Derrick had a complete 180 in American History X where as Danny in this movie seemed to flip flop too much and by the time he was about to do a 180 he just blew himself up. 🤷🏽♂️
@eatdabutt3 ай бұрын
That wasn't how the original was written. The original had Derek Vineyard pulling up on the gang members that killed Danny and wasting them all. Cycle continues. Edward Norton felt like it gave the white supremacist credibility so he helped rewrite it the way it is.
@cam58162 ай бұрын
🥹 He’s just like me
@stairwaytoheaven82 ай бұрын
His flip flog and struggle between two identities that lasts til the end is what makes him such a complex character. Compare that to Derek's instant change we see, we knew from the start that he's reformed and has a new outlook on life, whereas you're more captivated by Danny's struggle and suffering with his morality and redemption. That is what his sacrifice in the end symbolizes, From my perspective I think he realized he was just to deep in sin and evil so he decided to sacrifice himself to save others.
@vaclevstaАй бұрын
Yes, because they're completely different characters. Derek was a self-confident alpha male type who was recruited into a White Supremacist gang by a master manipulator in the wake of his father's death and rising racial tensions in LA in the 90's. Danny was a schizoid loner who resented his religious upbringing so much that he found a fringe fascist movement on the internet because he was desperate to impress everyone with his deranged rants about the evils of Judaism.

I really do think you nailed the comparison between Derick from American History X and Ryan Gosling's potrayal as Dan . Derrick actually makes you uncomfortable not just with his hatred but with the more uncomfortable fact that you could maybe understand what he means and their lies the tragedy of his character because we also see the damage it does to his loved ones. Dan's actions are potrayed In too much of a sympathetic light it makes him seem stupid and the people he's affiliating with potrayed to not be as dangerous as they actually are.

They originated out of Belgium, during the late stages of World War II the Waffen SS, opened its ranks to ethnic Germans and non-Germans. They even had a Spanish division, African division and there was even a Muslim division. Power in numbers was the game. But yeah that’s what his tattoo is, why he has that particular one, Is a mystery he probably just liked the swastika shape with a kind of futuristic look to it.
