I actually really like the idea behind this beta map - setting aside all of the unfinished yank. Having a region with such diverse areas and climates would have been great to see on the old GBC. I wonder what sort of challenge would have awaited the player on top of Mount Fuji. A fight against Silver perhaps? Or Blue? An encounter with a legendary or mythical Pokémon?
@TheObsessiveGamer2 жыл бұрын
Mount Fuji battle is what I find a true mystery. Red already being occupied could spin to this a lot of ways.
@MrPSaun2 жыл бұрын
Mt. Fuji would have been the roost of Ho-Oh.
@adidasfan912 жыл бұрын
To me, Blue seems to be the most logical final boss of Mt. Fuji. Having almost immediately lost his status as champion to Red before even Oak could make it there to congratulate him would have been extremely humiliating to him. It makes more sense for him to disappear and train in solitude for years instead of Red. Then once the player meets Blue and Blue learning you defeated Red, he would challenge you to a battle for a shot at redemption. Seems relatively plausible in my own head anyway.
@botchedoperations34858 ай бұрын
I don’t agree. I think what we know about what happened in kanto after red version is a vague story continuity to some information that was planned to be revealed in red version but they ran out of space to program it. -red becomes champion -all that is left is to complete the Pokédex, Pokédex completed -return to oak, and you get congratulated. He then says there is a new task. But wants to test his skills before giving such a task. You battle and when you win you get a peak at gold and silver by gifting you a new starter. Or it’s more disturbing and red becomes dissolution. His mom “our past mom”. Says she is worried about red as she hasn’t seen him in a long time. Blue is still present in everyone’s life.Took a job as a gym leader. When we battle him, he only is ….. doesn’t say a word. Just rhetorically spots you and throws a Pokémon out. Maybe it’s just ego. Got bored of never having a real challenge. Was surprised that we made it through and finally finds a worthy opponent. Goes home theoretically. Or like how we do. Just gets transferred to a Pokémon center. We get blacked out when we lose but..who takes us there?
@RealmsCrossMyths2 жыл бұрын
"It can be theorized that Oak moved…" It's also likely that Oak was a placeholder sprite because specific sprites for the new professor were not made yet; or perhaps he was used in the demo because he would be a familiar face to players who played the original and thus his role would be instantly recognised by demo players who also played the previous games. Just some examples of possible reasons to reuse a sprite in a demo build.
@dylanzlol72932 жыл бұрын
but then what's about the girl in the beta kanto region lab? if it's REALLY a placeholder and Prof. Oak didn't move into another region in the old story, then Oak would've appeared in both labs.
@RealmsCrossMyths2 жыл бұрын
@@dylanzlol7293 I didn't say the only reason was that it's a placeholder; I said it was also likely that it was a placeholder. But, if you want an explaination for the girl in the Kanto lab, it could be that, since Professor oak was already a grandfather of two in B\G\R\Y, and his Grandson was a jerk, the girl in the lab was his Granddaughter, taking care of the lab while he's away on business. As a pokémon proffessor, and creator of the Pokédex, there are likely many important people Proffessor Oak would need to meet and communicate with. If you don't know who Professor Oak's granddaughter is - She gives you the town map in the R\B games. I don't remember if she also does in Yellow…
@dylanzlol72932 жыл бұрын
@@RealmsCrossMyths ik who she is, I just said that it was pretty likely it was the Prof. Oak himself that moved in there, not just a placeholder sprite
@RealmsCrossMyths2 жыл бұрын
@@dylanzlol7293 Both are eaqually likely. Since Proffessor Oak doesn't need to move in order to attend foriegn meet-ups, as seen in other games (he appears in multiple games that take place in different regions, but still lives in Kanto in said games). It's also possible that he's visiting an old friend, the G\S professor, who is out of the lab at the begining of the game (It's a common trope in later games to meet the proffessor only after leaving the starting town to teach you about wild battles against a specific pokémon, instead of one based on your choice or random encounter) and Oak could be waiting to meet up with him. Or Oak could be in an entirely unknow region not explored in the beta. Or Oak could have died within the three years between the two sets of pokémon games, if the three years passing since R\G\B\Y was part of the story even for the original vision of the story. There are many reasons for his sprite to be or not to be a placeholder. To be clear, my gripe is not with Oak possibly having moved to Johto. My grip is with it being viewed as *most likely*. We can assume and throw as much logic at our claims as we want. My points are not any more valid than yours, nor are yours any more valid than mine. We didn't work on the game or its story, so we can only make assumptions based on our experiences and acquired knowledge. Maybe there is, or will be, an interview where one of staff on the writing team says whether or not he was intended to move. But to my knowledge, him having moved is just as likely as being a placeholder or just visiting a friend.
@FamilyTeamGaming2 жыл бұрын
It really is Oak, that's what the in-game dialog of the campaign clearly says. Well, whatever very little dialog is present in what little of the campaign's scripting was actually made. I only managed to get as far as the Rival battle in the lab, though I heard reports of people making it farther than that. Anyway, that alone was more than enough for the dialog to confirm that it is indeed Oak and not a placeholder.

