You guys will never know how important this song was to a whole generation. You guys are lucky enough to grow up in a time where mental health is taken seriously. My generation did not have that luxury. We were told we were too young to have real problems, we were too young to be depressed, and that we needed to just get over it. We were not heard. This song was instrumental in saving a lot of people. This song gave words to what some of us were feeling and let us know that we were not alone. A lot of people who hear this song for the first time think its sad and depressing because its about suicide, but to my generation, it was liberating. It gave us hope. It let us know we had allies and that at least 1 person out there knew what we were going through. I love seeing you guys getting into this kind of music and realizing its not just noise and that metal and rock has depth and meaning. Keep it up!!

Metallica has a few songs that got me through my depression in my 20's. This song was one of them. About 5 years ago, I crocheted a Stevie Nicks Duster sweater. It starts out white, going into gray and eventually black. I named the sweater Fade to Black.

James Hetfield was 14 when his mother died. His father had left them, he left a note and just left. His parents didn’t believe in medicine. They were Christian scientists. His mother died of cancer, James and his sister just watched her fade away. There was no funeral. James is a pure genius imo for his writing.

This song made me cry and gave me home at the very same, the first time I heard it. This is one of a handful of songs that will get me emotionally every time. A lot of people made the mistake that this song was about suicide, but it was the depths of depression that can lead to suicide. I still remember the day I first heard this song, I was hanging out at my best friend's house after school, and he just got this album a couple of days ago. I broke down for a couple of minutes during the harmony and solo, because I felt that depression in my teen years. They say that depression is rage turned inside, and during the solo, its just constant building anger and rage and frustration.... such a wonderful song.

I've always interpreted it this way. The solo is the man dying. The ever increasing drum beat is meant to represent his dying rapid heartbeat and then it just all fades away. I rate Fade to black as one of the great musical pieces.
@evilestmonkeey Жыл бұрын
Gotta disagree. Respectfully. That last solo feels like a man standing on the ledge with his heart racing as he prepares to jump and maybe, just maybe having a moment of clarity and fade out is his heart calming as he climbs down and goes home. I’m only 25, but I like older music. Metallica composed this song decades ago, and it is a perfect description of how I felt when I hit rock bottom with alcoholism fueled by depression. Music is an absolute must in life. Makes me feel like I am not alone.

"I have lost the will to live". Sometimes it's not about wanting to die, it's the struggle of finding a reason for still being here. This feeling is harder to see in someone, don't underestimate some one that would confess this to you. He will seem fine, smiling, helpful one day...but will disapear the next with seemingly no reason...

You guys reactions are epic! I now find myself watching your reaction videos on a daily basis (especially Metallica). Back in the day, I had a cassette tape to this album and so as a result would eventually let the tape continue playing instead of stopping to rewind and replay. I think it was the last song on B side - the call of Ktulu. OK I see you already did a reaction to this song! Will watch it next.

I first heard this song in 1985 and have since revered it as the greatest song in the history of recorded music. I really enjoyed watching you guys become enlightened by it. You can't fake the looks on your faces, throughout, which tells you really took true meaning from it, as so many have over the years. Rock on!

It's amazing how sometimes you don't even need lyrics to feel the power of music. Guitar when played properly just conveys a feeling through music. And yes they are like top 5 of all time for guitar solos.

Those lyrics 'I was me but now he's gone' thats the line that always got me and I connected with when I was younger. When I struggle with depression I am not me. I am not the person I was meant to be. Metallica were more than just metal aye! They were something you could FEEL.

Out of the 13 men I fought alongside in Fallujah back in 2004, we lost 4 in the fighting. Since then 6 of the men who made it have taken their own lives and us remaining three can't help but wonder if there wasn't something more that we could have done. Mental health is not a joke. Take care of each other, if you ever have any reason to think that one of you is struggling do not hesitate to help pick them up or you may regret it for the rest of your lives.

This song changed my life as a young teenager. After all this time, it is still my favorite song of all time and it means so much to me. To sit here 30 years later and watch you guys just vibe out and dig it, and really understand the power of the lyrics, music, instrumentation, and grit of this track truly brought goosebumps and warmth to me. I love to see people *feel* music, as you did here. Kudos, and may your musical discovery continue with good health and powerful energy. Amazing video, subscribed, and can't wait to see more!

The songs that they write are actually poetry they're not only musicians they're poets and they're writing their emotions out so that other people can relate and realize that there is hope he's talking about his feelings but they're not going through with that it's about depression

My brother in law took his own life after battling schizophrenia for 20years literally a week ago. This song takes an entirely new meaning if you've had someone you love kill themselves. I sit here typing this with tears streaming down my cheeks thinking of the pain and emptiness he felt. When he would get into a manic state he would disappear and another person would be there in front of your eyes. The line "I was me, but now he's gone" hits so hard for me right now. I know this song means different things to different people, but the attitude of the dude in the Sox hat is coming across as disrespectful to those who lost their battles, to be taking it so lightly. I pray he doesn't have this happen to someone in his life so he can continue to happily enjoy this masterpiece. Someday I will too, but that day is not today as I sit heavy in my emotions for my brother in law.

This song, along with Metallica in general, saved my life. It was Metallica that inspired me to learn how to play guitar when I was 12. Learning and playing was something I could dedicate time to and not be out getting into shit. Mostly though, it was a massive emotional outlet. If I had a bad day, I’d come home and just rip out Metallica for a few hours. By the end, I’d feel better. Later on, when I was in the later parts of High School, on really bad days I would come home, put on Kill em All and play along all the way through 4 albums, until the end of And Justice for All. It would be a 4+ hour marathon of playing every song off all of their first four albums (which were all that were out at the time). I can’t stress just how much having that outlet helped me. I can confidently say that I would have taken my own life in my teen years if I didn’t have guitar and Metallica in my life. I finally got to meet them in 2009. I was at one of the lowest points in my life, having become disabled due to an accident the year before. That would ultimately cost me my career and my ability to walk any sort of distance. It also cost me the luxury of a physically pain free existence. I won the drawing for a meet and greet and had amazing seats to the show as well. My then 70 year old father came with me, it was his first music concert he’d ever been to. He enjoyed it, and remarked on just how much energy the band put out and the fans sent back to the band. I finally got to tell James, Kirk and Lars just how much the band meant to me and that they were responsible for saving my life. It’s a day I’ll never forget, and it’s even more special now, because my father has since passed away.

Just want to add to all the comments about how this song helped them through a dark time because it made them feel they weren't alone, and I very much relate to that...but they did something more than that. Even though there's no "happy ending" with the lyrics, the song itself is a triumph, because they channeled that pain into creating something beautiful and and powerful! And THAT is what helped them, and all of us who love this song, live to face, fight, embrace another day.
