ceremony remembering the dead of the two world wars. It is an annual event which takes place every November.

Thought the 40th anniversary for falklands was on as its the 40th commemoration now with TV documentaries and televised events remembering the war of 1982. You would've thought if you were after followers that a video about the Falklands today would have more traction as its in peoples minds whereas the tattoo seems out of the blue and not relevant currently, unless your just going for Scottish nats.

The pipe major carries a mace, my uncle had one when he lead a flute band. Grew up in a town with a pipe band used to hear the practicing in their gardens at night. Our local pipe band may be he only one to do the Can Can. You could check out the D-day piper, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers

I am one of the Pipe Majors in the front rank for this Tattoo in 2012. It was a great experience to travel their and lead the Canadian Army Contingent. Its a month of shows every night 26 total . Good to hear and see this again. Top Secret was part of this show as well.

As an Englisman, I cannot help but get goosebumps when I hear the skirl. As an AB in the 70s Navy, on a Rosyth based ship, we took aboard a piper from the Queens Borderers to pipe us into port on our Med Cruise. He stood on the bow as we entered harbour, thousands turned out to see him play us in...I am still moved to this day.

I was a piper from the Citadel in the 1991 Tattoo. Back row of every show just in front of the drummers. Saturday night fireworks going off 100ft overhead and feeling the burnt black powder hitting the back of your necks.

To add to this, the mace is a common implement carried by drum majors in the Commonwealth as well as in the US and is used by both military and civilian (generally)( high school bands). In high school & college marching bands it's generally used for flourishing where it gets spun around snd sometimes thrown up and caught. In military bands it's used to deliver instructions to the band like to signal a direction to turn, to prepare to and stop playing, and so on.

The troops in red jackets and yellow striped trousers are Scots Greys, the only mounted Scottish regiment. Some years ago, an RCA recording of their pipe band playing Amazing Grace became a number one seller in North America

It bears mentioning that these Highland regimental band members are in fact, serving British army soldiers. Many of whom have seen front line action in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world. As one can see by their service medals worn on their uniforms. Thank you for your respect.

The man at the front and the others leading the massed bands are known as "Drum Majors" (although they are usually sergeants or sergeant-majors - what I think you would call master-sergeants) and the stick that they carry is called a mace. A mace was originally a weapon for hitting with, but these are ceremonial ones!

I always find the bagpipes to provide the most stirring music. It always makes all the hairs on my body stand on end. What you don't get from the video is the volume as it's a very loud instrument and at an event like this, it really is a wall of awesome sound. I lived in Scotland for 14 years and the place and the people were superb. I've visited many countries around the world and nothing else comes close to the beauty of Scotland.

Watching from the UK 🇬🇧 I took some soldiers and provided medical cover for the whole month of the tattoo. What you don't know is after the performance all the performers go back to the barracks where they are staying and the Bar opens!! Eventually someone will start playing and it turns in to the most amazing ' jamming' session. Also as the massed bands march off the esplanade there is a fleet of coaches waiting and they drive up load and drive off almost without stopping, it's an amazing feat of military precision and timing.

As a citizen of Edinburgh, nothing makes me prouder to see a citizen of another country, being in awe of the spectacle that is the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Every time I hear it, I can feel patriotism flow through my veins. The Tattoo is held in August every year in the grounds of Edinburgh Castle and is normally booked solid for YEARS in advance. Its also really great that military bands from all over the world also get to perform. Love it!!!

I got to see the tattoo because my friends who had tickets were too drunk so my sister and I (who also were quite drunk lol😢) thought - why not? I used to think it was cheesy till I saw it in person. I went about 35 years ago. We had always said to my Father that we would go one year and never did. Shortly after he passed Mum and I went. We loved it but we cried a lot too. Never been able to go since. But i think once you have experienced it. It is something you never forget. It is sooooo much better live. The beat vibrates your body. AMAZING.

I live in Edinburgh, but have only ever been to the tattoo once, in 2014, when a visiting friend managed to get tickets. (I think the prices are comparable with major theatre productions - but they have to be booked many months in advance because demand always exceeds supply!) It runs for the 3-week period of the Edinburgh International Festival, which usually starts at the end of the first week of August. It is an outdoor event and so, there's always the risk that the weather will turn wet and it can get quite cold as darkness falls - and if I went again I'd probably take a seat cushion, too... Comfort considerations apart though, it is truly amazing. Apart from pipes and drums like these, there are acrobatic military displays from all over the world, including the use of motorbikes when we were there - real precision-based, fast and death-defying stuff. Ever-changing images get projected onto the castle frontage throughout the performances too - and coupled with any distant views you might have, you literally don't know where to look, there is so much to see. Lots of people favour the finale, when a lone piper can be seen playing from the castle battlements, and everyone sings Auld Lang Syne and God Save the Queen. If you ever have the chance to go there, move heaven and earth to do so - there are other military tattoos, but the setting of this one makes it a unique event, whose memories you'll recall for a very long time.

