19:26 100% RM is a flash in the pan. They're hideous and the buyers are only buying them because they cost insane amounts of money. They have achieved some fairly interesting technical feats, which is about the only positive thing anyone can find to say about them, but then so have many other brands which cost a tiny fraction of an RMs price. They're artifacts of soulless flexing culture, with gaudy and humongous early 2000s case designs that anyone except a trained eye would simply dismiss as an Invicta or other similar Home Shopping Network merchandise.

Good video. The one fallacy of Pharrell having a crystal ball is that I don’t think he could see the future. He just had the money and liked the design. Since he is prominent, he and other rappers then popularized AP in pop culture, thus driving up demand. In other words, he didn’t predict the future. He played a large role in creating the demand.

Pharrell has always been someone I've followed when it came to watches. I remember when the "Frontin'" video came out 20 years ago and him wearing the AP. Jay-Z would be an interesting one to do a similar story on. I know he mentions the brand on the Blueprint 2 Album. He did a lot of work with Pharrell ( The Neptunes) during that time and I'm sure they both influenced each others tastes in watches.

Bape is a japanese brand that Pharell popularized in North America. Nigo who started the brand now is head of Kenzo

So I bought Focal Bathy headphones. Love them. Thanks for the recommendation. I’m an audiophile and much prefer these to Bose and B&W headphones I’ve owned prior Pharell. Much respect. He deserves his success As per his music, and fashion/style, he’s mostly set trends rather than followed them. And whilst he will have rarified early access to brands, and emerging styles, there is still a relatively small proportion of people you can say that about.

Agree that wrist alarm watches are very useful. I have a 1950s JLC world time alarm. I used it every morning to wake me up. They are such useful and underrated complications. They're perfect for young people who get distracted with the passing of time talking too much. I grew up wearing Bape. Pharrell & Nigo released some hugely popular streetwear. I would say his watch influence wasn't even well publicized at the time. It was overshadowed by the G-shocks he was wearing and colourful sneakers & signature hoodies. Bape also released a replica Rolex they called the Bapex. They still make them today with some pretty cool colours. In hindsight Pharrell should've been creative director of LV back when Murokami was designer for them. He would have done a much better job than Marc Jacobs & been more relevant and impactful at the time of his peak popularity.

Now the title matches the reality. He might have a great collection but if there is no monetary limit in life, everybody can have such one. Great respect for everyone that collects watches while having a limited amount of money. If you have several hundred millions in the bank, you are not collecting, you are investing and showing off because your surrounding expects that with that kind of wealth. Otherwise you would not buy 5 mio $ watches but a 100k one (which is still absurd for a watch) and donate the rest of the money silently or whatever else..

I watched a Watchbox interview with a Mr Cho I believe . It was cringing to watch them grovelling to this guy with his huge collection. Their opening statement to him was that he has been collecting for a long time. Jesus, he only started a few years ago and considering that he is the son of one of the wealthiest Asian families it sure doesn’t impress me. He can literally buy or get almost anything he wants. Someone who had modest means and has a small collection of little value impresses me much more.

But once you get deeper, you'll realise that the generic nh35/36 and eta clones and the missing details in the mass produced case dials hands erc just dont tickle that itch anymore.

AP has been a thing in Europe for a long time, same as famous Parisian fashion houses that the US market never paid any attention to. He just had exposure to a different culture that most Americans did not. Ex US travel is a recent thing, nobody was hopping on a plane to Tokyo for the heck of it 20 yrs ago.

Hyper successful artists are like hyper successful tech moguls, politicians, athletes, etc. They’re incredibly good at one thing and have tons of influence. Pharrell is a musical genius, but I think LVMH has either over evaluated his fashion sense or is banking on his influence. He’s a taste maker bc he’s influential, not bc he’s a prophet.
