Liz Truss and her mates have been selling their version of popular conservatism in central London this morning.
They were delighted to see Lewis at their launch who spoke to Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nigel Farage about both their vision and their seeming hypocrisy.
We ask Sir Charles Walker, of the same party, if he recognizes this brand of conservatism or if they are in fact “useful idiots“ for the right-wing fringe Reform UK party.

The way JRM says "You keep your hands to yourself." during Lewis's interview is really telling. Lewis was clearly just gesturing, but JRM has such a look of disdain and disgust at the thought that he is sharing the same space as somebody he clearly considers to be beneath him.

I'm not right-wing but I think Charles Walker leaving parliament this year is a loss to British Politics. He's right at the threshold of being able to operate in a 'Father of the House' role where he could truly help push out these disgusting voices of the Tories from within. Feels a lot like when Ken Clarke left. Without those voices we're left fighting PopC***s alone.

The idea of Liz Truss leading anything of value is laughable in itself. Even her own father has publically disowned her. It's just another raggle-taggle bunch of failed politicians trying to drag themselves back into relevance. The big threat is when they all get together, but since they couldn't organise their way out of a wet paper bag, it thankfully seems a distant one.

Interesting parallel with Tony Benn. The difference is that Benn was a brilliant and persuasive speaker (and his ideological opponents acknowledged this). This can hardly be said of Truss and her ilk. And this will, hopefully, keep them out on the margins where they belong. What the nation seems to long for right now isn't highfallutin philosophizing and conspiracy theories but rather ministers that can run ministries (and stay in place long enough to push things through) and a Prime Minister who has the measure of the job. PopCon simply isn't offering that and so will likely evaporate (with some of its key players ejected from Parliament). It would be nice to think this represents the death throes of the whole neoconservative movement of the late 1990s, but the UK is not alone in the world, so that remains to be seen.

Poor old Moggo - despite being on GB News he's so biased to his own rhetoric that he doesn't adopt the balanced approach of a true journalist or interviewer. A proper interviewer maintains independence (not left or right wing bias) and offers an alternative to the opinionated-bias of the interviewee. The interviewer generally plays devil's advocate asking awkward and probing questions that challenges the interviewee's policies and views, to ensure that their argument is sound, with well-reasoned critical-thinking, with empirical-evidence and fact-checking, so that the viewer or listener can easily understand the message of the interview.

Seriously this kind of satire/parody really makes me smile. To think some people said Truss was a political opportunist and fraud; morally and intellectually bankrupt and an appalling human being with no self awareness or sense of dignity. Well Truss certainly has shown them with her master class in absurdist comedy. Truss really put a smile on my face. Thanks for all the laughs. Wonderful stuff. It's the same thing with the Tories, time after time, after time. Domestic and international organisations, holding them back from doing all they can for "the little people". Yes, most of the organisations of the size they mention, have become unwieldy and involved in their own internal politics. However, the reason for those organisations being in existence is to try to keep the checks and balances on individual countries and to afford protection to their citizens. Charles Walker spoke well, but even he was disingenuous. Sunak might be working hard, but it's clear, as it is with all of the Tory actions, they're working for their own interests and wealth. When was the last time that ANYTHING in the UK designed to support society actually improved? When was the last time the gap between rich and poor decreased, instead of increasing? My concern is that too many people just hear the soundbites and read headlines or the Daily Mail comments section. Lower and middle income people will vote Tory at the next election, without a doubt. Exactly like turkeys voting for Christmas. The question is, just how many will vote for them? Who really knows what Labour will do 🤷‍♂ but surely there's enough evidence out the of what the Tories have done, and the extreme path they're willing to travel.
