I always thought of the "way too good to be true" ending of Bully to just reflect that Bully, like all other R* games, is inspired by movies. While GTA is mostly inspired by crime movies and RD by westerns, I believe Bully is inspired by teen movies where there is no actual cursing, sexual content and bloody violence and the story follows a teen that goes through some trouble buy ultimately has a happy ending where the bad guys lose, good guys win,whole school sings and dances and everybody lives happily ever after. Though by all you mention, you can clearly see that the original vision for Bully was completely different...

The Bully we got is already a masterpiece but hearing about all of the cut content makes it seem like it would have been a completely different animal. I really hope we get a second Bully game but I feel like if we do it'll be a mess and people will initially like it and then maybe after a few months of having it we'll begin to see the flaws and it'll get run through the mud. I like the '''theory''' of "Help Gary" being genuinely about helping him, although the story between the two characters would be incredibly different I think. Is there any evidence that supports this theory? Gary doesn't seem like he would genuinely open up to someone in a way where he seems vulnerable (he mocks his own problems when he talks about his ADD and parents, and he mainly does it to cynically make fun of the concept of victimhood and the fact that his past shaped his person), especially someone who he sees as a tool rather than a friend. So would that mean they were actually much closer in that version to a point where he gives up his presentation of control and power? That actually hurts my heart a little. Or is that reddit comment just fanfiction? I mean, I get it chief. Anyway, I always wished there was more of a friendship between the two, because in the game we got, so much of Gary's character is cut, like the Halloween pranks being Gary going manic revenge demon all over the school, which would have been just wonderful. Or even the voice clips of Gary asking about Jimmy's mom, which would not only show how Gary fishes for information about his target, but also would have been a wholesome bonding moment for the player that'd make the betrayal and rivalry later cut so much deeper. I don't get it. And apart from story structure reasons, I think humanization and adding more nuance is always great, especially if it's a character that acts in bad ways because of personality disorders.

i really like your theory, man. i agree with some of the points you have and i have a few of my own; outside of help gary and halloween, gary really thought him and jimmy were friends. he stopped taking his meds at probably around halloween and that’s when(what i think) paranoia took hold and he thought jimmy was against him. jimmy never turned against gary, but gary being off his medication thought all of these untrue things. i believe for the first few missions up until halloween gary wanted to be friends with jimmy just as much as jimmy wanted to be friends with gary but him going off of his meds changed everything

My take on Bully is that Jimmy is writing a story in his spare time at school and that the game is a figment of his imagination. His one true friend is Petey and he is the only genuine friend that Jimmy has. Jimmy being a hero is all part of his imagination and I'll explain why. So Jimmy is sent to Bullworth and he already is getting into fights and getting into trouble as soon as he enters the gate. Most of his teachers are very cruel and the kids are even worse. Jimmy tells Gary "I can't keep getting into trouble cause I can't get expelled again". Yet Jimmy does cause nonstop trouble in the game during the missions. He even uses a slingshot to harass the Jocks on a few occasions. In most schools, especially expensive private schools where parents of injured kids can sue the school, a kid caught using a weapon would be expelled and most likely also face criminal charges too. There's a homeless man living on campus and Phillips is even seen talking to him. Why is he allowed to stay there ? Wouldn't that be a liability to the students and teachers where the school could get in big trouble over ? What about Galloway ? Hattrick catches him drinking alcohol and he is drunk. Hattrick goes to get the headmaster in an effort to get Galloway fired and yet why would he need bottles if he were already drunk ? He could just send the headmaster to the English class to see the evidence himself. Don't you also find it weird how Jimmy United the school and how he has a way with women ? All he has to do to get a kiss from a girl is to give them some flowers or smooth talk them. Girls will even fight over him out of jealousy and let's be real here, Jimmy is no Brad Pitt Jr. This all adds up that the game is really just a story that Jimmy writes in his spare time to imagine that he is the hero of the story. Gary is the arch rival cause every hero needs a villain in a good story. Let's also not forget that Jimmy is able to beat up multiple people at once and he even knocks out kids that are trained boxers. Even if they are amateur level, we know that Bif is the boxing champion of that establishment. So yeah, I view all of it as a figment of Jimmy's imagination.

