Dr. Drew Lanham is a superb scientist, an honored professor, and perhaps most important of all-- a poet.

This is what happens when a human being not only has a job or some random profession but finds his calling: he integrates fully with his own humanity, nature and culture. Truly a way of living to aspire to!

Dr. Lanthan, Please, where in South Carolina did you grow up? I am from Wadmalaw Island near Charleston. Same thing- I ran around between our house, my grandmother and her sisters; birding, crabbing, fishing, riding with no supervision. Grew up to become a Marine Scientist. Retired now and run around alone in nature as much as I can find. My heart aches for children who will never spend unsupervised time in nature. Thank you for your video.

Aloha from Hawaii where very rare honey creepers still dwell in native forest; the Hawaiian crow is struggling to make it. Sweet little Pueo spend the day on patrol for goodies and The Hawaiian Hawk thrives freely. I enjoy your poem about the little sparrow… they are intrepid! So cute I noticed a ingenious pretty one getting a few seeds of of the twig of grass/ grabbing it and holding the twig down to enjoy the fresh snack. You Sir represent “ True Aloha “

I have been a lazy birder here in the UK for some years, I say lazy because I do not really care what I see I just love being out with my binoculars and being with nature. It is warming to see others also being out and about watching the wonders of our beautiful (mostly) world. Have a great year mate.

Every year here in London,England, I'd sit in my garden especially during late summers and listen to the European Blackbird sing its heart out from a to aerial on a neighbours rooftop. Been sadly quiet this past year without its serenade. And the absence of Swifts screaming high in the summers skies this year, along with the House Martins I'd see by the River Thamesin Barnes, southwest London, fluttering from their muddy nests under roof eaves, has been palpable and Solomn. The saviour is, that I get to see Red Kites almost everyday over my house when once they were persecuted out of local existence

Birds are my joy, wings telling to those who have fallen, fly! I came here to watch the beauty, but I find sadness as well. We allow Monsanto and other corporate entities to kill off our pollinators and insects with toxic pesticides, robbing the dinner plates of so many species. We are not leaving enough habitat, open prairies and wild meadows for food in areas of migration, human consumerism, trinkets more dear than thousands of species of living art. We are aborting rapidly, life on this planet, never considering our own numbers, our own expansion, not all of us, but many, stripping this planet of it’s galaxy of riches. I am so gladden by your heart and your work, it is up to all of us to keep singing for the song of nature, and cry out the carols of species. You and your work be blessed my friend!
