I love the way Crusoe is such an independent little soul, what a great life he has. The idea for the bamboo sun was fantastic, but the execution, what a team! I really laughed at planting the kiwi plant and now you need three … that means there are other people in the world that equal my gardening prowess. Honestly, when I go the garden centre, the plants cry if I pick them up, they say ‘ it’s been nice knowing you’ they know their fate. Only joking, it looks as though your land is a dream and Maria is a wonderful neighbour to have. See you next week x

Apple trees and seedlings... possible problems... Loved the latest episode, you are making it individual and homely. renovations can come later! I work as a gardener and have fruit trees, etc. I'm a bit worried about your idea of a trench around the trees. Trees are likely to have a network of surface roots as well as deep ones to catch water from short showers and perhaps even dew. Cutting a trench around the trunk risks severing all these important roots. Perhaps you could build a dam around the trees much wider out so the water can soak the trees.. perhaps a couple of metres... or sink something into the soil near the trunk as deep as possible... a pipe perhaps with holes at the base, and pour the water in that. lets it sink in deep. Often new urban trees have such a watering system . Also you've grown some lovely healthy seedlings. You may get better results taking those seedlings and instead of planting direct into the ground, pot them on... put them into individual pots (you can even make pots with newspaper or similar and put them togetehr in the tray... this way the plant gets bigger and stronger with a better network of roots, then you can put them into the garden. Hope that is helpful... xx

This video made me laugh. Loved it when John said "this part of the sun building will probably take 7 hours" HA! Tara's idea for a sun ray privacy screen was brilliant and John made it a reality. It looks GREAT! I'm THRILLED to bits you're using the incredibly durable bamboo. I couldn't see the ground whether it has stones. If not, you could take bigger diameter bamboo, split it and use it for "flooring" so when showering your feet stay clean. Also, when the bamboo shoots come up, you can pull the out, cook and eat them. They are delicious. They are high in proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. I know this post is long and I apologize. I'm just SO excited! I wish I could actually be there helping you discover ALL the wonderful parts of your home. Until next week my friends, much love and best wishes being sent to y'all 🥰

Hello Tara, John and Crusoe‼️. Your show is breath taking and so helpful to me at this very moment. The bamboo sun is beautiful! Jobs well done, just an other bit of “Legend advice”, when you strim around tree bases either have a basin around the tree, or use an old paint tin that’s split and you can put it around the trunk and prevent any change of ring barking the tree which could prove fatal. Once done one tree remove the shield and put it around the next. Keep it Simple and stupid.🙃😂🤣

@@TheNewbys if you need help shout. I am Portuguese and leaving in the uk. So it will be the other way around with our little one. Love your videos. It makes me happy to see that you love my country and it helps with my saudades 😊 If you don’t know, saudade is probably one of the most important word for us. Doesn’t have direct translation to any other language. And it’s a nostalgic feeling of logging and missing, that mixes both sad and good memories of something special. It’s very ingrained in Portuguese culture, for example music: Fado.

It seems that there is a plethora of young families out there trying to conquer off grid life in Portugal! It appears to be the “happening” place! But you guys do not seem to be the dime a dozen couples, and actually have found a place that is in some semblance of repair! I love it! You are easy to watch and I was SO glad you made a whimsy detour and made the sunshine screen instead of opting for major renovation that day! A lot of hard work in the future, but I think you’ll succeed! Love and luck! ❤️

I found an infusion of fennel in boiling water not only made a great tea but was great with mild tummy upsets and after an operation I threw away the yukky stomach protector pills and lived off it. Also watch out for the birds that land on the flowers, Crusoe will love them. They are foraging for the fennel seeds late in Autumn. Don't worry, there are enough to share around and you will have dried fennel seed all winter long. (fantastic in a homemade foccacia with olives). A wonderful video, it's like falling into a warm soapy bath with candles watching you grow into your space.

Tara, I used bamboo as my curtain rods! Then used panels of fabric for curtains! In my daughters room we took it a step further and made fabric strips wrapped around the bamboo to make curtain toppers in rooms where we didn’t want to cover up our views! Bamboo is so versatile!! Hope this idea inspires you!!

Great idea Vickie. We love it!! Thank you friend. We are starting to feel out a whole variety of uses for the bamboo, curtain rods is not one we had thought of, but it’s a really terrific one! Crusoe sends lots of hugs and we all send our thanks for watching. great to have you along for this adventure. 🇵🇹❤️🙏

So very glad to note that you are using the bamboo for building material. It is one of the greatest resources on the Asian continent, not just for building, but also for cooking utensils, as I mentioned before, and as an actual food source. Bamboo shoots are delicious. Fennel bulbs are very tasty shredded into a salad, as well as the leaves. Fennel seeds are one of my faves for medicinal tea and they also enhance things like tomato sauce. Just a little hint in regards to seedlings, if I may: don't plant them out until they have four or more leaves. Love your positive vibes, good people!
