No that wasn't a "slow motion" explosion. That was exactly how fire burns in space in a Zero-G, low-pressure environment. Astronauts on the International space station have simulated the same effect. The show did a great job in simulating what would happen if you had an explosion on your console in space.

explain how thrusters could even work at all, those burning molecules do not go slower than the speed limit, they just casually put some purple glow to it and have it work anyways, where as previously the glow stopped the torpedo completely did it not, same kind of trail

What Melba attached to the freight door of the Roci was an emergency blister airlock. Once pressurized it is basically a big plastic bag glued to the ships surface with two airtight chambers and the possibility to move between them. We have seen these contraptions before, first on the Donnager and the second time when they rescued the martian sailors from the wreck early this season.

CitizenHans -- Yes. The mech suit gave her the strength to rip through the cargo door (the patched part, at least), and then she deployed the temp airlock after. (It's too bad they didn't show her ripping the Thomas Prince supply officer apart to get the suit, but they probably decided the episode had enough squick in it already.)

The orange glow was fire. There is no 'up' in zero-g, so fire expands in a spherical form.

The purpose of Naomi opening the doors was to vent the oxygen inside the ship so the fire would go out, right? I thought it was pretty obvious that it was fire after she did that. At first I thought she was putting on her suit because she was abandoning ship, but she just put it on so she could breathe after the doors opened.

Like, that's why in S1 Avasarala thought it was plausible that Fred Johnson might've built the stealth ships, cause Tycho was already constructing the largest and most advanced generation ship ever. And between Tycho, Ceres and Eros stations Tycho Corp is pretty experienced with building for spin gravity.

I think Nahid is 100% wrong about Melba's intentions for Holden. She knows as much about the Protomolecule as her father and his team of scientists did and nothing more. And even none of them knew what "the work" was. Melba is solely out for revenge in the name of her father to prove she wasn't the huge disappointment that her father always made her believe she was/is.

About the jetpack and the speed limit; all the ships have been pulled into close orbit around the station at this point, so while its 7 months to the ring its much quicker to hop from one ship to another. So the speed limit isnt as big a deal in that particular situation.

Okay, nah. The door the hybrid destroyed was fixed clean. Melba/Clarissa was carrying an emergency airlock, that's what you saw; inflated plastic that keeps the air in, meant for boarding a ship or rescuing people from one. She cut into the cargo bay via the doors and the emergancy airlock sealed that breach.

She was also wearing a Mech rig which a has cutter and whatnot attached for salvage work. Make more sense to use that in a fight for her as well, she's got all the power and strength without the side effects of her "secret ability" which only works for a short time and leaves her feeling like shit.

Ashford's line "I will sacrifice my pride to make something better for the future" reminds me of G'Kar from Babylon 5. But, despite the insight into his motives, I still think there is something shady about the character. In his speech to the other ships, I find it odd and a bit disrespectful that he doesn't acknowledge Drummer who commanded the ship before him.

Clarissa/Melba had an emergency airlock she got off the Thomas Prince stores right before she went out the airlock. She attached it to the Roci, inflated it (it's basically reinforced plastic and air bottles, if I remember the books correctly), got in, and then tore open the door with the mech suit. The useful stuff you learn when you're impersonating a low-level Space Tech! :D So the airlock is still holding the air in the Roci. (How Anna got through without Melba noticing is a little hand-wavy ... although Clarissa/Melba and Naomi might not have noticed pressure loss if BOTH of them were elsewhere in pressurized parts of the Roci. Clarissa/Melba seemed like she'd been doing the same tour of the ship looking for Holden that Naomi had done as she rescued her other boys. Yeah, if you didn't catch the text on the square saying it was an emergency airlock (it flashed by QUICK)....well, admittedly, a HELL of a lot was happening this episode in the Slow Zone. :D Sad you guys won't be "here" next week (seriously, your reacts help me process this show, ESPECIALLY the last few weeks)...but it'll be cool to see what you think of the finale. Hells, I'M not sure where they're going to end things ... but at least it's two episodes! I was not ready for how this season was going to hurt me in so many ways.

