@ I kinda agree! The Scoobies were iconic, of course, but Angel Investigations just felt more like a family to me. They were more mature and were going through darker and more intriguing storylines, imo, and I’m someone who’s drawn to such types of stories because they’re always more complex and interesting, and there was a always bigger threat looming ahead for Angel and his group, which is basically Wolfram & Hart. And when I watched the show for the first time ever, I was hooked on the lore and their concept, whereas with Buffy, it was the same thing every time, slaying vampires and just dealing with the usual stuff. The stakes were much higher in Angel than they ever were in Buffy because LA was a larger city, and it fleshed out and expanded the Buffyverse in a way that was way beyond the sheltered community of Sunnydale, and it even added more depth to the characters we knew from before from the original show, like Cordelia, Angel, and Wesley! Even Faith later on when she comes back and has her redemption arc. Angel was a show about second chances, and we got to see a lot of that with its characters. Even Darla’s character when she shows up. I love it so much! I always think of Lilah’s quote in season 4 that goes like this: “Funny thing about black and white. You mix it together and you get grey. And it doesn't matter how much white you try and put back in, you're never gonna get anything but grey.” So as someone who loves morally grey characters, I think the show Angel delves into this idea perfectly because not a single character is good or evil. They all just follow their own ambitions. (Also, speaking of Lilah, she’s definitely one of my favorite characters 🥰)

To quote Angel in this episode "Not to go all schoolyard on you but you hit me first" I liked that this episode keeps showing how much different Angel the series is from BTVS. People rage when Angel hits Buffy, and the show validates it with Buffy’s “how could you?” expression afterwards. But as correctly pointed out here, she hit him _first._ And not only that, she immediately went for a second punch. Few people seem to call this out. Equal rights, equal fights.

This was a good episode showing that Angel was an expanded universe and putting Buffy behind them. Buffy is the center of the universe basically on her show, the chosen most important person. It worked for a while, but quickly limited things and never really made sense. In Angel he is a champion. But just one part of the vast complex world, one small but important cog. Buffy came out thinking she was that most important person, but she and the viewer get to see she isn't. She is an important cog, but one of countless other cogs all as important and not more than others. Outside of Sunnydale she isn't important or special. Buffy the show is about one single person who is magically the most special person the planet. Angel the show is the universe fleshed out, where that isn't true.

1x19 I love that Faith is getting the help she couldn't in Sunnydale. Buffy's arrival kind of proves that. Faith gets closure on the roof by telling Buffy things Buffy was ignoring from the moment Faith arrived in Sunnydale, but I don't believe closure could have happened in Sunnydale with Buffy and the Scoobies around, even as early as _Faith, Hope and Trick._ On the roof in this episode, Buffy attempts to cut off what she doesn't wish to hear from Faith because she's being genuine in her apology and feeling remorseful, while Buffy wants vengeance. It's too early in the forgiveness from Buffy process for Buffy to be there and/or do anything helpful. Buffy even admits outright vengeance was her goal ("I have a right to it"), despite trying to tell Angel there were other reasons for her being there. In _I Will Remember You,_ Buffy made the rule of Angel and her staying away from each other. Now, realizing she cannot win over Angel's arguments, she throws Riley in Angel's face. Oddly, it becomes a good thing Faith slipped up and told Angel about Buffy and Riley earlier, otherwise Buffy's low blow to Angel could have hit Angel harder. Buffy, in this episode is the equivalent to the Scoobies in _Dead Man's Party._ The points Buffy brings up don't matter because it's not Sunnydale and she entered Angel's territory against her own rules, to get vengeance, not because Angel was in trouble, as she tried to state. Whereas, Angel is trying to help Faith for the first time it may actually be a real possibility, and Buffy's arrival nearly put helping Faith in jeopardy, just as Wesley did by contacting the council in BtVS S3. 1x20 I was very curious about The Normies reaction to "Were you excpecting somebody else?"

