A 3 is just a 4 on a bad day 4 and 5 are middle of the road. Since most 4, 5 and 6 ratings are middle of the road anyway. A 6 may as well be a 7, depending on the album art

Just a small correction: they aren't "exploring space for a new planet just to die and end up in hell". Venusian 1 is a mission to Venus, in Perihelion the ship gets sucked in by the sun's gravity and burns up. In Venusian 2 a second mission to Venus is sent, they make it, but find it to be hellish and unlivable - as we know Venus to be. Despite being only the second planet from the sun, due to its atmosphere, Venus is consistently the hottest planet in our solar system. And on the surface it appears to be a mountainous, yellow-cloudy-skied, red and brown rock covered hellscape. In my opinion, the last track, Hell, is all about how those who land there evolve into a new form of life, more brutal and inhuman than anything before, filled with hatred reflective of their extremely hostile environment. And as the song ends, I think we see signs foretelling of a war between those on Venus and those on Mars, with the mention of paratroopers but also the cryptic command "Infest the rats' nest" which to me seems like a reference to the rich (the rats) who have destroyed earth and left it, consequence-free, while everyone else suffers. The rat reference also strikes me as we know a superbug reminiscent of the Black Plague struck Earth, crippling its population. Rats are symbols of disease and were largely responsible for the spread of the Black Plague. As the ones responsible for the destruction and deterioration of Earth, the rich who fled to Mars strike me as the very disease-causing rats of this particular, more existential, disease. And the command to infest the rats' nest strikes me as a call to war against those very people. Maybe we'll find out in ITRN part two, whenever that comes!

A fun bit about Superbug is that superbugs aren't just regular diseases like the black death, they're bacteria that, due to overuse of antibiotics, have evolved to near-unkillable levels. There's genuine concern that superbugs will arise if we continue our trends of sterilization and antibiotics in farm animals. The superbug in question may have a direct link to "The Rats," as one potential source of real world super bugs is over medication of livestock, especially in factory farms in places like China. These places are using the strongest antibiotics for their livestock, allowing superbugs to adapt and grow even faster, while the rest of the world wants to hold them as a last line of defense. The Rats in this album may have been directly responsible for not only the ecological destruction of earth, but also the plagues that they so generously left the farmers behind to deal with. Just adding even more reason for the coming revenge at the end of the album.
@parkermccreary29304 жыл бұрын
I interpreted it differently I think that Venusian 1 was a group of travelers going to live on Venus, but when they saw the sun (in Perihelion) they found it so beautiful, and like a cult they just flew right into it. Venusian 2 they (possibly the old people from the Invisible Face/ Gamma Knife videos) land on Venus, but then on Self-Immolate they decide to fly into the sun again (they all go crazy on Venus or some shit), and then in Hell Satan gets the people (again, possible the old dudes from Gamma Knife) to go kill everyone who has destroyed earth; Han-Tyumi, the rich, Balrog/ Lightning Lord, etc.

Okay for real this might be one of the best albums of the 2010s. Since this album was released in 2019 and since quite literally the next year, 2020 a lot of the narratives turn true to some extent it really shows what they are saying is thought out and possible to a certain extent. Its not trying to cover these narratives in bubblegum easy listening music, they make it harsh, brutal and grim. They also made the album pretty short as well so its not 2 hours of dystopian themes and samey thrash music. Its an amazing album for sure, definitely got better as 2020 went on.

Great review, Anthony! Personally, I gave it an 8/10. I thought it was a very fun, punchy record. King Gizzard’s always pushing boundaries. I love how them--as well as their fanbase--are constantly evolving and changing. Like I said in my review, you don’t step into a Gizzard album if you expect consistency. Stepping into one is like stepping into a black void of no expectations, knowing good and well you will be surprised. My love for this record doesn’t come from the fact that I have an affinity for metal only; I love many of their non-metal influenced releases--since they’ve flirted with it before, lol, surely. More so I like how they’re simultaneously injecting their own influence and their own spice, vigor and flavor into the thrash metal sound, while bearing a raw aesthetic that recalls a lot of the 80’s thrash metal bands. Stu sounds straight out of the Hetfield Kill ‘Em All playbook a lot of times! I personally am very excited to see how Gizzard continues to evolve and push into more experimental territory in the future. This album was accessible, yet full of ferocity. Melodic at times, but hectic. Maddening, but measured. A beautiful contradiction I can’t get enough of. The fact they stayed cohesive without losing their flavor, and made a record they’d never even hinted at, shows that they continue to be one of the freshest and most invigorating acts out there, no matter what they’re doing!

This album sounds absolutely amazing on these audiophile level speakers from the 1970s that I've got (paired with an old 70s Pioneer SX650) Horn speakers really help with that I feel. This album feels like it was made for vintage audio gear.

Enjoyed the review. Your explanation of the sound and story concept of the album is great!

Honestly I viewed the entire album as a stoner metal album with thrash segments instead.

I listened to it for the first time recently and got this impression too. Guess I’ll have to listen again to be certain though.

This is one of my favorite Gizz albums by far, probably top four along with Mind Fuzz, Nonagon, and Banana. Strong-8/10 from me as well.

are they re-inventing the wheel? no, of course not. but they celebrate subgenres of rock with each album and it is just what rock needs at this point

I’m very insular in my music tastes. I think I only listen to like 2 bands who still make music. But I watch all your content because I like hearing what you say, there’s clearly a lot of thought and knowledge that go into it. Plus, someone talking about something they’re passionate about is really something I enjoy, in the most wholesome sense. Keep doing what you do, melon. Love it.

It really is a fun album whether or not people think it’s unoriginal. And also it’s definitely one of the better metal albums of the year. I agree that it seemed a song or two short which was sad (but it rounds off at 9 songs which could have been on purpose knowing Gizzard).