With Birdon likely being Azalea town, I’m fairly certain the building at 8:15 is the original iteration of the Charcoal Kiln house and was likely where you got the Cut HM. The kanji on the banners is hard to make out a bit due to the game boy graphical limitations but appears to be 挿, which when written out in the term 挿木 refers to cuttings of plants. With the plants in the building itself it’s highly likely to me this was a shop for cutting plants and at least would have been the workplace of who gives you the Cut HM

If they ever made another Johto game, (i don't mean a remake or anything i mean a whole new adventure), i'd love to see them flesh out Johto by bringing back some of these cut towns. Like maybe Font town sprang up after someone discovered a new part of the Ruins of Alph or something. Since you mention Sugar Town potentially being conmected to the Lake of Rage they could even just add that town to the Lake. Some of these towns could spring up between older towns, or could even be added as extensions to existing towns, or even make up an entirely new part of Johto to explore, they cpuld even use Sugar Town to connect Old Johto to the new area. Or have the player start in Silent Town and have them reach the Lake of Rage through Sugar Town to access the original Johto. (A bit like Black 2 and White 2.) Perhaps even bring back some of the Beta Pokèmon as recently rediscovered Pokemon thought to be extinct in Johto. I realise i am asking for way too much and its way too much wishful thinking into something that will never happen but i can dream.

4:25 I would argue that this is still the Bell Tower, because it has Ho-oh statue and it is locked behind Cut. 5:00 Imagine this is Ho-oh/Lugia egg, that is supposed to grow for centuries, to finally hatch for the final act. That would be an interesting plotline. Maybe somehow reminiscent of Sun and Moon, with Cosmog. Also on brand for the Hatching Gimmick Region that is Johto. 11:05 This is generation that introduced herbs, so maybe that was it. Or it was just a bike / apricorn / berry / slowpoke tail / rage candy bar / mahogany shop. Or Day Care / other utility building like Move Learner / Deleter / Name Changer / Friendship Checker / Massage spot. 13:35 Lol Canalave. 14:00 That does look like special trainer. Maybe a Gym Leader, important NPC or maybe even reference to Blue from previous games as she was shown on the art, but we never had possibility to play as her. 18:20 Battle Tower or Viridian Fight Club maybe? 20:15 I think that just may be new sprite for Red. Also in Green's house that's probably their mother, with Daisy taking over the lab from Samuel. As it is her sprite from original games.

@@brandonfulstone7628 the beta map would be obviously altered, there's no way something like this beta map would be considered a game considering they add long af roads that would've been flooded with trainers and items, I feel like if they wanted to go with the Beta idea, they would've had to make the map a tad bit bigger, and add more stuff on the long roads that lead to other regions, because no way a game around that era would be considered good if it became a walking simulator that if you ended up killed you'd have to rewalk all the way back there, and Kanto NEEDS to be a lot bigger than its been shown, as its size would feel rather odd.