Heavy stuff does not slow you down in space. Heavy stuff makes your acceleration (deltaV) take more energy (slower for same thrust). Speed is only a function of how long you apply thrust.

I think everyone's in for some unpleasant truths when they find out there aren't enough food and supplies to last seven months. They will starve to death before they can even exit Ring Space. Ashford's going to have to face that fact, and in the previews it has him talking personally to Holden about his apocalyptic visions.

Crazy enough the scene on the Thomas Prince with Anna waking up to the carnage of the instant deceleration was much worse in the book. For example, a neighbor to Anna was halfway in his crash couch when it happened so his legs were completely mangled with a snapped pelvis. Anna found a person ripped in half because they were midway through a door. Any person not in a crash couch was killed or severely injured. Anna describes it as what she could imagine hell being like. It's a great chapter in the book Sidenote: They're doing a much better job with Ashford's character in the tv show. So many differences but it all makes sense. Poor Drummer, taking Bull's role from the book :(

It's my understanding that most people watched at least season 1. The "save the cheerleader, save the world" is one of the first internet memes I can remember.

Man, season 1 of that show was great. It had such great potential even part way into season 2, but it dropped off so hard. Making Peter, Hiro and Sylar so OP and allowing the latter to survive past the first season really harmed the series. They also really didn't know what to do with Nathan despite him being one of the best acted and most interesting characters imo, they really wasted Adam Monroe to set up a much worse villain and didn't do enough with other really cool characters like Claude and the Haitian. The best character in the show (Noah) didn't even have powers! Then they made similar mistakes when given the chance for a revival series. Someone else running that show could have made it a classic.

What I found really interesting was that it was the first show that kinda proved to me it's possible to have a long-running story with superheroes that doesn't turn into Smallville. And I liked it more than most that came afterwards, with Legion being the one exception I picked up and still watch.

Serious question...maybe someone who has read the book can answer: What was the Mormon plan for their ship? Was it going to spin to make gravity (outward) BUT what about the thrust/acceleration in the direction of travel? (How other ships simulate gravity)... Wouldn't that make traveling on the ship hard since there would be two types of "gravity" perpendicular to each other???

I assume it doesn't really matter at all. Parts that don't spin simply have gravity facing one way, due to the thrust, while the 'drum' or spinning section of the ship have gravity that flows in another direction. A better question would be how do people enter and exit the spinning part once it starts..spinning? How would hatches or doors between the two parts work? What about any elevators or tram systems? How would they even get through any bulkheads considering one part of the ship is constantly in motion whereas another part isn't?

Considering the long duration of the expected trip of the Nauvoo, it wasn't going to be able to keep its engines on for the entire thing. In fact, they would only be on for a rather tiny proportion of the trip. During the coasting phase they would spin up the drum and that is where they would spend most of their time living. As far as how to transfer between them, you'd probably just have special tram cars that can remain stationary and spin up to match the drum to facilitate the transfer.

That makes a lot of sense....burn fuel to get up to a "coasting speed" then shut them off and coast for years and years and years...during which the drum spins....and then "flip" and burn to decelerate when they finally get there...

1. Accelerate at 1G to cruising speed. ( No idea how many years it would take.) 2. Coast in zero G, then spin the drum for most of the 100 yr trip. 3. Flip & burn into deccel until you reach the new star. All the soil, crops & livestock would be stored during accel/deccel.

The Epstein drive might be ridiculously effective converting energy into thrust, but it still needs reaction mass to create said thrust. In other words, superheated plasma is blowing out of the drive cone and pushes the ship forward. That plasma comes from water onboard and this "fuel" is finite. The idea is to spend only a portion of the water to speed up (and then float for most of the way), another portion to decelerate at the destination star system and use the last portion to survive the trip by permanently recycle the water. It is either spin or thrust gravity, both at the same time would fuck everything up. Not to mention turn the inside of the drum into a death trap. Traversing between the outer drum under spin gravity and the still weigthless spine of the ship is quite straight forward and easy to do. Judging by the promo for next week they will show us how.

