I first met The National when I heard the song Heavenfaced from the album Trouble Will Find Me on the radio in a coffee shop back in 2013. I still remember that Saturday to Sunday night like it was yesterday. At that time I wasn't doing so well, I was bullied at school for being introverted and instrospective, my mother kept arguing with my father about completely trivial things due to his insecurities, I rarely saw my dear sister because my aunt and my mother didn't get along at all, and we had terrible financial circumstances. When this song came on for some reason I was able to get a little joyful and calm my troubled thoughts. At the time I didn't have internet, so I didn't know that the song belonged to the band. But years after my difficulties were overcome and I had access to spotify a few years ago, I found this song on an Indie music playlist and I'm not going to lie, when I heard Matt Berninger's voice it made me want to cry. Now here I am, years later a fan of the band. Greetings from Portugal💚💚💚❤❤❤

Listening to the two songs previewing the new album, as well as last year's beautiful collaboration with Bon Iver, the band appears to be mining a creative seam as rich as the one they found c.a. "Boxer" and "High Violet". If that's right, thanks in advance to Matt and the boys for a record that will speak to, comfort and move the souls of anyone here. As the post-cold war optimism of the 90's has soured since the century turned, The National have been there for us, the dignity, humanity and intelligence of their work encouraging our better natures. That's some achievement. We should hold on to that and never take them for granted.
