Of course Midori is a shred demon and Miyako has melodic riffs, but the two complement each other. You know, the yin and yang, hard and soft! They will never sound the same if one of them left. That’s what make them unique and awesome, I believe!!

Miyako and Midori, different guitar playing style but both are amazing and they complement each other.
@christopherlidster39183 жыл бұрын
No fear, they are two different guitarists. While Miyako can shred she is a master at melodic solo’s. Midori is unquestionably a Queen at shredding, she is fast, precise, and very technical. It’s difficult to compare the two. Miyako’s solo’s reminds me of early Kirk Hammett solo’s. Midori reminds me of Herman Li solo’s.

Honestly, while my favorite is Miyako, I can't agree that Midori is not as good. They are just different, and that's one of the reasons this band sounds so phenomenal. I can't think of any band that had such a pairing. Now, imagine doing that for almost two hours. In high heels. With a smile. They call this metal, but these women are made of some kind of high-tech carbon steel. It's pretty crazy.

Sorry to disagree with pops but you can’t have one without the other, Midori and Miyako are a package deal. Miyako herself has said in interviews that she wants herself and Midori to be known as the best dual guitarists in metal today and she is right…they are. And as for this song it’s the opening song for a LOVEBITES (only) concert they performed at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo (just before the C-19 problem hit the world) it consists of a 19 song setlist and is available on DVD and bluray titled “Five of a Kind : live in Tokyo”

I have gone back and forth trying to decide which guitarist I think is better or who I like better, and as soon as I make up my mind that it is one or the other I will hear another song and go back to the other one. So the bottom line is, they are both equally as talented but in different ways. Their styles are different and they compliment each other perfectly. They will soon be a legendary pairing in the rock world, if they aren't already.

Ah, the Midori/Miyako debate. As a guitarist, I say Midori (blonde ponytail) has better technique. She's a graduate of Guitar Institute of Technology (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert), so guitar is her main instrument (though it's been said she has early piano training). She rotates her hand perpendicular to the fretboard for shredding to give her greater reach. Her fingers stay very close to the fretboard at all times, increasing her speed and accuracy. Even Miyako admits Midori is faster. Miyako is a classically trained concert pianist, so guitar is her 2nd instrument. It's been said she taught herself to play guitar. Her fingerings are a bit unorthodox, and her technique is not quite as "clean". But she plays with more feel and creativity. Her solo in "Break the Wall", one of her slowest solos, gives me chills every time I hear it (all in the phrasing). She has a tendency to approach the fretboard at more of an angle to give her more strength for deep bends. Note: If you react to "Break the Wall", do the Five of a Kind Zepp DiverCity show (same as this one). She chooses her Gibson Les Paul '59 Reissue which has the thick, fat tone. On the earlier "Daughters of the Dawn" performance she uses her Dean ML. It's a more "aggressive" sounding guitar, but the sound of the Les Paul is way better suited for that solo. Noting your observation, keep in mind Midori is the classic metal guitar "showboater". She does the deep stances, and those pained facial expressions are all show. Then she'll look up the crowd and smile while still ripping at light speed. Miyako has that classical stoicism and focus. But you're right. It does come off as "cockiness", which is fine as she can certainly back it up. But one thing we can all agree on, the ladies complement each other extremely well! Again, enjoyed the reaction, guys. Looking forward to the next one!

Good observation! I knew Midori started learning guitar at 20 and was able to master her skills like that! She must have been very determined and talented!
@dregeye3 жыл бұрын
@Ron Foster, excellent comment, although, personally I find Miyako's "feel" is more aligned with very familiar blues/rock techniques and phrasing, integrated with classical influences, and tapping as alternative technique/effect, while Midori's expressive phrasing is uniquely emotional, non-traditional and more creative. Miyako's solos sound more traditional with identifiable inspirations, while Midori brings the unexpected, the unfamiliar with a more "speaking" voice. Unsurpassed contrasting stylists who are a team and 'unite' in the many harmony-duets that grace nearly every song, and palm-muted rhythm trade-offs with power-chords. We are fortunate to have both, and that they are NOT the same in style, techniques and inspirations. Your suggestion of "Break The Wall" vividly demonstrates what I am describing, imo.
@garykeeling22753 жыл бұрын
They have spoken in interviews a little about their contrasting personalities on stage - Midori with the classic power stances, open and engaging facial expressions, versus Miyako's more "cool" and stoic personality. It is deliberate, to a large degree, in order to establish even more contrast between them, so that the crowd can experience them more as a yin/yang dichotomy, rather than being indistinct from each other (because that is boring, and there are far too many bands where the band doesn't care enough about making the fans care about which guitarist is which). Miyako was always somewhat more reserved than Midori, but not nearly to the degree they portray on stage now. In older shows, prior to adopting that stoic stage personality, Miyako was much more similar to Midori with the moving around, the head-banging, the smiling, engaging with the crowd, and all of it. She still moves around, and lets the occasional grin slip out, but not as much as before. But it was something they sat down and discussed and decided to do intentionally, not so much a quirk of her real personality.
@snakewhisperer13 жыл бұрын
Interesting you mention that, Gary. I do have the Battle in the East DVD, and as I think about it, Miyako was more animated in that show. Drageye, I enjoyed reading your perspective. But it stands to reason. They meet, just the two of them, regularly at each others (from what I understand, most often Miyako's) to practice the harmony riffs they're known for pulling off so flawlessly. I could see them "scheming" stage personas as well. That's cool! They're stylistically different, so projecting a different demeanor just makes the show that much more interesting.