i like your imagination. it’s very observant of how teens think and execute their thoughts and experience when going through so many physical and mental changes. my only counter is that it’s a game unrealistically gloomy to build a world that seems apocalyptic in the way that everyone is horrible, everything is violent, and everyone is no match against jimmy. it’s played up for the appeal. a usual school experience is often mental abuse if anything. there is violence that can happen but it’s not likely anyone would break into a fight over 1 small interaction. rockstar games has gta-something so played up and, in all honesty, stereotypical. how are they to get bully any attention? again, i love your imagination and i do agree, jimmy definitely has some creativity deep down along with the fact he’s an angsty teen that disapproves of his current family situation. of course, executing a way of venting will be out of proportion and black and white. your theory has so many holes that make sense and are easy to overthink, i just don’t think that was a thought to the creators. but seriously, if you were to write a story from jimmy’s perspective doing said writing, i would read it repeatedly

I liked the myth marathon. I guess that most of the stuff is covered over here. Sure, there may be a few loose ends, but they are nowhere near other things Rockstar simply left unexplained. The best example being "Love's Disappearance" from GTA 3. This one single cutscene has got more potential for a theory than almost everything else from GTA 3. The fact that Bully was meant to be much darker is certain, as there are multiple proofs to support it. I bet that 90% of the myths are connected to the darker nature of Bully. Like I wrote down below, I do own the NTSC Bully that was bought on the release day. But as far as I know, and checked with other releases, it really isnt any different, and doesnt have Dr. Crabblesnitch named "Ralph" anywhere, just like in other manuals. The only thing that stands out is the unfitted cover (not centered, resulting with the side label being a bit off), but this was probably because they were in rush to get the games in time to stores. This is probably a fake rumour spread due to someone misreading it, because there would be no reason for Rockstar to correct such a meaningless thing for the game if they indeed named him Ralph.

But I remember buying the game shortly after it came out and don't remember ever seeing him other than in Chapter 1 missions and cutscenes.

Nathan about the ghost girl theory, I've did Christy's errands a lot in Bully and one particular dialogue always stood out to me everytime. Something about ‘fresh blood in the hole’ or whatever. It's kind of amazing how kids with too much time and imagination could just make shit up about a game (UFO on top of the asylum in Bully, Bigfoot in the woods in GTA:SA, etc) and people will spend years trying to prove or disprove them. I mean some people still believe you can find Bigfoot is SA if you're in just the right place at the right time, even though we've all seen the files and know it was never there, all because their little brother or some kid at school swore he saw it. My long time theory is that Bully is loosely based on the relationship between Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt in the movie 12 Monkeys. Jimmy's outfit and overall appearance at the beginning of the game is the same as Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction. In 12 Monkeys a manic guy named Jeffrey(Gary) is the first and only friend James(Jimmy) meets in an insane asylum that is portrayed as hostile. Bullworth is a very hostile place and there is also a literal asylum nearby. The character of Jeffrey pretends to be Jame's friend but turns out to be the leader of the group that James was sent back in time to stop, making him the antagonist of the movie. Kind of like how Gary goes from your first friend to final fight. Jeffrey and Gary's behavior is strikingly similar. They both admit they have issues that are compounded when they go off of their medication, and then say they've been off it for a while. Gary hates his parents for putting him in Bullworth, Jeffrey hates his parents because they put him in the asylum to save face since they're filthy rich. They even have the same small scar above their eyebrow.

It's a shame that we will probably never get a bully 2, rockstar only seems to care about how a game performs on an online sense, Gta makes billions in microtransactions, so we know we'll get a GTA 6 (which probably won't happen until GTA 5 online numbers drop substantially). I heard rumours of ex- rockstar employees discussing that development on bully 2 was in the works in 2010, but was subsequently cancelled. I believe the story was rockstar had no faith that bully 2 would perform well so they cut the project entirely. I just don't think we'll ever get a bully 2 unless Rockstar finds some way to monetise online features, similar to how they tried with RDR2 and subsequent cancellation of any future updates or single-player DLC. It's such a damn shame that's it's more about the money than the passion for the game anymore. I'm sure so many developers at Rockstar would kill to make a bully 2, but the higher-ups just don't have any trust that any game that they can't make multi-billion dollars a year isn't worth making. Damn shame man.
