They started talkin' about just drove up from Ottumwa from a comedy gig and headin' for Des Moines. The one guy just started sayin stuff off the cuff, and the bar owner and I were just laughin' our butts off. He was so funny. Much later, I learned that it was Ron White. I'm late, but maybe someone will appreciate this story. My great-uncle Hunter owned nothing but VW Beetles because they were durable and easy to repair. One evening, he was driving on a two lane and hit a deer with his VW. Killed it too. First thing he did was tie the carcass to the roof. Next thing he did was drive the mangled car home. Engine's in the back, so it was unharmed. Still, a Beetle isn't designed to hit deer, and the front of this car was a mess. My uncle attached the back of the car to a tree, then used a come-along (a heavy ratchet strap) and straightened the car out enough that he could adjust the suspension to make it mostly drivable. He then used a hammer to bang out the fenders and the hood, filling in the gaps with Bondo and spray-painting it all white, though the rattle can was a different white than the car. He drove that car another 20+ years until he died. That is farmer ingenuity at it's finest.

Yep, he's from my neck of the woods, actually 15 mins from where I live. There ain't nothing to do here but watch the grass grow. His stories and delivery is what makes me a hilarious comedian. The dear story reminded me of decades ago I was working temporarily (Elk season) at a restaurant and last chance gas station as a dishwasher and gas attendant on "White Pass" (highway 410), Washington state. On my way there one early morning, driving a 1964 Corvair convertible, I nearly hit a large Elk. All day, when pumping gas I was asked if any Elk had been spotted and I'd say no, except for the one I nearly collided with... hours ago (I hope it survived the season).
