It's a great idea but in the USA at least, the cost to move in a caboose is way more than most people expect. The caboose itself isn't that bad (hard to find these days but some are still out there) but the rest of the logistics of track, transport to the site, placement with a crane, etc. add up quickly. If I was a lottery winner, I would not hesitate but for an average working family? uhhhh...maybe other projects are places the money could be better spent.

What I would do is dig out the track bed get hold of some old sleepers and rails then id buy a couple of old carriages so you'd walk straight off the platform into the carriages either use them as summerhouse or clamping pods the latter you'd make quite abit of money for restoration of the station house.

Standard EPDM pond liner is probably your best bet. But one piece of advice since this is basically a long skinny rectangle shape: Make one of the "ends" of that rectangle a slope instead of a vertical wall. All ponds eventually need maintenance and cleaning and having a slope you can roll a wheelbarrow up and down--or even drive a small tractor if the work is major--will make life a lot easier when that maintenance time comes around. If the pond is clean enough for grandkids to wade in on hot days, that sloped end also lets the little ones enter/exit and go only as deep as they are comfortable.
@Goldenoldie495 ай бұрын
A slope would also be safer for wildlife such as hedgehogs to get out.

Last Thursday, I was up in the San Gabriel Mountains in the Angeles National Forest. I was at the site of the Alpine Tavern which was in operation from the mid 1890's until 1936. The only way guests could stay at this Southern California resort was by an electric trolley. It was called the Mt Lowe Railroad. Anyway I was clearing off debris and I cleaned off about 20 feet of the old platform. All the while I was doing this, I was thinking of the two of you and chuckling to myself.

Canadian here , I am in agreement with the Auzzie, I would get in a small skid-steer or small track-backhoe clean it down to the road bed and (if possible replace the tracks add an old passenger car and/or baggage car with the railroad logo on them) You could turn it into a neat bed and breakfast guest cottage decked out like an old English travelling car , first class carriage or composite coach with sleepers , with probably 2 units per car. I am sure people would really like that idea to spend a night or two .Just a thought... The pond idea is a good one as well ,but it may turn out to major maintenance issue to keep it clean, the brush kept down and the water from turning swampy.

@@theoldstationrenovation If you ever do let me know, I will (accompanied by tools ) fly across the pond and help with the restoration/ rebuild of the cars just for the shear fun and challenge of doing so. Another thought occurred today , there are many railroad societies in Canada that volunteer time and money to just such projects to preserve old stations that people own and rail equipment. I am sure in England there are lots of railfans and retired railroaders that might be able assist with such a project.or know where to start. In some instances the rail companies will donate track and even decommissioned cars (to advertise their line) ..again just an idea... By the way the work you are putting in is amazing and the station will look like something out of a picture book when finished.

It's nice to see the cast iron plate is still on the bridge that used to have the bridge number in black and white is still there, you've gotta restore that! As for the pond I'd have it up beside the decking area but not full length right down to the bridge. If you build another partition you could either linecit with a rubber liner or line it with clay. Then have the rest of the track bed as a sunken garden.

What I would suggest is similar to many others. The difference is, that I would start by laying track adjacent to the main platform and settling for that at this time. Then, at some later date, look for a really old carriage that may even need a new chassis and restore it as a Barry Railway carriage. Colour scheme can be found on the railway pages of the computer under South Wales Carriage liveries or similar. When you had your track in and carriage placed, you could do with it whatever you liked. Regards, Paul.

I notice what looks like a section of rail still in place under the bridge starting at about 2:16. As a train enthusiast, I love that. My experience with ponds is that they're far more trouble than they're worth. A pond is a never-ending maintenance headache. Between bugs, algae, weeds and whatever, I'm firmly in the drain-it-and-keep-it-dry camp. I love the idea of installing a section of track in hopes of eventually bringing in a sleeper, coach, or diner. Here in the US, some folks bring in a caboose (in the US, they were the last car of each freight train for decades). I really enjoy seeing your property gradually come back to life. My own vision is of restored platforms offering a panorama of the beautiful landscape -- leading to the magnificent bridge. The station and bridge really bookend your property, anchoring each end visually and physically.

Get a Bobcat and start digging out the trackbed to both platforms and then make your decision when you've gone as far as you could after clearing all vegetation. For a pond you could find large plastic or fiberglass unit(s) that would drop onto the railbed and have water circulating in them. There was so much vegetation on the station side of the railbed I couldn't see that tons of fill had been added years earlier to make an embankment. Question now is do you keep it as is or dig it out to restore the right of way. You can dig out the embankment earth and move it somewhere else on the property. I can see a problem on the opposite side platform where the retaining wall ends towards the bridge and earth and turf have gone downhill into the railbed. That definitely will be a recurring digging job.