During the course of the Napoleonic Wars the French lost more than 10 Eagles, the first at Austerlitz in 1805. During the charge of the Household and Union Brigades at Waterloo, the Scots Greys took the Eagle of the 45th Line (Sergeant Ewart, commissioned for his action) and the 1st Royal Dragoons took that of the 105th Line (Capt. Kennedy Clark and Corporal Stiles). Overall, the British took seven Eagles, not all on the battlefield, 1 at Barossa in 1811, 2 at Salamanca 1812, 2 found in Madrid after it was captured in 1812 and finally 2 at Waterloo in 1815.

Thank you girls, so glad you enjoyed. The Tattoo has various bands, dancers etc etc. from around the world. Its heart warming when the spectators, also from around the world sing Auld Lang Syne, near the end. The Tattoo lasts say two hours if memory serves me well. At the closing, theres a gathering of all the performers who then disperse section by section, leaving the pipe bands to march out playing the Black Bear and Scotland the Brave or perhaps even (in English for you) "We are not away to stay away", as they march(squeeze) down onto the Royal Mile. My friend and I went on a 16 day trip throughout England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in 2018. One of the highlights was to go to the Military Tattoo and Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. Loved it. To say it was amazing is an understatement. Absolutely go if you can. In 2018, the show also had laser lights and was so memorable. I’m so glad I went and would definitely go again given the chance.

I was lucky enough to be in the Edinburgh Tattoo in 1999, I was 17 & it was amazing. I was in the Tattoo choir & the women wore kilts, they were basically an ankle length version of the normal kilt. I've been too see it twice too & it's breathtaking!!

I've been to the Edinburgh Tattoo several times over many years. It is an amazing experience, largely due to the backdrop and surroundings. It has changed over the years, and whilst it is still military based it has seen the introduction of many more dance troupes etc and lost many military elements. Personally I preferred it before these changes were made. However it is still an amazing experience.

My late father was in The Prince of Wales 3rd Carabiniers Dragoon Guards; his younger brother was in The Royal Scots Greys. When the British government started merging army regiments, it seemed like karma that these two regiments were merged and became The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

Imagine you're in a field in a foreign land a few hundred years ago. You're about to go into battle again. Those pesky Brits are back! You are standing shoulder to shoulder listening to their normal bugles giving orders - but out of no-where comes the loud sound of the bagpipes coming straight at you! The bagpipes were a weapon as much as a marching beat because they frightened people who didn't know what the hell that noise was! :-D

we have tickets for the Tattoo this year, my brother and his wife are travelling up from England and we're travelling down from Aberdeen in the north east of Scotland. I can't wait to spend a day with them and go to see the Tattoo.

Thanks for taking the time to find out the derivation of the word “tattoo”. I would never have guessed that it comes from a Dutch phrase, and love the idea that it was originallly a way of preventing soldiers from staying out all night, drinking. It’s a little bit like the staff calling “Last Orders” in British pubs, prior to closing, although I’m not sure if most pubs do that now.

W we love Scotland so we pick a place every year and all of us go including their partners. We rent a home there or an apartment. It's way cheaper. I've never been to watch it but it's broadcast every year on tv and I always watch. For me there's nothing to beat the pipes and drums. It always makes me want to march along with them, but that's the whole idea. I may be biased but I think we do pomp and ceremony etc better than anyone else. But then we do have a lot of history.

Nothing touches the P&D for sound, colour atmosphere. From the moment the sound of the bass drum and our drones kick in. Absolutely stirs our blood. Black Bear the best!

Ah Love the Royal Edinburgh military Tattoo, Iv been 6 times and going again this year. They do have some afternoon shows as well as the evenings, tickets range from around £40-£60 depending on where you’re sitting and what deal you get. It runs for 5 or 6 nights then moves on, I think they travel the world taking part in various Tattoo’s. Love the reaction.

My dad was a childrens entertainer and I have appeared on stage in Princess Street Park many times as a child "stooge" I remember going to the Tattoo - when you are there, the sound the Bagpipes make is awesome, the vlog does not show how small the area they have to perform. I remember once I saw some motorbikes doing tricks...OMG...inches to death, SO exciting for a kid to see!!!! Thanks for bringing back some long lost memories of special times with my dad.

