All the couples I've seen on TV say the real test of a couple's commitment to each other is to do a renovation together. If you're together after a renovation, your marriage is solid. There might be some truth to that. It's certainly a worthy test of patience and understanding.

You may want to consider putting wire mesh all along the base to keep your dogs and critters from digging underneath. You can put it on the inside before any work is done for the subflooring. Bury the mesh so many inches into the ground. It will be hidden.

Good call on ditching the green plastic deck supports. They would have been a huge pain to replace later. I see other viewers have already mentioned the wire mesh to protect the area underneath from critters (I used 'hardware cloth' wire mesh on a roll for the bottom of my garden beds; no gophers after 15 years!), and weed cloth underlayment to keep weeds and vines from growing up between the deck boards. Those stumps, unless they are totally gone, my sprout. I'd suggest drilling large holes through them, from the sides too, and using stump killer. Your dogs are so funny...I can see the wheels in Gil's head going, thinking of measurements, the next step in the process, etc. Dogs, "Ball!!"

Hi😊 before you put your decking down you may want to consider filling up between the joists with peagravell as this can not be tunneled through by squirrels and rats and will stop them nesting under your decking. . I haven't heard you mention having rat's about but I would be very surprised if you haven't got them 🤔

9:40 Makes me laugh seeing the cement bags, back around 1987 when the RAF were flying their fairly new Tornados, they didn’t have an operational airborne radar system in time for the aircraft’s launch. So to compensate for the mass of the radar system they put a block of cement into the nose cone to keep the balance. It was described as the Tornado fitted with “Blue Circle” radar system. 😂😂

I generally hate to play back seat driver--but on future projects, I would highly recommend that you pre-mix the concrete in a wheel barrow (easy to do) rather than dry pour. Dry pouring makes for really (!!) weak and bad quality concrete, even for something as simple as fence posts. It is bad enough that if a contractor tried it on any of my work, I'd kick them off the job so fast it'd leave a skid mark. Trying to be polite but it is really that bad a practice. (let the flames begin...)
@E3ECO
@E3ECO 15 күн бұрын
My fencing contractor prefers to do a dry pour to ensure a tight fit between post and concrete. He says he routinely has to fix posts people put in with a wet pour because the post can move a little as it's drying and create gaps. The concrete shrinks, which also creates gaps.
@OldGeezerstoolbox
@OldGeezerstoolbox 13 күн бұрын

Beautiful potential in the property. I know you've been researching and found old pictures of the site. I believe there is actual footage in a "Midsomer Murders" episode! If it's not your train station it is one identical to it. The episode was Season 9, Episode 4, "Down Among the Dead Men," around the 45 minute mark, plus or minus. It shows the railroad bridge, the actors looking over the bridge at what looks like your railway station. This episode is on KZbin and the channel is also titled Midsomer Murders. If I hadn't seen a previous video of yours showing pictures from days past of your station, I wouldn't even mention it but, to me, it looks exactly like yours!

Lo again, lots of heavy work there. I have done a few decks in my time. What you are about to do is gonna be difficult. I noticed the posts weren't dipped in creosol to prevent them from decaying in soil. I am assuming that is cement you put in after setting the posts. Did it have creosol in the mixture? I have noticed in various videos that Europeans don't premix the cement before putting it in the holes. I was wondering why. I'm from California, USA. I so enjoy your videos and can't wait for the next ones. I'm sure that Winston and Buddy would've helped you with the post hole digging. 😅 Gil would benefit from a back brace while he's working. I see he uses good body mechanics.👏🏻 Who is the cabin for? You brought in an RV/Caravan to live in while you're renovating the train station for your family to live in afterwards. Did you hide the dog balls today?😂 Gil is doing a great job. Such a knowledgeable man. 👏🏻💪🏻

Thank you, I’m glad I look knowledgeable but I’m really just learning as I go. The posts have been treated and I’ve used preserver on the cut ends. Hi, I am a bit sceptical about the way to put the wooden pillars in the ground with the surrounding quick hardening concrete. I fear that the wood will rot away in some years. Don't you have impact sleeves (if Google translated it correctly from 'Einschlaghülse') ? Using these prevents the wooden pillars from getting wet all the time. Additionally cement and water combined are really bad for wood. People reconstructing half-timbered house use lime instead of cement when mortar will come into contact with the timber. Sorry for being a smartass! I love your channel and all you are doing.

