Bill seems like such a genuine guy. I'd love to fish with him someday. And Mr. Valk seems a very professional guide. I love the way he treats the fish. All too rare where I come from. All the best to everyone at TNFF.

I've been looking for a good video on swinging flies for steelhead to share with buddies who are interested in the sport and this is the best I've come across. Also thanks for emphasizing the proper handling of the fish

Always love the initial take then the adrenaline jumps . I like playing the fish sideways to use the current to push the fish into shallow water while wading. Great guide

Great Lakes steelhead behave very differently than west coast steelies that migrate to the salt. Wild steelies that come back from the salt actively chase surface and sub-surface flies, no need to sink the fly deep as it appears you must do for Great Lakes steelies. They are the same fish…but certainly do not behave the same way.

Thanks for your feedback. A few years ago a guide from Vermont demonstrated how steelhead in the Salmon River (upstate NY) would come to the surface to hit a riffling hitched wet fly, which amazed us. Another guide on the St. Marys River in Ontario says it also works to bring them up top....but only in specific conditions. We are going there to shoot a show on the 27th of October, will be interesting to see if this will work again. Are there specific west coast steelhead surface flies you would recommend we try? The water we will fish is fairly fast flowing.

@@newflyfisher for faster water a Bomber always works well and riffle hitching a Muddler is also a good choice. Good luck!

It’s the same fish…

No salt no steel? What does that mean? The great lake fish are descendants of fish from the Pacific Northwest. They are genetically the same just different place. No difference. I don't understand what you mean. Please elaborate

that glove will not hurt that fish. that's the least of his worries. perfect catch and release. respect all around to the guys landing it

Yeah, keep the fish in the net and in the water. NVM grab the tailing glove. Be Better! especially when teaching New Fly Fishers.
