Holy crap, at 00:58 those early dos 3ds max (Or I guess just "3d studio" back then) screenshots bring back memories

Awesome! I had the original game when it first came out (as I recall, I played it on a 486 DX-33), but I don't remember a VHS tape being included, and had never seen it before. Thanks for doing this!

This game was awesome. Campy, thought provoking, pioneering. Some images and music are still engrained in my head. Thanx for this.

Holy smokes! I grew up about 15 minutes from Jacksonville. I guess I was a little young to have heard about this at the time. 😂

Oh man, I haven’t watched this in… probably close to 30 years. I lost the VHS tape long ago. Got to see Landeros and Devine give a talk at the local science museum a few months after the game’s release, and my friend and I were the only people in the audience who raised our hands when Rob asked the audience who had completed the game.

Thanks for doing this. It's so amazing they were on the cutting edge of digital media and trying to figure out how to make it all work. I would be sweating bullets, but so excited to be involved. Are they still in the industry? I know 7guest VR is coming soon!

Graeme Devine has had a long fruitful life as a game developer. Rob Landeros runs his own graphic design business. 7th Guest VR is redone from the ground up with new actors, but it is very faithful to the original.

Thank you for doing this. I haven't seen this video in two decades. The 7th Guest is still my favorite video game.

I loved this game back when I played it. I think I remember watching the VHS - I don't recall if I actually had the version of the game that came with it but it's entirely possible I came into possession of the tape either through my brother, who worked at a software retailer back then, or eventually when I worked at a software retailer that had some that were going to be tossed. It's great to see it preserved!

The 7th Guest truly is a historical game with a legendary legacy. Not just in storytelling and full motion video but also data compression technogy and popularizing cd Rom tech. It's possible to take any modern game today and trace some part of it back to 7th guest and before.

My all time favorite game if I had to pick one. Best soundtrack ever. The bonus audio tracks on the 2nd cd were awesome as well.

I remember babysitting for my sister and staying up all night playing this along with Phantasmagoria. Took me forever to figure out the puzzles, lol. Scary stuff back then! Will always be my fav pc game

Wow, I missed this one and it slipped under my radar somehow! I remember back in the day I was captivated by a DOS CDROM FMV game named "The Lawnmower Man", and it wasn't until years later I revisited it to see how it was put together and what I could learn from the game files. Thank you for posting this!

Thanks for this. Never played the game, but it must've been mindblowing for the developers to suddently get a medium that can fit the data of 400 or so floppies!

imagine waiting 40 minutes just to see a single render of a 3d prop. We are so spoiled today

My box said it included the tape, but it wasn't there. Found a full box with the tape at a flea market many years later. There's enough room to have included it on the second disc. I made a CDR copy with Cinepak and XVID versions of the tape on the second disc just for the hell of it. Also made a single disc copy of the game including some updates, I just had to exclude the closing credits CD audio track and replace it with an mp3 copy you have to play yourself. They could have made it a single disc game with little changes, although don't know if CDs were increased to 700mb at that point.

They typically were not, they were still 650MB at that time. The data files are 660MB, so imagine how frustrating that must have been :-) They put redbook audio tracks on one (both?) discs to not have the extra space wasted so much.

Great little docu and restoration! It is worth uploading the raw VHS capture as a comparison to what is possible with digital restoration techniques?
@TheOldskoolPC
@TheOldskoolPC Жыл бұрын
Not really, as the raw capture is all over the web. If I had more than 10mbps upload speeds, I'd upload mine to archive.org, but it's 30G.

I feel like if the video referenced the VR version in the title or had vr in the tags then it could have brought a certain new audience to the video. Maybe still can, honestly.

Honestly, I wasn't aware of the VR version until recently -- but that's a really great idea. I'll change the title.