Seriously, I don't really think there is anything between them. On the odd song, you hear Midori play soulful stuff. But that isn't generally her style. But when she does you really can feel her pouring emotions into it. I'd think if you got them both to swap places and closed your eyes, you'd be pushed to hear a difference. Miyako gets a huge amount of credit for her solos. But they are very soulful and melodic. (I love them), whereas Midori has a pretty quick solo that is very technical. One of the things I do love though, is the little fills they do on transitions. You will see Midori doing a lot of these, just kind of hidden away. Also when you look at them, both are feeling the music, Miyako goes inside herself when she's soloing, Midori expresses outside to the crowd more. But if you watch carefully, you can see they are both enjoying the music themselves. I just wish Miho would get a little more time to show off, she's the backbone with Haruna, but she plays so that it blends in with the drums. It would be nice to hear her shine on her own a little more. Same as Haruna should get the odd little fill on her own in concerts.

"One of the things I do love though, is the little fills they do on transitions. You will see Midori doing a lot of these, just kind of hidden away." And Midori's 'emotional-shred' accompaniment 'under' chorale segments like in "Swan Song" and "Don't Bite The Dust" and, as you mention, the transitions, as between verses in Holy War (2,03-2,08) amazing! These are things many don't hear without repeat listening.

is the opening of a 19 track concert. This one puts you in the mood right away. A kind of preparation for what's to come. Because when you leave this concert, you have no brain left, so much you were crushed musically. The hats are worn only on this first track, just to warm up. Then it's the surge of titles that will destroy you little by little throughout the show.

I always find myself comparing Miyako and Midori to Adrian Smith and Dave Murray of Iron Maiden. Adrian Smith is the technical solo player and Dave Murray is the Speed Demon and melodic solo player. In my personal opinion Miyako (Black hair) plays the technical, melodic solos and Midori (Blonde hair) is the Speed Demon soloist. That's not taking anything away from either one. Each member of LoveBites is on a whole different level all their own. They all have mastered their craft. I love both guitarists but I love Midori's energy that she brings to the stage. You can always count on seeing Midori and Miho to be headbanging together during the song. Midori and Miyako feed off each other and they sound great together.
@garykeeling22753 жыл бұрын
It is impossible to say that one guitarist is *better* than the other. They play different styles. Midori (blonde) came up as a classical guitarist, and played classical guitar for many years before making the switch to metal. Miyako (dark hair) has only been playing the guitar for around thirteen years, and favors more bluesy and experimental styles. So Midori has been playing the guitar for a lot longer, but Miyako is something of a musical prodigy, playing several different instruments at a high level. From a purely technical standpoint, Midori is the better of the two. If you pay close attention to their fingers on both hands, you'll see that Midori usually goes for wider and more difficult note placements, and she uses extreme conservation of motion with her picking hand, which gives her more control, speed, and precision. By contrast, Miyako uses wider picking motions, so there is a lot more air between the upstrokes and downstrokes, meaning it is going to require more energy and effort for her to play as fast as Midori does ... but she comes close! Also, her note placements tend to be closer together, so she doesn't have to spread her fingers as wide on the fretboard, and her lines are a bit simpler when she is in shred mode. On the other hand, Miyako is a more emotional and intuitive player than Midori, in terms of musical expression (Midori has more engaging stage presence and expressions, but Miyako has more emotive playing). Midori is at her best when she's playing neo-classical lines, while Miyako is sheer perfection when she's in her more bluesy mode! Both are equal to each other, in my opinion, and both are among the very best at what they individually do, and it is a perfect coupling of differently-styled guitarists!

Hey 'Father', actually the guitarist on the right (Miyako) is the lead guitar. The other one (blond? is Midori) the best shots are when they are both playing the same piece, at the same time. The Bassist (Miho) and the Drummer (Haruna, aka Energizer Bunny) are the co-founders and Asami takes on the vocals. Miyako is the lead keyboardist and Asami fills in when Miyako is needed for guitar. Asami is the one that suggested they sing in English, (not that it's always understandable). As a band, they are super tight and amazing performers. Miyako seems to be more serious or even cold; but her passion shows in the way she plays. Thanks for the reaction, Nobodies.... suggestion for consideration, minimize/shrink yourselves and enlarge the band you are reacting to.