Some notes about the video: I'm guessing that since Whitney was before Bugsy in the Trainer List that the player was supposed to go to High-Tech before going to Birdon. That would explain why the hypothetical ferry exists, since obviously you wouldn't have gotten Surf at that point. You probably would've gone back on the ferry (since again, no Surf) in order to return to West and then go on to Birdon, and then the rest of the game. I'm guessing that the boat ride with Mr. Briney was inspired by this cut ferry. That brings up the question of just how South was supposed to be accessed, or what it's point was. I'm guessing that the Eevee (or an equivalent Pokémon) may have still been planned to be there, but that the interior was simply incomplete. Red seems to have originally been called Blue according to the Trainer List. I'm guessing that Blue still goes by Green here, so it seems that there may not have been a character named "Red" in this beta. I wonder why the palletes look like that in Silph Co and the Safari Zone... Clearly they were never intended to look like that. You'd think that a map from Generation I would be more compatible with this beta, since they generally look very similar. A mine in North makes sense, since Sinnoh would eventually go on to have a mine, but if it was in South, then that would be interesting since Hoenn never had such a setting. I'm guessing the concept may have been brought back for the Oreburgh Mines. I have a certain thought telling me that the mine could've originally been two, though I'm not sure how likely this is to be the case. It's interesting that Kanto even looks this recognizable when it's that squished in. It's obvious that Iwata did wonders in being able to expand it beyond just a megacity of sorts. I do wonder why the new region wasn't at least considered after that point, but it did bring us the final Johto so... Overall, good job!
@TheObsessiveGamer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do agree that that was the natural path there likely. I just went with what the demo would allow me without the need to use the built in warp there. I imagine back then they hadn't decided what to name Gen 1's original 3 trainers yet and may have simply called him Blue cause that was the last version released in Japan at the time. Well the odd part is that Silph Co isn't even a port, it's actually a redone map as the design is actually different when compared. I am thinking the wrong colour palettes must have been assigned here at the time simply. Yeah I am leaning more towards it being a Sinnoh Mine rather due to how some of this was already reused for Gen 4, but couldn't completely count Hoenn out cause of how Kyushu also had mines. Well if giving us a complete Kanto, you can't have the rest of Japan be that small next to it i'd think lol, so makes sense why they instead went and used the region next to it as the main region.
@Hijiri_MIRACHION2 жыл бұрын
@The Obsessive Gamer That does make sense, considering that the main focus was the map, the warp feature would more so count as a debug feature. That would explain the palletes, but those colors specifically do look weird next to the rest of the game. I did actually give the Kanto issue a bit of thought, and it probably would look weird anyway. Then again, I was more so considering the Town Map at the time. Thinking about it,, they probably decided that it raised too many questions about the rest of the region, and they probably didn't want to work out the scale of Kanto compared to the other cities. Then again, had they not changed the map, it would still bring issues due to Kanto being an entire region in the previous games.

It's odd when you actually read about the compression algorithm. It used more cartridge space than it saved, and the Kanto region would have fit on the cart without it.

I find it very interesting to see this sort of stuff. It gives you an early insight to what the developers had in mind for the game. Like returning Kanto, using all of Japan, instead of parts of it, as the base region like nowadays and meeting (Red) the protagonist from the past game, honestly, I am now very curious to know the timeline where Iwata didn't interfere with Pokemon Gold/Silver development and instead of adding the entire Kanto region, we got to explore Japan on the second game basically Thanos' snapping both Hoenn and Sinnoh and making it so each new gen is based on a different country.

This is a really great video! Thoroughly enjoyed watching this walk through the beta G&S. Great content, and great research. I especially like how you went into detail about each city and the likely region of Japan it represented, along with pictures! Very nice touch. If I may offer some feedback (and I'm by no means an expect), I'd suggest trimming down the script in future videos by looking for repeated or redundant words. For example, I felt like I was hearing "however" every 30 seconds or so! haha There were also redundant phrasings or words that didn't really add any content to the sentence, like "Also, while here ... actually" at 8:59. Or starting at at 6:39, "So we'll *head* to the other side by using the long path of *heading* north *instead* [...] and *here* [...] but *here* *instead* [...] but alas, *here* we are". I apologize if these aren't the best examples. I quickly skimmed through the video after finishing it to try to find some moments that captured the feeling I got. I think refining the script in terms of wording (not in terms of content -- your content and research is SUPERB!) would bring this video from a really great video to a perfect video. Please don't take my suggestion harshly. I'm subscribed to you and hit that like button moments into the video because it's great. The Mine dungeon likely went in Blue Forest - the deepest mine in Japan is in Aomori prefecture, and the coal mine has seven floors, the deepest of any dungeon in the Spaceworld beta. The holes in the ground also line up a touch with some of the floors of the mine. The power plant dungeon was not planned for Kanto. A later version of the Japan map from a 1998 archive shows that the cave on mountainous route between Newtype and Blue Forest had a power plant building where the cave was. The girl in Oak's lab is Daisy Oak. It is very important to note that the leader in Kanto was likely not Red - the data clearly calls the leader Blue. In Japan, Blue refers to the female trainer from the Manga, and Green refers to the rival, so it is likely that the leader was meant to be her. Red is likely an optional super boss. Bugsy likely wasn't a child at this point in development. The taller stature and sharper jaw line suggest he was meant to be a classy gentleman of some sort. The trees east of Birdon aren't dead because the area is colder - Newtype and the next two routes have fully leaved trees after all - the coastline it represents is actually decently warm for its latitude. It's just a further exaggeration of the dunes. While it is commonly claimed that Font represents Izumo, I personally doubt this. The routes between Birdon and Font have a noticeable lake right next to the ocean as the land bends up and away from Birdon. This lake is where Izumo would actually be on the map, as the city sits next to two brackish lagoons on the coast. On both the town map and the overworld, Font sits at the very tip of the land touching Kyushu. Font is in my opinion, Yamachuchi prefecture, which is home to the longest cave system in Japan. The odd building in Stand is likely the original concept for the daycare, as data leftover in the modern game has a similar map with a name that indicates some relation to breeding. The league building in Fuji likely isn't Indigo Plateau. Kanto's gym is located where Indigo Plateau would be, so the building in Fuji is likely a national league. Mt. Fuji probably wasn't used for a fight with a trainer - Lugia did not exist at this stage in development(1997) as it wouldn't be created until Pokémon: The Movie 2000 entered production sometime in late 1998-early 1999, and Ho-oh was the mascot of both versions. Given the lack of any analogue to the Tin Tower in this game, Ho-oh was probably meant to be fought on the peak of Mt. Fuji as a sort of Mewtwo-style final challenge.

