I used to spend so much time playing DVD games as a kid. My favorites were the Barbie Rapunzel dress up game and art history lesson game, Lilo and Stitch's alien creation game, and the Disney Sing Along Songs games. There was some special feeling to seeing the clips from the movie as cutscenes as well.

I remember watching commercials for the Shrek 2 DVD SPECIFICALLY advertising the Far Far Away Idol segment as a feature and wanting to see it so bad. Time passed and I got the Shrek 2 DVD for my birthday later that year. I remember being so excited to watch this extra feature and see who was the winner, and being absolutely LIVID that each ending resulted in Simon being declared the winner no matter who you chose. I felt so betrayed lol

As soon as I encountered this video, I had to quickly click in and let the nostalgia roll in. I remember the days when my mom would buy me a dvd from any movie that has been released after the movie premiere or "early access" from cheap DVD vendors. Now this would be a 75/25 for me because most of the DVDs are literally the films but they were illegaly recorded from a video camera inside a theater and they literally have Foreign Titles or Subtitles, while some DVDs are the real deal that carry the Main-Menu + Special Features. I have a WHOLE list of DVDs that have the Main Menu Features such as: -Disney's Robin Hood -The AristoCats -Meet the Robinsons -Cars Toons -Handy Manny -Home of the Range -The Scooby Doo Christmas Movie (I forgot the title but it included some What's new Scooby Doo episodes) -My Friends Tigger & Pooh -Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Halloween -Tom & Jerry: The Magic Ring -Garfield Gets Real -Good Boy Man... I miss those days when I had a bunch of DVDs with the menu screen and just watch em any time

We called them set-top games back in the day, because they were being played in the dvd player itself, which most people kept on top of their tv set. Two of the best that I remember (and keep in mind they're about as functional as cd-rom point and click adventures) were on the Who Framed Roger Rabbit disc, which had a ful tour of the movie world hosted with new narration by Benny the Cab, and a game consisting of a few different minigames somewhat replicating the movie plot. The other was a well made Superman vs Doomsday game on the disc for the animated film Superman: Doomsday, a rough first attempt at adapting Death of Superman in the Timmverse days, before the properly titled two part films Death and Reign. That was a fighting game composed of clips from the movie's fight scenes, attacks and responses played after clicks based on timing and reflexes, and it was the closest I ever saw a dvd set top game get to what feels like a real video game. They're as much a novelty as VHS board games now, but could stand some more attention. Too bad they realized that all that extra work made a better product, but didn't really help sales much.

It's not perfect, but it's a great "in" without breaking the bank, and sounds better than some of the 200+ mics to shame in quality. That last part about you playing the Shrek 2 game instead of watching the movie reminds me of how I owned (still do) the Disney Sing-A-Long Songs DVDs and for the "I'm on My Way" edition, I would watch it not to sing along, but to watch the scenes from the movies without having to watch the entire films.

This video was amazing, I really miss the DVD formats presentation. This video also brought back a memory of a DVD game that scared me. I remember being horrified by an Over the Hedge DVD Game where you played as the Squirrel trying to stealth through lasers or something? It was pretty typical for DVD games but the game over screen scared me. It was a scene from the movie of him in a cage, but where normally there was another character to hold his hand he was just alone. It disturbed the hell out of me cause he still looked down where the skunk girl was normally. I may be misremembering it though.

Now that I think about it, You Don't Know Jack would have been the perfect thing to adapt into a DVD game. Think about it. A small selection of episodes on a disc, complete with Cookie's usual witty commentary. It most likely wouldn't be able to keep track of your score, due to limitations of DVD coding, but I could imagine that it would give you a time/score conversion chart to help you keep track yourself.

There was a point and click tour of Honeydukes where you could go around the candy shop and a running game where you played as Ron's rat dodging obstacles to escape Hermione's cat. I remember really enjoying the extras on the Ducktales Movie dvd back in the day. Looking back at it it wasn't anything too special, it was like a point and click treasure hunt, yet as a kid it felt really cool to explore McDuck Manor like that. Another one I remember really enjoying was "It's your birthday party with Winnie the Pooh". Now this dvd was heavily focused on the interactive part, it was like the main feature of the dvd, it had like 8 different games to play. The one I remember most fondly was the personality quiz. Another interesting thing that came out on dvd were some of the Humongous Entertainment games. Which was very interesting, an entire game basically on your dvd. Sure it didn’t run as smoothly as the pc versions, but still, it was pretty impressive for a child. Personally I owned Pyjama Sam 3. Only downside really was that they removed the multiple randomised paths, so every playthrough was the same.

Fun Fact: As a child. I absolutely loved the extras on Shrek 2 and Madagascar but i actually developed a fear that when i woke up in the middle of the night, the eerie silence along with a character or someone in the menus staring into my soul would absolutely scare the shit outta me. After that, i couldn't be in a room by myself when these menus would play. I would either hit the eject dvd button out of unbearable fear or i would try to start the movie as quick as possible. Its just something about the looping silence or something like a character starring directly at me. Now that im 23, i thought about it for sometime and realized that i had severe anxiety when it came to being in a room completely silent by myself. I had nobody to reassure me that i was safe so it developed into anxiety.

But anyways, this was very well written and edited, and I hope you'll consider making more videos like this! DVD games are nostalgic to me (and a lot of other people, I'm sure), and deep-dives like this are surprisingly scarce for the niche, at least from what I've seen. "completely randomized" -- does the DVD interactive menu format have a random number generator? Nobody knows, because the spec is a trade secret, patented, copyrighted, trademarked, encrypted, obfuscated and most likely booby trapped to make sure nobody makes interactive DVD menus. You can reverse engineer it, sure, but there's no guarantee which discs with will work which players without the actual spec.
