Today, Christian visits London Jewelers' Manhasset location to review three watches that prove just why Grand Seiko is such a dominating force in the watch market! The three main reasons are their dials/materials, their attention to the US market, and their movements.
First, we have the SBGA413, a member of the brand's Four Seasons collection. This example is the "Spring" variant, with a beautiful light pink dial that recalls the color of freshly fallen cherry blossom leaves. It's crafted from high-intensity titanium, making is super light on the wrist and also very durable, is a US market exclusive (along with the rest of the collection), and is powered by the brand's Spring Drive technology, making it the perfect bridge between the three reasons we outlined.
Next up, we have the SBGP015, a member of the 60th Anniversary collection with its stunning blue sunburst dial and pop of red on the seconds hand. Crafted from steel and 200 meters water resistant, the main defining feature of this watch is its matching blue ceramic bezel, which is non-rotational and plays beautifully with the light.
Finally, we have the SBGA429, another US special edition like the Four Seasons, this time celebrating "soko," or the time of the first frost. Its vertically grained, charcoal-colored dial is meant to embody the aesthetic of the thick bamboo forests of Japan, with accents of green to reinforce the ever-present role of nature in the Grand Seiko design process.

Rolex is the De Beers of the watch industry. They artificially limit supply to convoy exclusivity. Many fashion houses do the same with luxury goods such as handbags. It’s all marketing and people keep falling for it. Just as how most people don’t know anything about diamonds except that they’re expensive, most people don’t know much about watches except they know that they want a Rolex. And even horological enthusiasts want a Rolex because they too are victims of envy.

I saw Grand Seikos in real life, for the first time ever, a month ago. These timepieces are truly breathtaking. And if I’m not mistaken, the sales specialist actually had the four-season watches on display. He also told me that if one has all four watches, Grand Seiko gifts the proud owner with an exclusive box to house the watches.

Weight is important for sport and sport dress watches. However, for such a unique watch with a "snowflake" dial, a light-weight metal should be used..... Snowflakes are light, titanium is light. After all, you don't pickup a heavy snowflake from the ground. Titanium was the right choice.

I was a little disappointed with the weight and thought it felt cheap, years came by where I got sick of wearing bulky/heavy stainless steel watches. I have a GS snowflake a few years ago and own several stainless steel watches. I love the lightness of the titanium and prefer it to stainless. And the spring drive with the polished blue second hand is a beautiful thing to see. Accuracy is a couple seconds per month not per day.

I own 2 Grand Seiko. My first ever high end watch was a GS Spring Drive Snowflake. I collected my GS Snowflake 2 weeks ago and I love the details. But I also love how refreshingly different the weight of the titanium feels on the wrist. It’s my only titanium watch, and most of my watches will ALWAYS be steel, but it makes a really nice change to have the lightweight on rotation.

Great video. I've just bit the bullet and bought my first Grand Seiko. I got the SBGM245 Automatic GMT. It's a beautiful watch. For the past year I've been debating on a Tudor BB Chrono or the Zenith El Primero Sport. The problem is I have 2 Speed Masters already and while those are really nice watches, I was looking for something unique and Grand Seiko has the quality, price and features of a watch that I don't currently have. So it actually makes a great deal of since for my collection. Keep up the great work.

By the time you guys uploaded this video the Four Seasons series was available outside the USA. However, the part number had an added g for global. So my Shunbun Cherry Blossom SBGA413g reveals NOT originating from the USA. I changed the bracelet for a leather strap since I need micro adjustment, especially in the summer. My next GS will be the GS Tentagraph. I can't wait to have it on my wrist.

I own a Seiko SARB035. I can't figure out what my first luxury piece would be, but Grand Seiko is definitely on the list. For me, it would be a 9F quarts or a high-beat automatic. Personally, I do prefer stainless steel cases. That said, I just love Seiko's 'Grammar of Design'. It's so unique you won't mistake it for anything else out there. Kind Seiko SJE083J1 is another great watch from Seiko. I'm looking to new releases under the 'King Seiko' name. Would love to see more watchmaking outside Switzerland on the channel.

Purchased my 60th Anniversary hibeat limited blue dial from Viv at London in manhasset . The Watch and London are top notch. It is Very true what Anthony said it’s the new watch makers watch and high end watch collector’s watch. I never thought of buying one until I seen one in my hands at my local cigar lounge, I was sold. At this price point it’s amazing and without mentioning $ the watches finishings are better or the best compared to the biggest heavy hitters in the game. When you see someone interested in these pieces most likely they have it all and someone turned them on to the brand, happy with my investment many others will also. Four seasons watches are now available worldwide (or at least they’re available here in NZ). Tried the Shunbun on at my local AD yesterday. Available for sale at list. Not so “US exclusive” any more. Great decision from my perspective (living in NZ). Not sure I’d be too happy if I’d paid a premium for it when it was a US exclusive though!