I think Warzone is a pivotal episode as we are introduced to Gunn. We see Gunn as the ultimate streetfighter, even prepared to kill his own sister after she has been turned. Interesting that Angel calls himself Angelus in this episode making him even more badass. A really good stand alone episode with the introduction of Charles the highlight.
@Samaelthekind
@Samaelthekind 19 күн бұрын
This was one of S1s best scenarios. Faith is profoundly damaged...hyper-violent...basically a super weapon that can go off anytime anywhere...at anyone. Angel 'gets it'. Ensouled but with all the hunger that vamps have, only restrained by conscience. After spending a lot of time darkness and pulling out of it because he wanted to, the narrative of Faith being split between abusing power and self restraint is something he can see eye to eye. In the Buffyverse, Buffy IS the boss, even when she acts as a team player, its with the confidence that she HAS OPTIONS and can pull rank, exercise her power, and get her way...if she thinks its necessary. The character has good judgement...most of the time...and is always aiming for that greater good...but inter-show crossovers were hard to arrange with differing networks...so the Buffy/Angel meta-relationship was kept tense and awkward. You were absolutely right...they used the episode to show the difference between their missions and the difference in theme of the two shows. The arc of Buffy is usually saving the world itself...Slayer turf all the way. Angel is somewhat more about individual people being rescued or redeemed...while Angel works out his own issues and finds his own humanity and redemption.

I have never understood this. Buffy used her slayer powers to kill Ted and she didn't know he was a robot. @@ElderNerwalI feel like the difference between Buffy and faith is Buffy never went all crazy after she “killed” Ted. She went to the police and did what faith should’ve done in the beginning…luckily it wasn’t real but we got to see how Buffy would be in that situation. I think Buffy is justified in her emotions bc nobody can tell you not to be mad at a person that at every turn tries to ruin your life but I can also sympathize with faith because it’s not easy doing all that and coming back from it. Faith was the problem as much as I love her and you can’t blame Buffy for being mad and wanting to rid her from her life bc in her eyes the only way to do so was to kill her

I've never heard so much Faith hate!! Wow!! In a show all about redemption, you can't give up on . . . well, almost anyone, but you shouldn't condemn Faith. She did take herself to the police, it's a start. For the 2nd story, the point of the b story is showing how much Cordelia has changed. At the start of this season she would have probably gone with the money. Now she can think about it, but she's grown to be less materialistic.

This is the same group that said Angel is irredeemable after Angelus killed Jenny, They don't seem to care for redemption, yes Faith went evil & has a soul but she's still a teenager, had a bad life, & has superhuman strength/power, good people can turn bad look at Walter White. They also don't understand that yes Angel has a soul but Angelus(the Demon) is still in Angel trapped & all those dark feelings are still there but Angel's soul is preventing Angel from succumbing to them.

You haven't seen other reactors like SoraMiyano then. The thing is, it's a crossover episode. Faith's story started on Buffy's show where not giving up on someone can lead to tragic consequences (Ms. Calendar). Viewers who watch both shows can get caught up between the two different perspectives. The hate would be much worse if Wesley died.

Sanctuary, and the preceding episode Five By Five, were two brilliant back to back episodes. Buffy coming back into the show again was a major surprise at the time, and Faith letting slip that she had had sex with Riley, who unbeknown to Angel was a major shock finding out that Buffy now had a new lover, you can see how hurt he is. Standout moment was actually Wesley's dart shot with the syringe. Along with the previous episode Five By Five, Sanctuary was one the best episodes of the entire show. The Faith Centric episodes are really what many fans think Angel took off as a spectacular show. When Buffy appears you can see her pure anger at not just Faith, but Angel too. It is understandable how Wesley and Cordelia would feel towards Faith considering her behaviour. However, Buffy knows at the end that she has to save Faith from the Council Hit Squad. Wesley as well changes here and shows his worth in how clever and brave he is as well. It's such a bitter farewell here between Angel and Buffy in the police station, but Faith knows she has to atone for her sins by giving herself up, knowing deep down that Angel is possibly the only person to help her, as he has been through similar torment. A great episode indeed. These two back to back episodes are as good as anything from BTVS. Great X-Files reference again with Detective accusing Kate of being Scully, it was Scully of course who was the sceptic and Mulder the believer.

So on the Angel hitting Buffy back point, it’s very contentious in the fandom. However, I’ve always read Buffy’s face after Angel hits her back as it’s not about him hitting her back, it’s why he hit her back. He does it to protect Faith, to choose Faith’s feelings over Buffy’s, Buffy feels absolutely betrayed. Buffy hasn’t seen how dark it’s got for Faith aside from feeling her rage when their bodies switched back, and Faith has tried to kill Angel before and recently Buffy again, so when Angel chooses her, Buffy is in absolute shock, to her it’s betrayal This is reinforced by her lines ‘everything you could take from me you took’ to Faith, and when she says to Angel at the end ‘Faith wins again’, Buffy feels like now Faith has taken Angel from her too
