Also, when you move one checker the whole score of your dice, the spaces you van move have to cut in two, so for example, when you roll 3&5, both the points that make 3 and 5 or 5 and 3 have to be clear. You can't just count 8 points in one.
@sabussy2123 жыл бұрын
yeah otherwise you could step on the other players checker
@tgif1207 Жыл бұрын
They have to be okay in either order? Ex. I roll a 5 and 3 and want to move the same checker for total of 8 spaces. If I move it 5 spaces, then 3, I can't because my opponent has a block at 5 spaces. But opponent doesn't have a block at 3 spaces. I can't say I'm moving my checker 3 spaces, then 5?

Correction to your explanation at 3:00 . In international rules the dice can not land on a checker as you've said. But in American competition it is acceptable for a dice to land on a checker as long as it lands flat. In International games you will see that sometimes the checkers will have a groove in them, called a finger dish. This is fine since in international play dice are not allowed to land on a checker. But in American competition where dice are allowed to land on a checker only flat checkers are used.
@tomy69174 жыл бұрын
We were not permitted to use the dice as shown at the 3:00 time mark, as was explained. Both of the dice are to be rolled on your right side of the board, must land flat, must be on the same side of the board, & must not have any dice landing on a checker. Should any of this happens, both dice must be rolled again. When playing with family, the only change we would do was to roll the dice on the side of the board that had the smaller amount pieces so as to avoid having dice landing on pieces.

For the opening roll, if a player's die doesn't land "cleanly" (landed on top of pieces or leaning) only that player re-rolls - you keep what you had "cleanly" rolled. Also, you do not count the Bar while moving your pieces.
@mishagelenava29625 жыл бұрын
I come from a country that plays this game for many centuries and a few rules are different for us. First of all we don't use these shakers, we roll with our hands. Also, we have only one set of dice and players take turns with them. And first roll does decide who starts, but we don't make move with that first numbers, the winner of the first roll, picks up the dice and rolls again for the first move. Also, our bords don't have the side part, with place for all the checkers. And we call the game Nard(Persian name).

@DryPsylocibin4 жыл бұрын
Excellent explanation, but an important note that may not be entirely clear from the video... If you decide to move only one checker, you MUST be able to do so as two separate moves. So if I roll a 2 and a 3 on my dice and I want to use this to move one checker I can't just make it leap 5 spaces. It must be able to move 3 and then 2 spaces, or 2 and then 3 spaces. If there's two or more checkers of my opponent at those spaces in the middle I can't make the move. Each die counts as a separate move.
@soulbrosampson3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Most of the tutorials are very inadequate.
@agerray4 жыл бұрын
A small but important point: when you throw the dice, you shouldn't just "put them down on the board" - you're supposed to throw the dice so that they hit the side of the board and 'tumble', basically to avoid any accusations of 'manipulating' the dice.

Hi there, I just love your videos on how to play Backgammon. My husband & I have been promising ourselves we would learn for years now and have finally taken the plunge and have found your tutorials to be extremely helpful, However, I do have a question for you. When we were playing Backgammon the other night we were both on the home board (ready for the home run) when I rolled a double six. I used this roll to remove all my checkers off the board but was wondering if this was a valid move or not and if not we would like to know what you would do in this situation if you are possibly able to answer my question. Thanking you in anticipation. Kindest regards, Trish Turner - Australia

At the first casting of the dice, where you decide who's the highesr, both players move the same number on the dice, so in your example it's you 2+1 and oponent also 2+1.

that's not correct, kitty. After that 2 + 1 move was made, the opponent will now shake both of their dice & the game continues

So if I roll a 5 and 4, for a total of 9 spaces, can I move any combination of 9? Say, one check 6 spaces, and another 3? Or are my only options moving one checker 9 spaces, or 5 and 4 (of course, or 4 and 5)? Thanks
@tomy69176 жыл бұрын
you have to move as what the dice show, so, in your example, you would have to use the 5 & 4, but, can be used as 4 & 5 when counting in case you encounter a blocked point

The dice are to be released from their shaker cups "cleanly" and allowed to roll freely and not as shown in this video where the cup is making contact with the board. If both dice do not land flat, both dice must be re-rolled.

What's maximum movement for one checker. When you rolled 7. You moved two checkers and not one.
@tomy69176 жыл бұрын
you can either move one checker 7, or, you can move 2 checkers. For example, you roll a 5 & 2, one checker can go 7, or, you can move a checker 5 and a different checker 2.

Bucky bro you rock, you helped me alot in my uni days, now coming to my question. i have never ever played backgammon, but now im making an android game and trying to understand the flow of the game, so what im saying is this when you said that you cant place your checker on top of other checker or "you cant land your checker on top of other checker, its invalid move"ok seems fine, my question is that if i roll dice and lets say it comes 5 total so can i place my checker on that point where there are already checkers placed but not full(5),meaning can i adjust my checker there?. i hope you got ,my question? please rep asap. im begging for it yo
@tcphll6 жыл бұрын
I'll answer. You have to treat each die as a separate move, and neither move can land on a blocked point. So if you roll a 2 and 3, your checker cannot land on a blocked point for either the 2 or the 3 move even if it's clear at the total of 5.
@gammondog12 жыл бұрын
I was introduced to backgammon thirty years ago by a good player. He told me that when shaking the dice that,"three shakes are good:five are plenty". Meaning that three is the minimum and more than five was unnecessary and potentially annoying to the other player if done to frequently. Also,the dice need to roll on the surface at least a little. You can't just plop the cup down. That cup has to stay in the air as the dice tumble out. I'm sure you well know this.Demonstrations just aren't easy.

you broke rule #5 - you are NOT allowed to hit your dice cup on the board like that. the dice need to TUMBLE out of your dice cup from the air above the board. thats why dice cups have lips on them so they are random and cant be manipulated so that is a bad thing to show you slamming the cup down on the board as that is illegal in tournaments and against ettiquette.
