Scotlands North Coast 500 in a Campervan |This years best staycation?!!

The North Coast 500 is the greatest road trip in Scotland, and this week we head off in search of the best stops along its route in our self converted campervan. We are not sure how many places we have included in this video, but its about 30 minutes of epic scenery, big waterfalls, lochs, historical sites and some wonderful hikes, oh and a story about a polar bears skull, cool!

We did Scotland in a motor home in autumn 2019. As a tip to everyone ‘go with a plan’. We didn’t, we ended up driving from South to North, East to West almost every few days. Don’t get me wrong, we had a great holiday, but could have seen/done more if we either followed this route ( or the NC 250 ), or planned our own. I drove 2500 miles ( 40 hours of driving ) in 2 weeks, in hindsight I personally would have limited myself to the west coast ( with the exception of John O’Groats ) for one 2week adventure. Sorry for hijacking your vid, it’s a beautiful place and you made more of your time than we did. Enjoyed this video, very brave with an 8 week old, mine were 2, 4 and 6 when we went, my wife just said she wouldn’t have been brave enough with a newborn so 👏👏👏 to you. Nice van too 👍 We’re doing the perimeter of England in 8 weeks time 🤪🤟🙏🤞🏻 For future, can you tell me where the road is at 14:50, seen it on plenty of programs but don’t know where it is?????

Organisation is key, we did try to film the video as a linear guide so that one stop came directly after the next with out any need to go back, and you’re right that John O groats is a key stop, even if you are only doing west coast, the drive across the top is epic!! This brought back so many memories! I lived in Scotland for 4 years, and one of my novels (The Cardinal, historical fantasy fiction) is set along Loch Eribol; we spent a few weeks around Durness and Loch Eribol, exploring brochs, souterrains & soaking in the atmosphere to distill it down into the language of the characters in my story (spanning ancient pre-Scotland to modern archeological digs). Did you also make it to Ceannabeinne beach? It's an amazing geological gem, with vertical strata - when the glaciers receded, northern Scotland "popped" upward as it was released from the weight of ice... You also mentioned Moine house; its name likely comes from the Moine Thrust Belt, which is the geological tectonic feature of northern Scotland. This vlog made me quite homesick!❤️

Nice video. You really look as though you are having a great time. We are doing Shetland, Orkney and the top corner of 500 on our way back down later in summer. I did the 500+ back in 1984. Great sunset at Achmelvich camping. Got to stand on Dounreay reactor plate and lighthouse keeper allowed us to watch the light come on at the top of Duncansby lighthouse.

How long did it take you to recognise that you could have done with 40 nights not just 4 Kathy to get any sort of a take on the Highlands and North Western Highlands, never mind The Cairngorms or Central Belt? Every year we go, we take longer and longer only to realise that there is even more to see than we had expected. Next year it's Lewis and Harris then Ullapool to Durness. We're allowing 10 days for that.

Hi guys what a great video I was so interested in this especially Apple cross pass as I was there in June 8 I done the apple cross pass I was yes in a higher motorhome it was 7.4 meters long but I had watched KZbin videos on the pass so of we went what a exciting trip up there I had to but it from auto to manual gearbox so it did not run away from me we also done the cost rd on the isle of sky absolutely stunning,well back to you I do follow your blogs but I really love this one Scotland is so beautiful so many views snow still on the mountains just fantastic,,what a beautiful water full as I cannot walk I missed so much only one leg and to rough to take wheelchair,so watching you has show me what I missed thank you so much ,got to say I love you telling me the history in many places till next time take care keep safe,John 👀🥂🌹❤️🌈🌺😂🤹‍♂️

Hope you are all well and having just the most wonderful time , Dave and I had a beautiful time in snowdonia and all round wales but unfortunately my daughter got sepsis and her liver was failing so we rushed home , she is still in hospital but they have finally found the right antibiotics to make her feel better and she will have a operation on Monday to take out her gallbladder which is infected and very in large, Dave and just wanted to say again and I know we have said it before but we love your blogs and always look forward to them coming on take care and gentle hugs to Cruso xx

It was called “Anne Arundel Town” during colonial times but the name turned Greek-like for whatever reason at some point. Anne Arundell was an aristocrat (Lady Baltimore) from Tisbury in Wiltshire. Though she never set foot in her namesake.

Great video guys. We've just got back from the same area. We didn't follow the NC500 route but saw some lovely beaches and mountain scenery on the west coast. We have been using our Defender 110 as a camper van mostly travelling Europe in short bursts when we get time off work. Enjoyed the journey guys, done part of the nc 500 last year but the other way round, from Inverness up to Wick, John O Groats, Dunnett Head, Thurso and Bettyhill then left down an amazing road to Lairg, it is absolutely stunning and true what you said early on you could take months discovering everything the route has to offer. Well done, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Morning Bob, thanks for your message. There is so much left to do for us. One thing we totally forgot about was the UKs largest waterfall, we LOVE a waterfall, maybe one day we do a episode only about waterfalls 😂😂😂. Bettyhill is a name from John’s childhood when his family would take him on school holidays to northern Scotland, great memories. We will have to do the road to Lairg next time (possibly end of the year) What a road trip NC is. Will you be heading back to complete the journey?

Great video. Been there a few times myself in my car. Speaking to the locals a lot of them getting pissed off with people turning up in vans/motor homes clogging up roads and not spending any money in hotels etc. leaving human excrement on the side of the road! Quite understandable really but I guess people are still buying food etc from the local shops? It Was interesting to speak to the locals.

I would certainly agree, folk could (should?) spend many weeks or months exploring Scotland. It’s always been here and it’s almost a shame that this NC500 marketing has funnelled interest into quite a specific area as the infrastructure has perhaps struggled to keep up with the legions of visitors. @@TheNewbys You did, it was the road you described as up and down and left and right. At 18:53 you’d just passed a croft called Oldany on the road. Maybe in large motorhome it’s not a great idea for a road, but in a small one or a car, the road is beautiful. There’s a poem called “A man in Assynt” by Norman MaCaig that describes it’s haunting beauty better than I can.

The timing as unintentional as it was is amazing!! I have been to the Orkney Islands. Spent 3 months there on Stronsay. The NC500 looks super interesting and beautiful. You had quite reasonable weather too. Can I make a suggestion when you edit your vids. When there are lovely natural sounds particularly waterfalls could you cut the music? For the most part you guys have a pleasing choice of accompanying music so thanks for that. Most other YT channel videos I watch I have to turn the volume way down or off because the choice is so awful. So, thanks again for the lovely sight seeing of the world through your eyes.