This episode provokes a totally positive suggestion from me -- perhaps you might announce a project like this ahead of time and ask for constructive suggestions and references. That way the "why didn't you ..." comments might come in time for you to consider them. I chuckled as I watched this, because your experience was pretty much exactly like mine when I rebuilt the very large porch of my 1890's Victorian in 1980. The project took me an entire summer, and I did it pretty much like your deck. I dug holes, set posts, laboriously measured and leveled carrying beams (and leveled them again and again), used lag screws to fasten everything, and finally finished the project by the end of the summer. I'm very happy to say that today, nearly fifty years later, that porch is still level, true and solid. About two weeks after I finished, I watched a competent contractor do a very similar porch on a neighboring Victorian in our neighborhood. I just had to laugh about all all the things that contractor did differently. That porch was finished in about a week and is also still level, true and solid nearly fifty years later. The main difference was obvious once I watched him doing it. 1. The contractor dug ALL the post holes at the same time. He used a power auger rather than that tedious and mostly useless (other than muscle training) post hole digger. 2. The contractor used cribbing under each member to align the beams square and level. He fastened the beams to the posts while each post floated in its empty hole, suspended from the beams that were supported by the cribbing. Adjusting the frame was easily accomplished with shims and a hammer. 3. When the entire frame -- beams, posts, post hangers, et al -- was square, level, and true, the contractor poured cement into each post hole up to the desired level. Each hole took only a few minutes to fill. 4. A few days later, after the cement was dry and cured enough, the contractor knocked out the cribbing and finished the rest of the project. A few other tips: 1. As others have noted, notching the posts where each beam joins provides a wood-to-wood bearing surface. This is much more stable than relying on the bolts and hangers. 2. Drilling a hole all the way through the post allows lag bolts to pass entirely through the post. Each bolt is then fastened on the inside with a big washer and nut. This is a much more long-lasting connection in comparison to a lag screw that relies on screw threads biting into wood. 3. Use pressure-treated lumber for all the posts and -- if you can afford it -- for the beams. That significantly increases the lifetime of these structural members 4. As much as I love the new toys like the laser level, an old fashioned water level is often far more convenient. All you need is fifty or a hundred feet of translucent plastic tubing, a tub to hold a few gallons of water, and food coloring to make the levels easy to see. Then siphon the colored water into the tube and plug each end. Hold the two ends next to each other and use a marker to draw a level line across each. In use, one of you holds one end of the tube upright at one end. The other walks the other end to wherever its needed and moves it up or down until the red water line matches the level-lines. Bingo -- the two ends are level with each other. There are enough times when there isn't a clear line-of-sight that a water level can be a lot easier. Plus, it goes around corners without any trouble at all. Your new deck will be fabulous. Congratulations on selling your other house, that will surely take some of the pressure off all these projects. I look forward to new episodes as you continue restoring this amazing property.

Where did the chickens go? I thought that area was the chicken pen. Looks like you're off to a good start. What's going on inside the station now? Still getting permits and design work done? 😊

They are on the outbuilding side of the garden. Once the decking is up we’ll move them to the bridge garden with a lot more space to scratch around 🐓

I don't understand, what is the purpose of a cabin? You live in the mobile home, and the goal is station renovation...Have you said the purpose of a cabin?

Fun? Don’t over think it. People buy a property and do it up as they want to and make films along the way. It’s as simple as that. “Purpose” is meaningless in the context you seem to be using it.

@@allanfstone I'm not, but I think she forgot to say what it was for. Whether they are going to move into that, or will it be a guest house, or will it be a chicken house? Just trying to figure out the direction it's going in.

Strangely, the dog(s) show ABSOLUTELY no interest at all in your construction project. Only the soggy old ball is of any interest - it must be so annoying for them that you are not paying attention.
