"If the ocean is so smart why didn't it just take the heart back to Te Fiti itself?" So many people don't realize the connotation to little Moana and the turtle here. It's the whole reason the ocean chose Moana. Because Moana could have EASILY picked the turtle up and carried it to the ocean. Instead? Moana let the turtle do it itself. She shooed away enemies and gave it a nudge, but she didn't do everything herself; she let the turtle make the journey on it's own. The ocean is doing the same for Moana.

I think that the ocean also wanted the people of Motunui to start sailing again (as Maui suggests after training with Moana to master his Hook) and that's definitely connected with Moana's mission being a success, that's why the ocean didn't interfere excessively

@@drudle this is such a great answer bc you’re so right, returning the heart wasn’t the only task, it was also about changing the people to restore their connection to the ocean, only moana could do that bc it’s in her character to support and nurture

Oh yeah they definitely had to PGfy Mauis stories since some of them aren’t for kids like the lyrics for your welcome ‘oh also I lasso the sun, your welcome to stretch your days and bring you fun’ which is half right to the myth but he didn’t lasso it like he’s saying he just waited for the sun to wake up and him and his brothers just jumped the sun while it was waking up and just crippled the sun, that’s the Māori myth of why the sun moves slow now

Pasifika legends are not fairytales..they were/are mnemonic devices used to preserve indigenous cultural knowledge, as there was no written word until the arrival of Europeans . Source - I took a Pacific Archaeology paper in uni. I am in no way an expert but have access to so much research and still keep up with literature even though it isn’t my expertise. It truly is amazing what work has been done and is still being done to uncover our Pasifika history.

The entire cast was of Polynesian descent with the exception of Alan Tudyk, who played the chicken (and the villager who suggested eating the chicken). The reason people call the big island of Hawaii just "the big island" is because the name of the island is Hawaii. The island of Maui isn't named directly for the demigod Maui, it's actually named after the son of the Polynesian chief that landed there, but said son was named after the demigod, so it's indirectly related.

The realization in the big reprise being "The call wasn't out there at all, it's inside me" is an amazing way to end an arc about self discovery Also, I assume you know by now if you didn't already, but as well as accurately representing a lot of Polynesian mythology, it also hints at one of the biggest historical mysteries about Polynesian culture. They were voyagers and spread from island to island, but then stopped for about 1000 years. Then went back to exploring and no one really knows why they paused for dozens of generations then started up again. So in this movie, it was because of Te Fiti losing her heart and the ocean becoming dangerous

It's wild to think that if the "Long Pause" hadn't ended, Hawaii and New Zealand would never have been colonized. There would never be moai raised on Easter Island. I suppose the upside of no humans on Aoteroa is that the moa and Haast's eagle would be around longer? 🦅

*I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. makes sense, really, because Lin has the same kind of voice limitations himself and admits to that (it's the whole reason, he says, that he wrote "In The Heights" and "Hamilton," because he didn't have the kind of voice needed for the two or three Latin roles in well-known Broadway shows).

Auli'i Cravalho was only 14 when she got cast - what an amazing voice and acting for such a young person! She attended an all-Hawaiian' private school in Honolulu and wasn't going to audition initially... Nicole Scherzinger was the voice of Moana's mom, and she is also from Hawai'i. and the Rock - while he wasn't born in Hawai'i, his mom was. he did go to four years of public schools on O'ahu before he left during high school... All of Hawai'i is so proud of Auli'i... oh yeah - in Moana 2, Moana's little sister is from Kane'ohe, O'ahu....

the conflict here is primarily Man vs Nature, Moana has difficulty with the seas, and sailing it, the threat of this dark sickness spreading through nature. minor conflicts are man vs god, and man vs self (maui) what you're referring to is Man vs Society, where its against social institutions like bullying and slavery etc.

@thenormies, 51:13 Disney Plus has a featurette (or had one) talking about Pacific Islander culture and how they came up with the concept. This isn't a Hawaiian, Samoan, or Maori story, but their Polynesian ancestors' story--they were all the same people. Many of us removed from their culture and history so are unaware of similarities and cognates; they exist for a reason. I thought it was great that Disney reached out to Dawayne Johnson (Samoan), Auli'I Cravalho (Hawaiian), Temuera Morrison (New Zealander), Jemaine Clement (New Zealander) and many others. Anyway, awesome review. I can't wait to see the second movie myself and your reaction to that one too. Take care =) Anyway, you should react to it, I found it an enjoyable learning experience.

In many variations of Maui's origin story his parents weren't portrayed as selfish or cruel. He was born very sickly & they thought he was certain to die, so why make him suffer? They also had other kids to feed & so wasting resources on a doomed baby was not wise. They threw him in the sea to put him out of his misery, but he didn't understand that, & after the sea saved him & the gods made him a demigod he went back home trying to win their love specifically & the love of humans in general with his deeds.

Mythology is correct to use and not offensive at all as it’s meant to describe religious and cultural traditions. Anyone who finds that to be a problem is overly sensitive, you can’t help how people feel personally, but alternatively you can use lore to describe it. It’s not history because a lot of it is based on religious beliefs and not necessarily historically accurate events. Regardless, the term myth or mythology doesn’t exclusively mean that something is make believe but simply that there is nothing tangible to prove that it existed other than belief. That’s what makes it a myth. I can’t believe we’re at a point in time where people get upset over vocabulary and semantics.

How have they not seen Moana? They’re only uploading so they can upload a video for the sequel.

This is by far my favorite modern Disney movie. And the fact that they have only given Moana a water fountain in the Disney parks. As much as I think Princess and the Frog is cool with the animation style and the first black princess…it just isn’t nearly as widely loved as Moana. Same goes for Coco and Encanto. I know Encanto is more recent but I think in a few years it too will fade and Moana will still be here loved by the majority of everyone who have seen it.

neither princess and frog, coco or encanto have “faded”. All 3 are getting rides in Disneyland actually