My affair with Grand Seiko (and lately with Credor) actually started in 2015 because of a Swiss brand: Rolex. Late that year I went to Rolex's AD at Harrods with my mind set on getting a GMT watch with a quickset hour. Upon arrival and some small talk I made my request and the salesperson said to me with a perfectly straight face that I could buy a gold watch, no matter what watch, as long as it was gold, and He could get a GMT II in a couple weeks or I could "join a list" after purchasing any watch, but would have to wait for a year or so to get the call. He wouldn't add me to the list if I didn't buy anything. I got out, checked other watches with a quickset hour and saw the (then) just released SBGC013: a GMT that was also a chrono and had a much accurate timekeeping as well as being in titanium, not steel (350HV vs 200HV on the Rolex). Found an AD, call them, checked they had one and up I went there. Upon arrival and checking the 7k price tag I said that I was just coming from Rolex and that my budget was around 6k so could they do a discount on the timepiece. "No problem, Sir", they said, and I got out of there donning the watch, like people regularly do. After getting several watches from them over the years I found chrono24 and started dabling in Japan-only series which lead me to Credor and even more amazing timepieces. The only Rolex I bought is a Sky-dweller, but I have had some gifted to me, ironically a Rose Gold GMT II. Fun fact: people talk a lot about Rolexes getting up in value. That SBGC013 that started my Grand Seiko collection? today is work 11k. Not bad for something used over the years and that wasn't resting somewhere in a safe. And its a 400 pieces limited edition, not something churned by the thousands every year.

Good points for going Grand Seiko. My one minor complaint, unless this is no longer the case. GS should have local service centres within the country to avoid needing to ship Spring Drive watches to Japan for service.

It’s like cars High end Japanese cars that rival German ones but the marketing makes us think German is more desirable. But I do think maybe GS is beginning to win on style, the dials are way better than the Rolex Oyster colours and it’s palm. I just got the White Birch OMG the dial is like nothing I have experienced before. I found it hard to see a GS in steel at that price because it’s firmly in Rolex territory but it’s so gorgeous. GS and Seiko need better marketing to help everyone understand how desirable their watches are. Love to spend a day at your store one day must be a lot of fun pouring over so many lovely timepieces.

Purchased my SBGA403 limited 500 pcs lion edition at HK in 2019 during the protest period. Very lucky to found the last stock at the authorized dealer. Pretty sure I won't have any chance to get one if there is no protest happening in HK at that time, as no one visiting HK and had the chance to buy it. Simply love the watches and the dial was mesmerizing, and more importantly, suit perfectly with my name (Lion Edition)

In general I prefer steel to titanium, but for chunky watches, especially those 42mm or above, titanium really helps with wearability. I own a 44mm Panerai Luminor Submersible in titanium, and it's an exceedingly comfortable wear. So both metals have a place and a role to play.

I like both titanium and steel. I had a steel watch and a white gold watch. So when I first saw the titanium GS, it was a no brainer. It's great to wear something so light that wears so easily.

Just to clarify ... there are no batteries in a Spring Drive watch (you didn't make that clear). It's a spring powered automatic winding watch 'regulated' by a Quartz crystal! It's the most accurate non-battery watch in the world (

I like titanium, but a lot of people associate weight and heft with high quality. Hand a guy a light weight “anything” and a heavy one. 9/10 will think heavy means better. That is false of course.

Seiko was established in 1881, and it started Grand Seiko in 1960. I discovered Grand Seiko in Japan only about 15 years ago perhaps because I had been away from my home country since early 80s. Then I had a chance to ask Seiko people why I couldn’t find Grand Seiko overseas. They replied “Because it’s troublesome to sell it overseas, i.e., providing maintenance services, etc.” ……. I told them “GO TO HELL.”

People who don’t understand GS bash it. People who own GS praise it. People who know and want a GS don’t want it to become a Rolex wrt price and wait list. If horology and workmanship were the concerns then Rolex has no place in the top tier. Far better watches from swiss and GS are available at a better price. The biggest push behind Rolex at least in the era of social media is the value retention and appreciation.

I have worn a Tissot Titanium watch for a long time, At first, the feel is thin and too light to be strong. Once you realize how strong and hard titanium is, you will appreciate it so much more than a heavy stainless steel watch. The titanium GS Snowflake with the red accents is my Holy Grail watch.