I've have been blessed to attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. My family (Clan Boyd) came to America indentured from Scotland in 1626 courtesy of the British. I'm very happy they did. We have served in every war this country has fought since that time, Including the revolution and the war of 1812 where we got the "thank" the Brits for the opportunity. Really enjoyed this! Brought back some great memories of when I visited Edinburgh Castle in 2014. The volume of this must be insane because one set of Scottish bagpipes are really loud (and that’s coming from a deaf guy 😂) so all of them together must be heard for miles around. The drumming is also really hard. As a drummer, I can’t do any of that. Here’s a fun fact for you: Remember the video you did on Trooping The Colour? At this years event, the drums were made by Al Murray’s drum company 🙂

I’m English and l have been to the tattoo it makes me cry the atmosphere is so electric and pulls on your heart strings, lm sure l was Scottish in a past life😂 you should definitely go you’ll love it, Edinburgh is an awesome place to be when it’s the festival lots to see and do. The castle is wonderful inside and houses the Scottish Crown Jewels. You can get headphones which will talk you through the history of the castle. I love love love. I enjoy watching your reactions to our culture and traditions get your passport out and come visit!!!

I thought you would really enjoy this event. I seem to recall that the diamond formation part way through was in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, as this video is from the 2012 performance. My Dad was from Edinburgh, and we went to the Edinburgh Tattoo whilst on a touring holiday of Scotland way back in 1965. It rained, but it was still a memorable and enjoyable evening.

The pipes and drums were used to keep the rhythm for marching...... but also, predominantly in the 17th and 18th century to intimidate the enemy, the sound carried for miles across battlefields, it was reputed to be played the night before battle to let the enemy know you were coming for them........ The Highland Bagpipes were until recently classed as a weapon of war. They were part of the Shock and Awe tactics. It’s quite a scary sound if you’ve never heard them before. Pipers played on the Normandy Beaches during the D Day landings of World War II. They marched playing the pipes , in gunfire, to rally the troops as they left the landing craft.

Natasha you definitely get the proper pronunciation of Edinburgh correct but if you really want to pronounce it like us Scots and your ancestors did, it's "EMBRY!" 😆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😆 Watching the pipes and drums live is truly an awe inspiring experience . What is really cool is that as the band march by you in the stands, first you hear mainly the pipes as they are in front, then you hear mainly the drums as they come by, it's AMAZING to see. Despite living only 20 miles away from Edinburgh I have only ever been able to see the Tatoo live once but that once will NEVER leave me, it's a stunning spectacle.

Oh, BTW, the hats the bands wear are called "bonnets", and are of two different types. The low triangular one is called a Glengarry (after a regiment formed in Glen Garry) and the tall black one is called a Feather Bonnet, which is decorated with ostrich feathers, which are interlaced with a lightweight frame to adde height. The coloured thing stuck in the side of the feather bonnet is called a hackle.

Sorry, but you are wrong there about the "tall hats." They are called Bearskins. Little girls wear bonnets. You may be thinking of the Scottish word for a flat cap, "bunnet".

@@paulsmith2516 you are only partly correct. The drummers of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are the only ones wearing bearskins. Pipers DO NOT wear Bearskins. They are wearing Feather Bonnets and others are wearing the Glengarry.

Being 1/2 Scottish and my grands came from Scotland. Than being in Scottish Regiment in Toronto back in 70's and early 80's we had military tattoo in Toronto, even today I still get my chills when I hear pipes and drums music

I have been to the Edinburgh Tattoo, it also coincides with the Edinburgh Festival. The seats are built onto the castle walls. It was a great experience.

When you see these Scottish men moving like that It actually happened in WW2 The German forces had never seen this and were retreating as Crazy Scottish commander walking directly in front of the men. It actually was in part in a WW2 Film.

I was fortunate enough in 1977 while with The Prospect Theatre Company performing at the Edinburgh Festival of which the Tattoo is a part and on a free night I managed to get to see this fabulous display. The Tattoo is on every night during the Festival and there are tons of events around Edinburgh for the Festival proper and the "Fringe." So you certainly have heaps to do and see all day and night! According to the writer Clive Cussler - whose father served in the German army 1914-18 - the French weren't much of a problem, the English were stubborn and the Americans were tough fighters. But the sound of bagpipes meant that they were in real trouble.

As a retired former soldier ( Infantry ) with 30 yrs. Proud Service Going into Battle we had a Piper marching in front playing then pipes. IT STIRS THE BLOOD UP PUTTING THE FEAR OF GOD INTO THE ENEMY. Check out how many Pipers were killed or wounded or survived and were awarded the VC. Remember the Pipers are unarmed, only carrying and playing the pipes. You would be surprised .( more than you think )
