In this episode, we stocked our 4 ponds with grass carp. We went to a nearby town where they were having a fish day. We bought 16 grass carp and we got one for free! We did a lot of walking back and forth, but we got it done!

I am sure what the man you bought the fish from meant was to put the fish, still in the bag, into the bucket with the pond water and let the temperature adjust and then release them into the lake from the bag. Becuase that is the proper way. Also the last set were not eating the grass they were gasping for air lol
@TheNealsHomestead7 жыл бұрын
+Daniel singh - Yes, you're generally right for small fish like in an aquarium, but the guy made it very clear not to do that with these. They were not to be in the bag for more than one hour as they would use up all their oxygen. But that's a good observation, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

@@TheNealsHomestead good to know, I think I will give them some water conditioner in the bucket because once you open the bag the ammonia becomes much more toxic. I'm gonna assume if they respirated enough to use up all the oxygen then they definitely fouled their water up too lol

They will clean it out and get huge. They are like water goats. They ate all the hydrilla in our pond. Now that everything is clean they don't have much to eat. I noticed when I mow the grass they start coming to the bank to eat grass clippings. Now when I mow I cut it so the clippings are blown out towards the pond. I look at mowing now as feeding the fish. Kind of fun watching them when I am done. We got ours from Arkansas also.

I was taught that you leave the fish in the bag either floating on top of the pond or in a bucket of the pond water (still in the bag) unti the temperature equalises and then release them. The fish were not eating the 'moss' in the bucket either they were gasping for air as heat diminishes water oxygen levels. I hope it all worked out though :)

Suggested stocking rates for grass carp are from 10 to 20 per acre. Stock 10 per acre for general maintenance, 15-20 per acre for 1/2 to completely covered ponds. Control is achieved within one year at these stocking levels. At half these levels, control may take up to two years.

This particular species of carp is very good at eating vegetation in ponds and lakes. They apparently require running water in streams to hatch their eggs so in ponds and lakes they are unable to reproduce so you don't get any of the invasive qualities that are the biggest problem with carp.
@Cobizybone4 жыл бұрын
We added 4 (sterile) Amur carp to a 1AC pond (amount recommended to us). Stocked with Blue Gills, Crappie and Channel Cat. Been 3yrs. No problems. Lots of tadpoles, frogs and fingerlings. Seem to be well balanced. One carp was caught last week. Pretty nice size. We tossed him back in. We're in Mississippi and Arkansas Stockers is who we get our stock from. They travel around. You get their schedule, contact and pre-order. He need to stock the pond with fish that will eat that duckweed. Better yet. Net it up and sale it on EBay. LOL

last light outdoorsmen look up the laws on grass carp, it is highly illegal to kill grass carp. You will get a major fine for it. Grass carp aren’t actually invasive species, invasive carp are sliver carp, Asian carp, bighead carp, and black carp. Many people think that carp eat bass eggs but actually the bass eat way more baby carp than carp eat bass eggs. Carp actually help bass population slightly. The bass has another prey.

The Amur grass carp we introduced into our 1AC pond (4) are sold as sterile. That's why they cost so much. 3 yrs, pond stocked channel cat, crappie and blue gills. Frogs, tadpoles and fingerlings throughout the edges. Oh, the occasional White Crane knows where to get a nice meal. Here's a tip. Time your stocking opposite on bird migration. Lesson learned a few years back.