Because they don't know what we know, as the audience. From their perspective, you've got this crazy Earther talking to himself, heading to an unknown, alien structure, which *opened to let him in* , then he does some unknown thing with the tech onboard, and half the fleet gets slammed. Even if they make the connection between the LT's grenade and the new speed limit, from what they actually witnessed, at the least, it seems Holden could have *stopped* it, if he wasn't actually the cause.

Just rewatched the episode and realized that Calrissa Mao had a portable blister airlock which allowed her to tear open the hatch on the Roci and allowed it to seal and pressurize the room. That what she use to also magnetized her onto the exterior of the Roci.

I think Clarice Mao was at the Rosi's outer cargo airlock and used a boarding pack. It's probably portable door that boarding parties (and maybe maintenance personnel) use to gain access to a ship. It's probably a shaped charge or industrial laser that activates after you clamp the metal plate to a hull. It seals and creates an opening through the outer hull. Then you can open the sides of the plate, creating a door. You go in, seal the door behind you and open the inner airlock door (which probably has less security.). That's how Mao got in and V came in the same way. (She probably saw her creating the opening.). I figure Clarice Mao was experienced in space. Her seeming trying to catch up to and supplant Julie in their father's eyes would driver her to learn all of Julie's skills (but her sister was just better a them.) But that was a ballsy move for V her in a suit (especially since it was her 1st time in space.)

The one solar system that looked like ours that got blue rayed was not our solar system. When Holden started his vision, it started from the present and went backwards into the past. We know that because you saw the "ring" deconstruct... So the vision was going backwards in time. Holden saw what happened in the past. That solar system was just supposed to be a representation of a solar system that was destroyed by the station. It may have "looked" like ours because the show makers ran out of budget and just used an old Earth shot or something.

rana looks spectacular and i was so happy when micky said forerunners next season's about to put that amazon budget to good use i'm excited too i was expecting ashford to take advantage for about half the episode! it is possible to blame clarisa because she made an unstable situation just plain volatile the slowzone is frightening they did it so well this episode! and rana loved the same drummer line i did! i liked ashford before but i liked him as i like a wellwritten antagonist with good chemistry this was a real good episode for him i forget did the mormons come up with the drum i figured fred johnson did and this is better than westworld!

I posted something on tumblr saying how excited I was for the production values/special effects The Expanse was going to have on Amazon in lieu of Amazon taking up the show, ..and someone reminded me that Alcon Entertainment produces The Expanse, and that since they control the budget, the budget won’t be changing just because it’s going to Amazon. ..But.. wouldn’t it? I assume Amazon would be making more money in terms of airing the show, so then Alcon would arrange a bigger budget? ..Or am I wrong?

i get what micky is say tho, How is Clarissa Mao able to do all of this? i mean i know that she's on something that seems to give her strenth, but how is she so good at being a spy' and how are her combat skills so good? When just a short time ago she was planning parties, Now she's taking on marines in combat, something doesn't add up.

When did she actually fight any Marines? The answer is never. So far she's used black market implants to beat to death an aging, out of shape technician who wasn't expecting a fight and a socialite who also didn't expect to be attacked. Everything else is a matter of technical skills and observation. She had the BEST education money could buy because of her Dad's wealth and she's been planning this whole thing for months. She's had the time and ability to learn everything.

"Is that a slow motion explosion ?" --> That... wouldn't have made any sense XD And good reaction, guys. For a bloody good season. The first half is like a non-stop masterpiece, and even though I wasn't entirely sold on the second half (that Mao sister story line was a bit sub par, and the last episode is rushed), it was overall very satisfying.

The zero G effects were outstanding in this episode. I liked Ashford's speech & I'm down with all he said but I still can't shake the feeling that there's some major betrayal coming. The Martian Marines were the weakest part of the ep. as they were once again just idiotic simpletons. I mean I'm okay with Bobbie & them firing on Holden & there's no way they could've predicted all the ships getting stopped from the grenade attack but CLEARLY the commander got himself killed when he did that. Blaming Holden for that is bizzare. Their powers of observation are terrible.

I checked it and there are several regional groups of Methodists in America that have ministers in same-sex relationships, though others have them banned. Apparently this has been an issue among the American Methodists for the last 15 years or so, so perhaps one of the authors felt like adding his own statement to the debate.