Considering Mt. Fuji is where lots of Suicides occur in Japan. I'm not surprised things were cut and or renamed. Though, I'm curious to see where the game would of went.

Man, it would be awesome if Pokemon Company and Nintendo dusted off these ideas of a total Japan game from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and made it a legit mainline Pokemon RPG, for whatever the next Switch console (Switch 2?) is going to be!

There is a rom hack online (gold silver 97 reforged) that does this already if you are interested.

I find it very funny that they just literally translated the names of the real-life city into the beta town name. And it almost applies to all the towns LOL I was shocked when I hears "Silent Hill", and then I noticed, yeah, 靜岡 (Shizuoka) does translate into "Silent Hill". 靜 can mean silent, and 岡 can mean hill. Totally mindblown.

1:13 I said it in a later video, but I’ll say it again. Since this covers the entirety of Japan, doesn’t that mean we kinda have early versions of what would become Hoen and Sinnoh in later generations?

Awesome video! Red being a Gym leader is very interesting, as in the Pokémon special manga published in 1997 Red has the dream of becoming a gym leader after being the champion. Possible this game concept was well know to Hidemori Kusaka and maybe more hints of this beta can be found in the manga

I've always wanted for someone to take what is known about Capsule Monsters and create a game based on that. Even if it was still called Pokémon. I think that would be so cool. And then do the same with the beta version of Gold Silv.

I'd love to see this demo game made into an alternate set of Game Boy Color games paralel to gen 2, perhaps given a chance to have gen 2 versions of later pokemon. I for one want to see Sprigatito & Salamence in the gen 2 spritework style. I'd love to explore this place using my Game Boy Color while out and about on my adventures.
@WSNO2 жыл бұрын
Personally, i'd connect the new spaces and kanto (the whole region more fleshed out than in G/S/C) through the cape north of cerulean, and because this area is definitely unique from Johto, there can be a connection via north of lake of rage. I'm sure with modern technology the original cartridge hardware can be augmented with larger storage, ram, etc to be able to play such a large and detailed game on the Game Boy Color.
@WSNO2 жыл бұрын
The best part is that since the takes on the regions of japan are so different than their hoenn and sinnoh versions is that clever map design can recycle such concepts in varying scale and specificity indefinitely if so desired.
@WSNO2 жыл бұрын
A theory i have about what some of those buildings can be used for are special gameboy camera and printer interaction, as well as peripherals i haven't even heard of yet. And in my opinion the mine cart cave seems in the vein of what mount silver is, so perhaps that's late in the new area's story and located north of the pokemon league. To make the longer time and more badges more interesting, conceivably levels of wild pokemon advance at similar rates through regions. So you start off with lv3 pidgey after new bark, pallet and "silent", but the variety of new pokemon to catch and the roughly parallel growth of trainer's teams levels in each region encourages building a new team variant in each region. I'd also love to see a more thorough rematch system implemented as that's something that always felt lacking in gen 1, 2 and 3 (emerald fixed it)....the phone mechanic being retained and used with more emphasis on items, rare pokemon sightings, and even spontaneous trades......heck, throw in the sevii islands and with the three ruins containing Unown there could be an entire subplot involving learning more about them, using the game boy printer to keep track harkening back to the mystery of exploration puzzle pc games that encouraged keeping a companion notebook to work through puzzles.
