Building off of last week's episode, when we find no joy or rest in our religion, we tend to seek it elsewhere. Christians are prone to clutter their lives will all kinds of things that might be good--but they end up keeping us from the things that will truly bring us joy. On top of this, we naturally think that we need to do things to find rest, when, in reality, we rest in order to do. Jon and Justin talk about all of this on today's episode.
Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin talk personally about leaving pietism and about the spiritual abuse that even occurs in some environments. The guys close by considering how Jesus, himself, is the gospel.

Your ministry has profoundly helped my faith get on a peaceful, more Christ centered footing. My family and I have greatly been relieved by your messages of resting in the finished work of Christ. My mother and I have noted that we literally breath easier after digesting your message, our stress has also gone down. Thank you so much for pointing us to Christ, and not on “trying harder.”

Thank you Brothers for what you do. I've been going through it for several years now. I suffer from chronic pain and it distracts me from everything. Even the things of God. It's hard to concentrate much, on the really bad days. I haven't been able to attend church for a while due to COVID and my health issues. I have such horrible doubts regarding my faith. I've never doubted God or his word, but doubt my own heart I guess. Thanks for these messages. They are very encouraging. God Bless, Joe

Omgosh!! @joe! I’ve gone through the EXACT same thing! Chronic pain, which leads to not being able to concentrate, it causes doubt in my faith & the thought that my heart has hardened, it’s everything you described! The pain causes me to not get passed my flesh due to the physical pain. It makes it SO hard to get passed the emotional parts and find the joy they are talking about!

@@donnagroat7085 I think the fact that we're concerned about our feelings towards the Lord, prove our loyalty to him. When bad things happen the first instinct is to pray and seek his face. I'll pray for you sister. I read this by Charles Spurgeon. I have known Christian women who would never have been so gentle, tender, wise, experienced, and holy if they had not been mellowed by physical pain. There are fruits in God's garden as well as in man's which never ripen till they are bruised. Young women who are apt to be volatile, conceited, or talkative, are often trained to be full of sweetness and light by sickness after sickness, by which they are taught to sit at Jesus' feet. Many have been able to say with the psalmist, "It is good for me to have been afflicted, that I might learn thy statutes." For this reason even such as are highly favoured and blessed among women may feel a sword piercing through their hearts. Oftentimes this sickness of the Lord's loved ones is for the good of others.

I would say that our meditation not only on our justification but our assured glorification in Christ is the fuel that drives sanctification

But you guys believe that the Christian life isn't purely head knowledge right? Psalm 126 for example talks about God's people being so gladdened by God's goodness that they laughed.

I struggled with all the different teachings about how one is saved and how to know if you are saved. One day I said to God, "I'm just going to believe I am saved." I know for a fact that I was born again and have been ever since. Even when I wasn't obeying God I knew the Holy Spirit was living in me!

As far as I'm concerned, if repentance is changing your mind, which is the Greek meaning, then it is an acknowledgement of the truth in your mind. Even the apostle Paul said he served the law of God with His mind and that his flesh served the law of sin.

Also, the Bible says to set your mind on things above and on spiritual things. It says to renew your mind. Feelings and emotions change with the wind. That's why we read and believe God's word and CHOOSE to put our mind on what is truth according to His Word.

It also says, "as a man thinks, so is he." Another reason we CHOOSE to put our minds on the Word of God. The way we think affects our actions and attitudes.

I don't think the mind is separate from the heart. The Bible says that the Word of God reveals the thoughts and intents of the heart. Thought involves the mind.