Wow! It’s been difficult to imagine the footprint of the property until you started clearing the gardens(despite your stellar efforts ❤). I’m understanding the layout of the property now, and it’s so exciting to see Gil uncovering the old platforms. Here is my tuppence-worth. As an avid gardener and discoverer of mysteries in my own (formerly) overgrown garden, I’d want to see what’s under the mud. If the pond was built properly there should be a proper surface and possibly drainage under the mud. If that’s the case you may be able to create a safe, dry area until you decide what you are doing with the space. By the time you lay a suitable surface over the mud that is dready for a pond liner you’ll lose a lot of depth. If the water is too shallow it will affect water quality. It’s probably the least expensive way to restore the area to a safe and enjoyable space, that looks like someone has tended it. Hopefully you can get a digger in there. Good luck ❤

So much work done, so much still to do. Gil has impressive stamina - and plenty of power tools! If you are going to uncover the far platform and the bank behind it (subject to safety) one option which might work and would be very in keeping with the Victorian era of the station would be to make the bank into a heather garden. As for the track bed, it needs dug out, that is a massive job by hand and a simple job with a mini digger! Personally I am not in favour of the pond, I really like the idea of many posters who suggest buying a railway carriage to put there on some new track

Winston needs a ball in some other color besides green😂😂. My lab, Bandit, has a blue and a yellow football very similar to Winston's green ball. Once you get all that greenery, vines, and brambles out, perhaps the water will be able to drain faster and more complete and you won't have a muddy swampy area anymore.🙏🏻🙏🏻 If you want a pond there, you might think about that heavy plastic that's so many put down or cement. Then you'll need to keep goldfish in there to keep the algae away. That's what the county uses here to keep algae out of the canal that runs a little ways behind our house. Also use them in the large water barrels for the horses. Helps keep mosquitoes away too. Renting or buying some bigger equipment to tackle your giant outdoor messes would be helpful, safer and quicker. Something like those big standing or sitting lawnmowers. You'll need it not just for clearing the land now but for maintenance to keep it up. It's so nice to see you wearing safety goggles. Most gardeners I see on KZbin don't use them. You made a great start in that area. A job well done!👏🏻👏🏻 I'll bet your muscles are sore and you're tuckered out from all that work. Have a restful evening and a good dinner. I'm sure you sleep well tonight❤ The doggies too!

A thought about that "sludge" (there's another word for it in American English -- not mud -- but I'm too lazy at the moment to look it up): that is very rich in nutrients. This richness of nutrients is why swamplands are so full of wildlife & plants. If you decide to dig out that sludge, have a place in one of your gardens to spread it out, & work it into the soil. Your plants will benefit greatly at no additional cost to you.

I suggest digging out the track bed to the original depth between the platforms, and down at the stone bridge build up a spillway dam for excess water at a certain level (as high as you want the highest water level you'd like the pond to be). I'm new to your voyage of discovery and binge watching all episodes. Going back on the secret garden episode, the tower/lookout could that of been the old water tower for tender filling?

Thanks for watching, there is a water tank somewhere, we saw it in an old photo 😀

It is good that this dried out enough so you can really see what was going on in there. Hmmm you could do a lot of different things with this space! You could fill it in and make it a flower garden if that is your kind of thing. You could probably put crops/vegetable garden in it too. You could always make part of it a constructed pond (with a liner or plastic pond container, not sure what they are called) and keep the other half to do what you want with it. You could use part of it as a drainage area for your gutters and lot. It's clear this area retains some water from the area because of the muck that was still in there. Since it rains a lot in the UK, it might end up being a wetland area, so you could plant pollinators and other hydric plants if that is your thing.

Get a mini digger or JCB to clean it out and turn it into a sunken garden with a small pond, and put some old railway track 🛤️ at the top end by the decking you were putting in for your shed/cabin and see if you can find an old small railway carriage, Good luck 🤞 you have a lot of work to do 😁👍

Have you thought about putting a front drain in the track area and a sump pump to pump out the water? Another thought is to put an aerator in there when there is water because it prevents the algae from growing.

If you are going to put in a pond then put in a water feature like a waterfall to keep the water moving so you don't get eaten by mosquitoes, also mosquitoes can give your dogs heartworms and other diseases, by having moving water the insects can't lay eggs, that will keep you and your family safe, and you can use the same water in a with a small pump and save money too...🥰🥰😃😃😃

I would dig it out and get a big liner in it would look awesome

Regarding a pond, they are typically lined with either compacted clay soil or a polymer sheet liner.

Polymer sheet would probably be easier there 👍

@@theoldstationrenovation Can the water from the roof be sent to the pond?

nice work, looked like it was hard going tbh, I'm sitting here procrastinating about fixing my shed door while you cut down half a forest lol i feel pretty bad right now.

Wow that's a lot of plant life to clear. I must admit I was scared how far you guys could possibly sink and worried about the dogs too. Is it solid ground under the sludge? That's not mud on Buddie - he put socks on! Winston is nuts for that ball, I mean NUTS haha. Great video, looking forward to seeing area entirely cleared as quite curious to see what it will look like.

Thank you! The sludge seems to be sitting on the trackbed rather than being the trackbed. I’ll get in there with a shovel in the next week or two and clear a bit out to see what it’s like underneath. And yeah, Winston loves his ball! He may be four but he still has puppy enthusiasm 🐶 😊
