Welcome to the edge of the Sabaton rabbit hole! With the exception of their very first album, every song Sabaton has made is about a specific event, person, unit, or development in the history of warfare - this song is specifically about an incident in 1916 when avalanches buried hundreds of soldiers fighting in the mountains of northern Italy, and the majority of the bodies were never recovered.

This Song is about the happenings of "White Friday". according to their song biography, it's about the wednesday before but overall it should be the whole week or 10days around it, historically shortened to "White Friday". it's where in the battle were abnormally many lawines, most like from explosions, bombs, artillery etc. they buried countless solders in bases, on the move, on guards posts etc, which can never be retrieved. since the ice is slowly melting now, they can start to retrieve them, but it wasn't possible for like a century before.

the Song is based on a certain event. Anyway, all their songs are based on real events or persons;) enjoy White Friday occurred during the Italian Front of World War I when an avalanche struck an Austrian barracks on Mount Marmolada, killing 270 soldiers. Other avalanches the same day struck Italian and other Austrian positions, killing hundreds. According to some reports both sides deliberately fired shells into the weakened snowpacks in an attempt to bury the other side. The White Friday avalanches killed from 9,000 to 10,000 soldiers on both sides. The date 13 December, marked Saint Lucia, a commemorative religious holiday practiced by the majority of Italian Catholics. Though the occurrence of avalanches in the Dolomites Mountains took place on a Wednesday in 1916, the term 'White Friday' was used to coin the disastrous day.

And a bit of history to this one, White Friday actually happened on a wednesday 1916 when a series of avalanches struck the Austro Hungarian and Italian fronts killing roughly 270 soldiers. According to some sources both sides fired shells into the losened snowpacks to try and start more avalanches to bury the enemy soldiers. Some numbers point to as many as 10.000 soldiers and civilans were killed in follow avalanches. Many wich are still frozen in time on Mount Marmolada or "Bloodmountain".

In one interview, Joakim mentioned that they are heavy metal, that power metal to him means dragons, beer, and looking for women. But in another interview, Chris Rörland, the guitarist who plays the solo in this song, also asked, why label bands or music? Listening to and enjoying the music is the best.

Sabaton is a hard rock band that turns music into real events in various wars throughout history. Several here on youtube who react to Sabaton's songs say that they are learning history at the same time. Sabaton also has Sabaton History here on KZbin. Where you take up the real stories that are the background to Sabaton's songs. Sabaton has the help of real historians who bring out all the facts about various events. so everything they sing about has really happened and is not a fabrication.

It happens to almost everybody that actually listen to the lyrics on some of these songs. As several people have suggested, try En Livstid i Krig Live and put on the cc (It's in swedish). im pretty sure the genre is power metal, im not entirely sure tho because the song is quite a lot slower than most power metal songs. however the singer has said that sabaton cant be described simply as a power metal band because of all the different sounds they have in different songs but to me it feels like they usually lean towards a mix of power metal and heavy metal.

A lot of their songs are about of historical events. The song is about White Friday which occurred during the Italian Front of World War I, when an avalanche struck Austro-Hungarian barracks on Mount Marmolada, killing 270 soldiers. Other avalanches the same day struck Italian and other Austro-Hungarian positions, killing hundreds. According to some reports both sides deliberately fired shells into the weakened snowpacks in an attempt to bury the other side. An accurate estimation of the number of casualties from the White Friday avalanches is not available. Historical documents suggest at least 2,000 victims among the soldiers and a few dozens among civilians. Casualties could have been as high as 10,000 men. The date 13 December, marked Saint Lucia, a commemorative religious holiday practiced by the majority of Italian Catholics. Though the occurrence of avalanches in the Dolomites Mountains took place on a Wednesday in 1916, the term "White Friday" was used to coin the disastrous day. So yeah soldiers where killed by a combination of freezing temperatures and avalanches . The bodies remain on the mountain to this day because it's to dangerous to attempt retrieval of the bodies. This is the real history of the Stairway to Heaven. So those men literally froze to death fighting over a mountain.

If you had those thoughts about this song, I'm certain you will love Sabaton. But to do this properly I think a good starter pack of Sabaton is the way to go. :) So I will suggest 3 songs/performances/videos to showcase their things. After that, you are good to go in any direction you want. They are not necessarily their best songs, but they will show you the complete picture. And obviously they are great anyway. :) 1. No bullets fly, the animated story video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqTPgGBpfMyYpLs Since pretty much all their songs have a historic background, the animated story videos are great to get the context, and No bullets fly is something extra for sure. It's about an act of the greatest humanity in pretty much the worst possible time for humanity. 2. Bismarck. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYe6dpVjdtlrr8U One of the most visually impressive music videos ever made. And that is not an exaggeration. :) And a really great song on top of that. It's about the hunt for and sinking of the german battleship Bismarck in WW2. 3. En livstid i krig, Live from the Great tour in Gothenburg. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXPWZHpnhdusnK8 It's in Swedish so turn on the captions and be prepared to be amazed. There will be smiles from ear to ear mixed with tears and you get to experience what might be the greatest live performance ever. It's the story about a Swedish soldier going into war, the 30 years war that ravaged Europe during the 17:th century. And if you want to delve deeper into their songs, their other channel, Sabaton history, kzbin.info/door/aG4CBbZih6nLzD08bTBGfw ,where they go into detail about the story behind each of their songs, is a great source of some light history combined with heavy metal. :) Every song they have made have a corresponding video of about 15 minutes where a historian and great storyteller speaks about the history and at the end, he and the band talks a bit about the song itself. It's really great entertainment. As I said, that is a small package to get you hooked, they have tons of great songs besides those. From the new album they just released I really like "Christmas truce", amazing song, amazing story and an even better music video.. Also "Unkillable soldier", really fun song with a fun video telling the story of a really weird guy. :)

If you ever react to the song "Primo Victoria", don't do the official video from a couple years ago. Use the older video. (The recent official one was an experimental style, and the background sound is too loud). It's about D-Day, and your statement that war is hell on earth matches the lyrics. "Aiming for heaven while serving in hell."

no soldier was "there" for fun... have a look at "to hell and back" official video...its the story of the movie Star Audie Murphy, highest decorated US Solider of WWII , wearer of the MOH, and suffering from PTSD
@merryrose6788 Жыл бұрын
Audie "brought" me to Sabaton. I'd watched him play Billy the Kid in the film Kid from Texas, wondered who Audie Murphy was, then was completely blown away by his accomplishments after I read about him, and his shining the light on PTSD, which had typically been hidden and not talked about. I ordered his book, To Hell and Back, which certainly brings the horrors of war to the reader. One online article about Audie mentioned that a Swedish heavy metal band had referenced Audie's poem, "The Crosses Grow at Anzio," which was included in his autobiography To Hell and Back. Audie's son, Terry, approved of the way Sabaton honored his dad. So, I searched KZbin, saw the lyric video and also a live performance video from Europe, with thousands of people singing Audie's poem to the music. I thought, I want to see this song performed live. So I went to a Sabaton concert, and have never been the same. So glad that this band's music is in our lives! More Europeans seem to know about Audie than Americans, and hopefully, this song will change that.
