The older I get, the more my understanding of this show evolves. Watching this now, as the mature mother of two teens (one of whom is trans in the most conservative state in America), I understand what Buffy was thinking as she listened to everyone talk in the other room. I understand the impact of that moment when you realize that others NEED you to become more than you've been before.

It was a shock but needed. Just like the rocker Vampire that seriously hurt Buffy in Fool For Love, we needed to expand the pool of Vampires . In life , we all learn that there is always a “ champion” somewhere that is faster, stronger, and more talented. A true champion understands and uses their mental toughness to find the edge for victory. We see this in sports with the more talented athletes are defeated by the “ crafty” veteran. That’s why we have the scene of a reflective Buffy composing her battle plan. We have seen this many times before.

This episode was where I started to notice simple things they should be doing to fight the First Evil that they don’t, like having a system of shaking hands or other touch to make sure it’s not pretending to be someone. This is especially the case with Giles, who is teased as potentially dead for a lot of episodes.

Dream Joyce is just Buffy talking to herself trying to parse what she's facing. She's just processing. Ya'll are gonna love it when you find out what's up with Principal Wood. Suraj hitting on the big theme of Buffy's character. She chooses. Buffy always chooses. Because that's what becoming a fully-realized adult is. All of which demonstrates and ties into the Angel series theme of "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."

It's like when you've been feeling hopeless (because of your depression) for years and you find something (within you) to hold on, that gives you strength, that awakens that fire inside you. Solid reaction. Your body language and verbal thoughts are similar to ours when we watched this episode. My group enjoyed this episode but we all seemed down. After a few minutes one of the girls started to sob and blurted out, we are halfway to the end! The momentary silence followed by a group realization that the journey was winding down and none of us wanted Buffy to conclude. You are doing a great job reacting and sharing your thoughts. Bittersweet is the feeling hanging over the show and we truly believe that is how almost everyone feels that has watched every episode. Keep doing your excellent reactions. You are hitting the home stretch and it’s really some good storytelling to conclude a story that no one really wants to end.

when this episode when it aired, we all knew it was probably the last season - but we were all was hoping for it not to be the case - until Buffy's speech at the end of the episode. At that moment, I was all in for Buffy (the show) to end how the show runners felt best to do so. That speech was amazing.

Another terrific episode building up towards the epic ending of the Series. Again we see Joyce appearing to Buffy, but Buffy knows now it is not real. Some light relief with Dawn and Anya revelling in the interrogation of Andrew doing 'bad cop and bad cop'! When Buffy has the encounter with the Turok-Han, we can see alone at the moment she hasn't the power to defeat it, and this is shown again by her second encounter. However, she gives a superb speech at the end reminiscent of the speech in S5 Checkpoint when she calls out The Council. We can see Spike as well totally believe Buffy will save him him even though he is tormented by Drusilla and tortured by the Turok-Han. Giles of course survives his attack in London, and turns up with a few potentials, but at this moment it is not enough. Principal Wood again we think is not what he seems, and a funny scene when Dawn says over the symbol in the basement they are burying a time capsule and says 'kids today drink Red Bull and watch Jackass'. All in all a brilliant build up to the end of the show with Buffy's brilliant speech at the end.

KZbin/the networks only allows so much of an episode to be aired in an episode before giving a strike or demonetizing the video (aka they earn no money from it). It's a very picky system.

The Turok-Han is one of those things where I like the concept and execution quite a bit in this episode but he looks a bit too silly imo and they needed to escalate the threat in this way earlier as opposed to it happening in episode 10. The whole season should have had this under siege feel to go along with the little hints with "from beneath you it devours" and the flashes of what we now know are potential slayers being killed. One of the things I think the show got weaker at was cool demon/vampire design, in seasons 2, 3 and 4, you had a lot of practical designs sometimes enhanced with early CGI (and obviously sometimes they look wonky now in HD). Then in S5 and after it feels like the show reverted to a lot more basic vampires and such, with the big villains being Glory (who was acted well and the season was good but they could have given her some cool armour, bits of her true form peaking through or something for the later bits of the season), Warren/Andrew and now the First just taking the forms of humans or human looking people. Gnarl in the early S7 episode and Sweet the singing demon in S6 being notable exceptions who were very cool and creepy.

Without wanting to over-do it, Kennedy is extremely irritating as a character. You can't introduce someone in the seventh season of a show whose default stance to the protagonist is "I'm not impressed", who has done and goes on to do basically nothing, and not expect them to get a lot of pushback

I thought it quite reasonable of her to ask for weapons in a situation where they were basically sitting ducks in a boarded-up house, just waiting to be attacked. The potentials have different personalities and hers is a bit more proactive, wanting to step up and be ready to fight, which makes her kind of awesome IMO. 😃

If Kennedy was in the show a bit longer and wasnt a Tara replacement people would be fine with her character. She is as flawed as every character in the show and also has qualities like all of them. I look at the way Joyce worked in this episode as Buffy was having a slayer dream imagining The First as her mom and the second time it was The First. Either way nothing Joyce says and does is Joyce in this episode and its all untrustworthy. Just as it was with Dawn in _Conversations with Dead People._ The reason why their wouldn't be anymore slayer after Buffy is because she no longer would activate anymore SIT's. And Faith would have if all the SIT's hadn't been murdered before she was. The Normies talked over the S3 reference. "Fuck it, I'm evil." Do we really expect any other respose from Pat? Doutful. "What makes you think you'll be good at anything at all in this world." The least sounding Dru line I've ever heard. Spike is right Dru was crazier than The First posing as Dru. Marketa, The Turok-Han is not resting during the day. It is beating the @#$% out of Spike. W&H is an evil organization. But they are not the be all that ends all of evil and never have been. They are the metaphor to how actual law firms work except they work within the mythical part of The Buffyverse. Suraj hit the nail on the head for how the show now works outside of the coming of age part of the storytelling vs the adulthood storytelling. In these situations during the coming of age storytelling most (not all) she usually needs others to lift her up during a low. Now she is doing that for others. Andrew is a follower who's been easily manipulated. We still haven't seen who he is or what he's like without other people/entities taking advantage of him.

SPOILERS Spike: You're not Drusilla The First: No. I'm really not. Spike: She was crazier than you. Spike and The First both just explained that Spike can see that The First isn't acting like Drusilla and The First stated that while it takes on the look and persona and attitude it knows it isn't who they are mimicing, even if doing a good job at it, which will beg the question later on as to how much truth their is in that o in what it says to Faith as The Mayor when it says it is The First and The Mayor. I think it was lying to Faith as The Mayor because it couldn't play Dru very well. Dru would never say this, "What makes you think you'll be good at anything at all in this world." Or at least not the way The First said it. At best you could argue Spike saw through The First's charade, and The First broke character, but that just proves the point more that it was liying to Faith about being The Mayor and The First. I think the real idea is that The First poses as said dead people it pretends to be.

There's always one. Personally, I can't believe someone can have strong feelings like these about such a nothing character. Seriously, the only real point to that character is a fresh set of eyes to remind the viewers of how dire the situation has become. Cause to the viewer, it's just another Thursday night in Sunnydale with Buffy's house all busted up. But it's really not just another Thursday night. This is about as low as the Scooby Gang has ever been in terms of fighting evil. And Kennedy is just a device to illustrate this to a viewership that has become used to apocalypses. Like there's been about a dozen end of the world events that Buffy has faced.
