I saw a critique from a Brazilian reviewer with a point about the show that I actually liked a lot. It was that Sangwoo and Gi-Hun are pretty symmetric in a lot of ways. Gi-Hun would steal money from his mother to bet on horse races, while Sangwoo would steal money from his clients to do high risk investments. Gi-Hun would trick an old man with dementia in order to survive, while Sangwoo would trick an innocent guy who trusted him. The difference between the two of them lies not in the fact that Sangwoo do immoral things while Gi-Hun don't: they both act immorally multiple times. They differ, however, in the way they feel while and after doing what they do. Gi-Hun feels guilty, he understands what he did was wrong, he feels bad. Sangwoo don't, he uses logic and reason to justify his actions.
@AT-rr2xw3 жыл бұрын
That is pretty interesting. With Gi-Hun, it eats him up inside while Sang-woo can rationalize anything if given a second to think of something.
@alexjames47703 жыл бұрын
I mean, to me, the difference is that Gi-Hun not only feels guilty, but draws a line that he will not cross. Yes, we as the audience feel bad about him tricking Il-Nam, but he’s tricking a dying old man, with no family and “dementia” who he basically saved the last 2 games. Versus Sang Woo is tricking a young man with 50 years of life ahead of him, a wife and a baby, who he was willing to let choose a bad shape for honeycomb, and arguably did more to help them win Tug o War. Not to mention, once they start losing at marbles, Sang-Woo darkens and shows his true colors, while Gi-Hun seemingly accepts his fate, until Il-Nam intentionally opens the door for him to save himself. I don’t particularly dislike Sang-Woo, I think he’s an every man, that we watch be changed by the game as it darkens his soul.

Korean shows are almost uniformly one-and-done affairs. There have been a few exceptions over the years, and even then most of those have been set in the world of the first season but not direct continuations. Now with Netflix producing kdramas as well, things are changing up a bit and the idea of multiple season shows are becoming more common (like Kingdom, also on Netflix, also top-tier stuff). But for the most part, they're usually self-contained singular shows. The funniest part about watching reactions to this episode is how one of the biggest shocks of the whole series barely even registers - having Lee Byung Hun behind that mask would be like it was a US series and it was Brad Pitt or George Clooney. Guy's been around for decades and starred in handfuls and handfuls of some of Korea's very best films - he's literally a living legend.

It barely registers because at the point of the reveal, it is expected to be the brother...who portrays the brother is irrelevant to that point, as we have already seen photos of him. @@Mr10before9 incorrect, sir. Putting together that his brother is the Front Man is one thing, but the reveal of who plays him is never given away. What show have you been watching?” What about the show you’ve seen so far makes you think they would care? They probably did it HOPING it would injure one or all of the contestants. It was the final challenge of the game, simultaneously killing anybody who may have still have been left on the bridge, and potentially injuring or killing anybody who got across. The whole purpose of the penultimate game seemed to be to weed out as many as possible before the final game. It took out the highest percentage of players, by design.

A lot of people went into this hoping it'd be like a Marvel movie where there would be Gi Hun's team vs. Deok Su's team at the end. I think this story is better because it doesn't pull its punches, kills off the fan favorites, and goes "what did you really think this was fair from the start?" It sticks to its theme and knows that it's painful for people to lose the flawless characters who did nothing wrong. That's why it works as an allegory for capitalism and a good story. In the first game people were twitching and got shot. 2nd game you were SOL if you got scared by gunshots and broke your cookie. The glass bridge just removed the illusion of fairness like "work hard and you'll make a lot of money."

@@kosmikos_ That doesn't prove anything, he could easily have dropped it on purpose to lure Gi-Hun in, knowing full well Gi-Hun's character and assuming that Gi Hun would hesitate to stab him. We also have to remember that Sang Woo probably underestimates Gi Hun heavily and doesn't see a possibility of actually losing to him. I'm not saying that it's impossible that he was actually asleep. It's possible sure, but it's also equally possible that he was pretending. But yes, it's likely that he fell asleep, woke up when Gi Hun started banging on the door, and sliced Sae Byeok. I know it's typical K-drama tropes, but that was too dumb and coincidental for me. Why does the mysterious character always have to be revealed to be a person related and/or have history with the main character? I would've been fine with the Front Man being some rando the cop never seen before, that's more realistic too.
@Rakerong3 жыл бұрын
@@A-Dubs398 Yeah. At least it wasn't like he won last year and now he joins the organization the next. The man won 5 years ago, and seeing as how he needed to play the game he was probably another deadbeat or downtrodden who seldom spoke to family. He was barely around, and didn't seem to live the life of luxury. He still lived in the same small apartment which he paid rent for. The unrealistic thing seems to be the cop being so determined to find him that he'd go to those lengths to infiltrate alone. He didn't even try to get other trusted cop buddies to help, he just went in alone. It was cool at first, then you realize how unrealistic it becomes lol. Then the big reveal at the end you already predicted it so it falls flat.

Genuinely surprised you guys didn’t figure out who the Front man was to me it was pretty obvious when he found the cops ID on the dead body on the beach, the front man looked at it for a suspiciously long time. When the cop infiltrated the VIP room as a waiter and that perv VIP kept coming onto him it repeatedly did a close up of the Front mans face and finally before the final showdown the Front man accurately talked about many bullets a police gun would have, that last part made it very apparent he was the cops brother.

Exactly. When Jun Ho is first introduced he's phone talking to his mom while driving and reassuring her he'll file a missing persons report on In Ho the next morning. That sounds like someone who hasn't been heard in days, not years. Presumably In Ho returned to his life after winning 2015 but kept his wealth secret from family, opting to live in a modest inn to keep his new identity secret (as front man). It feels like he developed a cultish admiration for the "equality" of the games and got recruited, and running the games became more important to him than spending the money.

I don't think so, because most of the games are timed and therefore also eliminate players that don't finish. In this case, the platforms would explode underneath for those that didn't cross in time or would probably get shot if they kept going even after the timer reached zero. No one would really know that a big glass shard would end up in one of the contestants, that was just bad luck and bad decision on her part by pulling out the glass shard.

While Sang-Woo, the pride of SNU, devolved to killing people while using deception to stay alive, Gi-Hun was helping people like Il-Nam and Sae-Byeok while using his resourcefulness to help himself in the process. Both outcomes are very human responses. We have no idea who we would be like if we were put in the same position.
